I got yelled at when I talked about this in a different thread, but I think it’s a fair question to ask. Again I’m on record as saying guys being able to wrestle and get paid or at least get some of their schooling paid for while they get a graduate degree is one good thing about the free Covid year. But I’ve looked around and it seems a decent amount of the higher profile grad transfers are getting “certificates” and/or are enrolled in masters programs completely unrelated to their undergrad. Of course they all already have undergrad degrees from big name schools which is more than most can say, and several already have graduate degrees which is more than even more people can say, and certificate programs can still be beneficial for their resumes, but I would bet there are quite a few of these guys that don’t actually finish the program they’re in. Of course I don’t blame them if they were getting paid to do it. For example, one of the most prominent recent transfers, who even spent 2 years at his second school, is listed on the roster as a “non-degree student.” At “Transfer U,” of their 5 notable transfers this season, they were only enrolled in 2 different programs, one of them being a certificate and the other being a very different field than most of their undergraduate degrees (although as mentioned some of them did already have graduate degrees from their prior school, and yes it is possible they may actually be more interested in this field than their undergrad major). Interestingly, this particular graduate program probably would have been helpful for the “non-degree student” mentioned earlier.

One name I haven’t seen mentioned is Dagen Condomitti, 157 for Oregon State. He was a top 100 recruit but looks like he hasn’t had any D1 matches through his redshirt + redshirt freshman years

Did Derek Fix have any qualifications besides coaching Daton before being named head coach of the Cowboy RTC? Although to be honest, my bigger question is why wasn’t he fired for having PED’s in an unmarked bottle in a house with kids in it, but I digress

Agreed. PSU (Dean, Kerk, Mesenbrink) and to a lesser extent Iowa (Caliendo) seems be the only teams I can think of bringing in transfers to bump R12/AA level guys out of the lineup.

You were right (well only for 1 season). Also a good thread bump of Minnow deleting the evidence for things he gets wrong. I think it’s okay to be wrong sometimes, but he should own it.

Yeah I know it’s been stated that AD’s might not really care about wrestling as long as there are no scandals. But if Buffalo cares, Wisconsin probably should.

Well let’s see. Their star just transferred out, I believe without even graduating. They scored 24.5 points this year, and by my math only 1.5 of them are returning next year (Zargo). The famous and outspoken coach of the best club in the state has publicly stated he doesn’t like Bono and seems to discourage guys from going there. They’re not in a great spot currently by most objective metrics.

All else equal I would agree, but people don’t seem to be too thrilled with how Wisconsin is doing currently, which is why I would think Reader might be looking for a way out, and obviously this would be a step up in title. Because of Wisconsin’s situation, I’m not sure if I’d say potentially going after an AHC of a mid-tier (at best) B10 team is considered a “champagne taste,” but no I have no idea the salary Reader makes vs what CMU is paying. Honestly I’d think Borrelli probably made a pretty good salary considering how long he was there. It’s certainly not that uncommon for AHC’s from top schools to be named HC’s at smaller ones. Adam Hall being a recent example.

Bekzod and Franklin Gomez had actually lived in the countries they represented, I don’t believe Micic, RBY, Gomez, Rivera, Cruz or Amine (among others) had. I don’t have an issue with guys competing for other countries, but I think we’re at the point where it’s not good for USA wrestling when you’ve got Americans winning world golds for other countries, and not 1, not 2, but 3 Americans already qualified for the Olympics at 57kg (and 2 at 65kg), but no USA wrestlers. I’m no Dagestan expert, but based on those numbers I kinda think we are at that level now.
