2023 Transfer Portal
98lberEating2Lunches replied to Indiana-Hawk-Wrestling-Fan's topic in College Wrestling
On the one hand it'd be their money so they'd be free to do with it what they wish. On the other hand will the protective cocoons of helicopter parents ever end? If they are trying to buy a championship team for their son, this would seem only somewhat worse than the Hollywood admissions scandal. But with NIL, it seems a better tactic. Marginal walk-on athletes with rich parents could be highly sought after commodities, all within the rules. -
Best and Worst Wrestler Interviewees
98lberEating2Lunches replied to SocraTease's topic in College Wrestling
Which is worse, boonies or middle of nowhere? I've been told by city folk I live in the latter. I like to think I live in a somewhat distant suburb of an agricultural county. -
Best and Worst Wrestler Interviewees

I am not a Spencer hater. Everyone knows Spencer is not 100% healthy when 100% healthy is compared with a Spencer pre-shoulder and multiple knee injuries. Nobody really knows whether Spencer is 100% healthy compared to what the best version of any future Spencer may ultimately become. The Iowa Hawkeyes seem to have a culture/tradition of figuring a way to compete through not being 100%. Terry Brands did as mentored by Dan Gable, who successfully did before him. Cory Clark did successfully as mentored by Terry Brands. Kemerer and Eierman were less successful. Spencer, himself, has had mixed success. I would say Spencer dropping out of the NCAA wrestlebacks and the US Open pre-semifinals are simply part of him and his coaches exploring how best to wrestle given his current (and perhaps likely future) state of health. It's part of his plan to figure a way to compete in hopes of achieving his ultimate goal--Olympic Gold. This does not seem to be an excuse, but rather reality. If it were simply explained by Spencer this way, I think he could be better off. Alternatively, when an interview is given he could simply state, "I believe most people appreciate my present situation, and I won't be publicly speaking about my health for the foreseeable future." I think more 'haters' object to: 1) the general talk about not being 100% healthy without specifics about how this led to his US Open withdrawal; and 2) having his father present a similar general message, over the fact that he dropped out of both tournaments. -
Where should nationals be held?

Washington D.C. Capitol One Arena. It's a natural for Nationals. American University and University of Maryland could co-host. Plenty to do. Plenty of hotels. Transportation by Metro all around, including from Reagon National. Two other nearby airports (Thurgood Marshall and Dulles). Pretty much a no brainer. -
When will you revisit to rescore individual matches with new 2024 rules (3pt takedown, no riding time point without a turn) to change bonus points accordingly (e.g., some DEC -> MDs, some MDs -> TFs)? Like all other what ifs, it costs me nothing to challenge WkN. I wonder whether the gap will shrink.

Any such move would likely be framed as: "The Wrestling qualification process did not comport with my health for the 2024 Olympic cycle. I did my best, but was unable to make the team. So now I am onto the next best thing to achieve my lifelong goal of becoming an Olympic champion. Competing for is the only way I can. I'm not giving up on my dream. I want to compete at the Paris Olympics in 2024. I am dedicating this competition to my mother, who is French. Without her love and support I wouldn't be in this position. I plan to compete for the in 2028." I'd see no crybaby here. Easy as to sell this. It's got Mom, dreams, and fortitude wrapped up in it. People everywhere eat that shit up. I don't know what sponsors could want more than a high visibility competing athlete with a compelling backstory that includes overcoming adversity and doing whatever it takes. Spencer has that working for him in spades. Still for the Summer games, he would've been better of if he were a female gymnast.

US Open - April 26th-30th, 2023

I forgot dog piling is the norm in these parts. Thanks for the polite reminder.

And your point is? Hint: Concentrate on just the last two letters.

Too bad the thread title misspelled his name.

Just saying he has to find a way to Paris 2024. That's the advertised next thing. That's why he's pushing the limit. I believe he'll take whatever immediate step he can the best he can, because that seems to be what he has done so far. So the ending above can be reserved for 2028. Companies love free advertising through coverage of their athletes. Spencer needs to compete to be covered. This far outweighs any potential fan backlash. Emphasizing his mother's unfair treatment acts to dampen further overt backlash. Of course, haters are going to hate, Spencer might not wish to wrestle in Paris by any means, and there's no guarantee he could compete for France.

Don't be so sure. A big Iowa donor liked my similar train of thought on GIA (formerly HR). Several HR posters and WkN like the idea. Rudis could love the publicity associated with the storyline. That storyline could include French mother who hasn't seen her son wrestle live since NCAAs, due to boorish American fan behavior, returns to her homeland to see her son win gold. And maybe Rudis wants to be an international brand.

The US qualification process and competition may not comport with his health. French competition and qualification of the weight at 57kg may be easier and better allow him to more fully recover. His mother is French. 2024 is in Paris. A Parisienne audience may be a kinder gentler one. Amine, Micic, and Gomez have already paved the way. Maybe just get comfortable with the idea. (I understand 4/28 may be 'Create Your Best Cinnabon Thread' Day.)

I wonder whether a lack of production at NCAAs after working the portal (with the aid of big OU wrestlong supporter NIL sponsorships) could've led to Roselli's departure.
-
For scoring record - 3-pt TD rule passes leading to a statistically significant more number of TFs and MDs across the board, combined with an analysis showing less team points would've been achieved using the prior scoring method. For 10 AAs - Nothing. They'll all be competing using the same rules all year (e.g., scoring, portal, NIL).

This is just getting ridiculous

I don't know about his age, but I have surmised: 1) He's hard on one side of the abortion divide. 2) He does not like any implication that he abandoned his alma mater for thought to be greener pastures based on being a Metcalf fanboy. 3) He staunchly disagrees with any assertion that he is a blowhard. I must've had an almost TBar-like ability to push his buttons, or something. Try not to now-a-days. -
Spencer Leeβs first interview since NCAAs

I guess one could just ask those two who used the terms. Otherwise neither of us can know their intent with certainty until they state it. Then again, we might not trust them to be truthful. Sovl it might be best to just live in the world we've each created in our own minds.
