Part of PSUs sauce for their guys performing so well at Nationals is that they emphasize that any success in wrestling is temporary so just relax and compete hard.. Add in the religious aspect. As in the trusting of a higher power do not stressing about things out of their control.. it leads to guys doing well. Now for the people that get unnecessarily triggered by the mention of religion and/or like to do the “ugh I’m soo superior because I don’t believe in religion” schickt.. I say this as someone who is not religious.. it’s possible to understand why believing in a higher power helps them compete better AND not believe in religion

Excelling on both the mat and the classroom?

@Jason Bryant can we get the academic all American list? Or does it come out after the season? -
that sucks :(. Represented the SoCon and the South well. Was only a 1 time North Carolina state champ as well. Bentley can be as annoying as Zeke sometimes but he can coach as well as anyone

Maximum wrestling credentials to obtain disrespect on forums?

People are allowed to have their opinions. But it does get tiresome when people are told certain things that jive with their.. elementary attitudes and they get in a huff -

Buddy. I’m well aware you’ll double down on being pedantic. So here we go… The amount of kids who can play more than 1-2 sports in high school has shrunk because of the direction of things… Especially because sports are so much more expensive now.. working class families can’t really always afford more than 1-2 sports… I kinda doubt youve been around nfl or DI football players that much if you think that they prove the multi sport thing. If you want to quibble over exact terms or use a known headcase as your thing that’s fine. If you want to hate on Askren because he’s vocal about a common but quiet view of Bono.. especially by former athletes of his… that’s fine
-
You’re getting pedantic because instead of understanding there’s a middle ground between your La La lane of playing multiple sports in hs like it’s 1981…and having prepubescent kids overtrain… If you want to quibble over exact ages.. cool. Literally everyone else gets my point. Especially because you’re ignoring the most important point… the AWA coaches don’t run off or completely ignore the kids who may take a couple years to catch on… which is what most “elite” clubs do
-
Yup, or their “buddies” did it so the want to defend it
-
There’s no inconsistency about not overdoing the little kiddy wrestling.. and not putting up with wannabe tuff guy parents.. which is exactly what he does… and then letting the more serious kids dial in when they’re in high school…
-
Telling the more serious kids what to do if they want to get to the next level in no way changes my point about him not doing the the bad stuff that is making youth wrestling detrimental to the growth of the sport. And the way you’re looking at it is.. not complete. Him coaching the best kids that way doesn’t change the fact he’s not running off kids early and he’s not doing wannabe tuff guy elementary coach crap.
-
Im not really salty about anything. It’s more so looking at things as they are and long term.
-
The way you defend some of the toxic aspects of the sport does surprise
-
The percentage on the toxic way working is pretty low… the amount of those kids staying in wrestling after they’re done.. is even less Long term sustainability is the goal. There is a lot of unnecessary running off of kids and making kids hate the sport. Again the word is “unnecessary” Quite frankly, the people who are okay with the toxic culture and parenting are never the high level athletes or coaches.. and they were high level at something else.. they never actually were put through the year round stuff at those younger ages. So they’ve “seen” a bunch but never actually done it. There’s a reason Askren is so consistently putting out high level athletes And I get your whole thing is being the niche sport guy inside of the niche sport
-
Nah you explained it pretty well
-
Wrestleknownothing explained it pretty well. I’ll also add that there are many club coaches that would do things similarly if they could. The problem is that, for 95%+ of guys, if you actually want to build a sustainable club financially. You have to cater to the parents that do the toxic stuff. They’re almost always the ones most willing to spend the money

Indiana State tournament, two more weekends

They might move it to Evansville?? Ew -
Just so it’s clear. It’s not just SDSU guys that have.. mixed opinions on Bono. Similar issues have popped up everywhere he’s gone. Wisconsin as a state is in a pickle. They finally are relevant as a hs state but none of their kids are staying. The real problem is youth culture, Askren is succeeding so we’ll because he’s powerful enough to nip the normal youth toxicity and burnout out of his clubs wrestling and development. Especially the dads. He can just kick them out and move on. He also coaches like normal kids can become elite. Almost anyone who tries to beat Askrens results and provide an alternative for Wisconsin in less than 10 years will run into the same toxic dad coach issues undercutting wrestling and he’ll still be churning out studs. People get butthurt about what he says about youth wrestling.. but the way he’s doing things where youth doesn’t matter so much and they’re genuinely trying to create kids who actually want to wrestle for 30 years is working
-
I mean, if you don’t care about keeping a modicum of competitive balance and want the sport to shrink.. sure
-
Wrestling keeps shooting itself in the foot and a good chunk want to act like the angry entitled little man martyr instead of taking the steps to be up there with the big sports. Where I coach, we in our area have a new admin who overwhelmingly is supportive of wrestling. Even helped the coaches association with printing out certificates out of his own pocket.. in return he respects professionalism, coaches to answer emails, communicate appropriately if there are bus issues, and have their paperwork in order.. the same thing he expects from football and basketball coaches.. coaches keep coming to me as the Coaches association head and whining about him expecting “too much”. Even though it’s the same expectations as football.. then whine about not getting enough support
