An undefeated national champion is a toss up with a person who has never competed in this sport.

Ok.

Oh Christ... would you stop. Can we please not pretend that he's going from Basketball to Wrestling?

He's competed in Wrestling. He won a World Championship. He was arguably the best in the world on his feet.

I don't think that's a CRAZY take to say Forrest and Ono are a tossup.

I DO think it's crazy to dumb it down to "he's never competed in this sport," as if we're talking about Gable Stevenson becoming an All-Pro at DT in the NFL.

This thread title is saying Rocco Welsh the only reason PSU wins a natty in 2027 when in reality it won’t be close, yet again. With or without Welsh.

Well the OP’s scenario was Welsh goes to OK State.  What was the point difference between Welsh and Ryder?  Over 10 right?  That’s a 20-point swing.  Still not really close and I know OK State did really well but they could have done better (Lockett in particular).

That's SO many variables, I think it could be close next year. I think Ross could win it. I think you could and SHOULD get so much more out of Lockett(maybe at '74). Routledge at '65? Raney. Those 4 added to this program with Vega going up?

And now Welsh is the '84 at Okie State(hypothetically). Yeah, I think it'd be entirely possible.

Spratley vs Lillendahl, Jax vs Ono, Vega vs SVN, Robideau vs whoever PSU has at '57, Ross vs Mirasola.

All potential matchups that would not be HUGE upsets. I don't think there's actually one in there that'd be too big of one.

He’s what almost 23 years old.  The 5 for 5 rule is coming.  What is he competing with?  Bo basset for the oldest senior in the history of the sport?  Can’t get off bottom or win a wrestle off this year … or compete in an open tournament unattached….

but sure.  He’s a toss up with an actual ncaa champ in a sport he has yet to take the mat.

If Sadulaev showed up at Iowa in the fall, would you concede he has no chance against Barr?

Yes barr would be a favorite in folkstyle

but sadulaev is older than bo bassets dad… and likely cannot make 197.  Isn’t he almost 30?

He’s had a year in the best wrestling room in the country to learn how to get off bottom well enough…the disciplines aren’t as dramatic as you’re making it out to be. He beat Spencer Lee…good enough for me to think the room can help him adjust to the stylistic differences

People up to college spend their whole entire life trying to get off bottom and struggle in college.  I’m sure a he is world class on bottom after a hot minute.

if you take off the blue glasses you will see what reality looks like.

Plus Ono is old af.   He’s probably going to get injured at his advanced age.

Braeden Davis couldn’t get off bottom of the police after practicing in that room for several years

With 3 sumo step outs vs 2 caution points.   Don’t think that translates at all to folkstyle.

Well allegedly Blaze had the flu at NCAA’s.  And more importantly, they didn’t wrestle each other this year so I definitely wouldn’t assume Jax wins since matchups make matches.  Jax however would be the favorite based on being the champ this year.

I agree Jax is the favorite in a college match based on him being champ.

Umm I don’t have blue glasses…more Scarlet and Gray. Most college guys don’t have his natural talent and you’re acting like he has absolutely no ability on bottom. May not be great but workable with the elite characteristics I’m sure.

Pretty sure Davis never actually belonged in that room…probably trying to fight everyone in there working him over every day.

Most college freshmen struggle getting off the bottom, because they were rarely on bottom in high school. It’s what happens when you go two, three, four years without giving up an offensive point in high school. By January of freshmen year, you are either figuring it out or contemplating seppuku after every long live go with an upperclassman.

I have no dog in this fight, but you’re acting like switching from freestyle to folkstyle is like switching from baseball to soccer. It’s more like switching from running 10k on a road course to 10k on a cross country course. If a world champion 10k’er shows up on the cross country course, you’re not going to bet your paycheck against him.

I’d call it a “toss-up, leans Jax”. Semantics, I know... It would be just as impressive of a win for either of the two, and it wouldn’t be an upset win for either of the two. Those two things can’t be true if there is a favorite.

It would be an upset if Blaze won.  I guarantee betting sites would say so if they wrestled NCAAs again today.

This isn't complicated.  The guy who was undefeated and won NCAAs is the favorite over the guy who was 4th.

And ono’s never been on bottom in the context of Folkstyle.  Never not once.  Those 5/10/15 second goes where your literally stalling makes him far worse skill wise than good azz high school kids from that position.

bo basset is as old as Kyle dake is defying genetics and getting younger by the day.

ono will be 23 during his “junior” year at psu.   He’s almost as old as yoda when he gave up and died in rotj

There is zero chance Blaze had actual influenza. He had a cold. To be clear not annoyed at you, but my biggest pet peeve is people thinking a cold is the flu, which, if you truly have you are not getting off the couch, much less on the mat at NCAAs

Barr wouldn't make it to the second period with Sadulaev in any style

Disagree - your profile picture gives it away.  You are clearly a blue glasses guy.  There is zero gray in your picture and at least half of it is blue. Case closed

I am a gigantic Penn State homer, but unless Barr rolled Sadulaev through or slipped out of a gut and pinned him, he's losing 99 out of 100. In the other 1 match, Sadulaev injury defaults.

To suggest otherwise is certifiably, batshit crazy.

The hypothetical is Sadulaev shows up at Iowa in the fall to wrestle the collegiate season. For some reason some guys act as if it would be like Messi trying to strike out Ohtani.

Oh: And in this scenario, they are wrestling folkstyle, and Saddy briefly forgets and attempts a gut/lace. That's the kind of mistake it would take to make this happen.

I truly hope Jax or Vega wrestle Ono next year in a Folkstyle match so we can find out definitively. I have zero doubt that Ono loses to either guy.

The blue side is on the Pennsylvania side too…graphic science never lies. Cover blown!
