I asked the google about this and their AI came up with this. The Platner tattoo was an SS Totenkopf (Death's Head) skull and crossbones emblem. The Totenkopf was historically a military insignia used by the Nazi SS, including the units that administered and guarded death camps. [1, 2, 3] So either he knew, or was an idiot and just thought it looked cool. If the latter, why did he remove it?
