Who on this board was the worst wrestler?
treep2000 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
I wasn't bad, but I wasn't great either. Concussions is what did me in and my career, too early. Now a middle aged man living vicariously through everyone else. I had some headscratcher losses, some big wins, and then some matches where all I could do is lose and try not to get pinned (thank you Joe Heskett). Will always love the sport and the community. -
At this point the duals simply do not matter.

You know as well as I do that the tourney in March is different. I fully get the facts and points.. suppose I'm just calling my shot...

R12 at best, but sure

Tom Brands hasn’t seen anyone better than Lee
treep2000 replied to Eagle26's topic in College Wrestling
Deep water. Lee needs to watch out if someone can take him into deep water. In watching the match vs. Barnett, I couldn't help but think that Lee was staggering and winded. Granted, we know the result, but that caught my eye. If he wrestled NATO or Suriano now, I'm not sure he'd have the tank to win. -
It'll be another transfer. Brooks isn't a large 184, and starocci isn't a large 174

We had similar discussions about Burroughs during his reign. Who would be his next domestic loss, and by when. Kyle Dake provided that answer. But, what about Snyder? He's been untouchable domestically. Cox would be the logical choice to snag a win. However, if it's not Cox, then who? By when? Is this opponent still in college? In high school? Younger? Cox is the clear frontrunner to hand Snyder a loss, but I can't seem to wrap my head around, anyone, that is currently 17 years old or older, that may even come close. Thoughts? Discuss!

I would like to think that Hepner, if beating high level competition and the current starter, would be given the chance. I don't think Ryan will build a lineup based on name recognition, but rather, real results. Something does seem amiss with Kharchla. He may be cutting too much?

My two cents, FWIW, from the USA/Iran Title Match: 57kg: Zane looked real good. Him and Nicky Pushups are going to continue to push Gilman, which only makes the USA better. As far as his antics at the end... good on him. My only concern was whether or not the Iranian opponent was going to move suddenly, running into Zane's bottom jaw, and then Zane biting through his tounge. 61kg: I love watching Gross wrestle. His style, if you can call it that, is full of wackiness and mystery. I never really truly know how his matches will go. I think it baffles his opponents (most of the time), and when baffled, he techs. The problem with his style is that he can give up points in a hurry too... regardless, great effort. Fun to watch. 65kg: Yianni. He's "right there" with the #1 guy, once again. It did appear to me that the Iranian opponent was able to push Yianni around the mat quite a bit. I think they ended up grounded 5-6 times. Regardless, I really like Yianni at the weight and think he has the tools to be competitive, and win, against the World's Elite. 70kg: PANTALEO! I viewed Alec as a significant underdog against Yazdani. Competitive? Yes! Controversial? Yes! But, Pantaleo wins! Loved the effort, the emotion, the positioning. 74kg: Nolf looked good all weekend, but ran into a highly defensive wrestler, defensive enough to negate everything that Nolf was throwing at him. Nolf is special, but he'll have to figure a few things out to rise to the top still. 79kg: Burroughs. The shocker of the night. I don't have much to say, other than predicting that Burroughs will take this rare "L" and turn it into motivation to win the 79kg World Championship in 2023. 86Kg: Zahid. Oh my... his first two matches looked incredible. The match against the Iranian started off the same way. Similar to other posters, I do question his gas tank. I think he puts so much pressure and so much energy into the first period that it zaps his tank and he ends up making potentially costly mistakes. Still a great win, but potentially closer than it "could" have been. 92kg: Jackson! It's been really fun watching him grow since his NCAA days. His positioning, strength, and freestyle IQ are all increasing. I feel he simply continues to improve. With Cox moving up to 97kg to battle it out with Snyderman, I do see a scenario where Jackson is our Team USA rep in 2023. Would be interesting to see if Moore drops from 97kg to battle at 92kg. If so, this could be a very entertaining Final X. 97kg: Snyder. Unphased. Focused. Determined. Self-Confident. Committed. These are words that come to mind when I saw Snyderman walk on the mat. Against the reigning 2x WC at 92kg, they visually appeared to be of very similar size (with Snyder being slightly "thicker"). Snyder controlled the match, start to finish, and never (in my opinion) seemed to be out of "his" position. He just keeps racking up win after win against the World's elites. 125kg: Zillmer. Agreed with previous posters in that he is small. A huge underdog in my opinion against Masoumi. If he's committed to 125kg, then hitting the weight room with Snyderman wouldn't be a bad idea at all. He has a tank. He's fearless. He's just undersized against the giants of the weight, YET COMPETITIVE.

I'm not sure moving up will resolve the issues. I know he wrestled 70kg in some freestyle tourneys and he didn't have the perceived improvement that many would expect. The Sasso that beat Lugo his freshman year appears to be better than the current version, but of course, this is based on pure observations of one person (me), and I had elevated expectations of his continued forward, positive, progression. I want him to do well. He's a great a wrestler, but to your point, may have not only the reliance on gumby, but the weight cut to deal with. Solve both... problem solved.
-
Sasso looks great when he is the aggressor. He looks like a fish when he relies on his rubber knee crap. Opponents have figured it out. What they wouldn't expect is a full 6 minutes of aggression, instead of taking a lead and then resting on his gumby skills. I said it on other boards, I hate Sasso's style. I love my Buckeyes, but man...

I've hated Sassos style of giving up his legs for years and continue to hate it.

Hope you're right. Love being wrong when guys outperform expectations.

Should the NCAA bring back 118 & Unlimited?
treep2000 replied to TexRef's topic in College Wrestling
Fantastic. -
Fair... i did say "tend" to not mix well. I also reserved the right to be wrong. However, we do see a much higher correlation (posted previously by numerous posters, Flo, etc.) that show success at age level freestyle international tournies/championships and NCAA success.
-
Fair, if you're asserting that Adams will be a good backup.
-
Star is overly confident. His U23 experience should teach a lesson. Still a ways to go take usurp the reigning world champ(s). Love his desire, but to speak so certainly is just setting up for failure. Look at Burroughs. The man is still humble after ALL of his achievements. And he has a LOT of achievements, dontcha think?

Should the NCAA bring back 118 & Unlimited?
treep2000 replied to TexRef's topic in College Wrestling
NCAA should align with freestyle senior weights. Allows for smoother transition to world level achievements and guys can settle in weights more efficiently and effectively. -
Not a big deal... until I'm proven wrong. Good greco guys and ncaa folk tend to not mix well. Look at the Koontz Bros. At tOSU. Very solid greco guys, but backups at best at ncaa d1.

treep2000 replied to TexRef's topic in College Wrestling
Imagine Kollin Moore or Kyle Snyder at 215 in college... -
In the weight class that could be 118... Heinselman is the champ! McHenry would be runner up and neither would have to cut weight (seemingly).

Shame we don't have the old forum history. I predicted (for those that remember) that Carroll would flip again. To where, I never claimed, just that he'd flip again.. and, he flipped again.

Most Notable results weekend of 11-4 to 11-6
treep2000 replied to Dark Energy's topic in College Wrestling
Mendez over Byrd is much more significant than Braunagel over Hoffman. Hoffman had a lights out tourney (for him) and AA'd. Mendez as a true frosh taking out the #5 in a meat grinder of a weight is huge.
