  1. No. As far as I can tell, he has long been on record as willing to support any Brands' decision to recruit the Ferraris with appropriate guard rails in place for the family. Ultimately any Ferrari admission to the University or joining Iowa wrestling are the University of Iowa and Coach Brands respective decision (not his). I recall nothing on the forum stating or otherwise indicating he attempted to persuade the Brands one way or the other. I recall nothing on the forum stating he would personally bankroll Ferrari NIL $, if the Brands chose to recruit the Ferraris and their joining was contingent on that kind of sponsorship. Some people seem to be inferring his stated support of the Brands and their decision-making is an implicit form of persuasion. I don't read it that way, even if it can be contrasted to other anonymous posters vehemently objecting to one or more particular Ferraris joining the Iowa wrestling family.
  2. Either a birthday cake or a family-run juice bar offering. Hard to tell.
  3. Produced two of arguably best NCAA wrestlers and head coaches in the past 60 years. One would be hard-pressed to find a better pair of wrestlers/head coaches from the same school regardless of measure.
  4. Ummm... and rich people gaming the tax system would be a "Holy Crap" revelation exactly how? Truly rich people live off loans and have little income, so they've no need for charitable deductions to itemize. If they are interested in NIL donations to acquire the greatest talent, I doubt they would prefer these athletes be required to make charitable appearances over other more direct and lucrative methods to provide NIL sponsorship $.
  5. Glad to see it wasn't fixing or insider info per latest report. https://www.actionnetwork.com/legal-online-sports-betting/head-of-gaming-commission-says-no-evidence-that-iowa-iowa-state-games-were-compromised Not sure what "illicit gambling" really means.
  6. I think this kind of investigation is indicative of an abnormal amount of action on one side of a specific sporting event's result. Sports gaming commisions routinely look for these anamolies and investigate them. For instance, let's say a few students on a particular team plan to bet against themselves when the odds / money line is most favorable. The word leaks out among a subset of all student athletes. From these a further subset bet, and so the number of bets and/or total $s bet on the winning side of the game result are statistically higher than reasonably expected. The sports book could then also determine likely connections among those who made wagers via available big data collectors. I would not be surprised to learn student athletes flush with NIL could get caught up in such exploits and its subsequent investigation.
  7. See your first sentence seemed to emphasize tax deductibility, so excuse me for pointing out that's largely meaningless to most taxpayers. I would agree that as donating time is normally free, it would seem excessive to pay a student athlete $50k for an appearance at charity event. In other words, I would be hard pressed to justify that market value. I can see transportation costs and per diem being paid for, but not much, if anything, over that. Well maybe tools if there building houses for something like Habitat for Humanity. As "Success with Honor" describes it, the charity option was created to create this type of giving experience opportunity for a student athlete who might not otherwise be able to manage it. "Success with Honor" helps make and maintain connections with interested charitable organizations. Certain "Success with Honor" donors believe this type of opportunity to be important for well-rounded development, and so they give to it over the other options, which perhaps you see as less perverse, that remain available.
  8. Post probably also belongs in the twins separated at birth / doppelganger thread.
  9. I think it's better to stick with the same process in both non-Olympic and Olympic Pan Am years (i.e., whether or not it's the continental qualifying tournament). That would mean sending whomever might best finish to qualify the weight (i.e., finish 1st or second, which almost all did). Probably USA wrestling feels similarly, so they do this whether or not the current World Team member is injured, already qualified for the Olympics, or doesn’t see Pan Am participation consistent with their training. This seems better than having to subjectively pick who they believe is an up-and-comer. It avoids potential claims of favoritism of the best-funded RTCs and allegations of ageism. There is a junior Pan Am tournament for younger up-and-comers.
  10. And here I thought Bono still had to release him from Wisconsin.
  11. I believe your mixing Seinfeld references. The Farbman was a large chest of drawers, which Kramer used as a microtel of sorts. Armoires were in the Soup Nazi episode. First, one was purchased by Elaine, but she couldn't move it into her apartment that day. It was stolen by "street toughs" while under Kramer's guard. He replaced it with one from the Soup Nazi.
  12. Sure, that is the legend. I think cold calls may have been made, rather than or in addition to emails. Compliance departments maintain records and report to the NCAA on behalf of university athletics. They aren't part of any university's outward-facing public relations department. Regardless of method used to communicate, the sole respondent was in the extreme minority (rightfully so for cause, IMHO). The sole respondent could've been a new hire and not fully trained up. It's not as if no response from others can only mean none or too few work there to adequately perform what the NCAA requires for member compliance.
  13. Here's how it can be: It depends on the collective and the nature of the work being done by the student athlete through the collective. In the case of Penn States "Success with Honor" one of its giving options is charitable. This option aims at developing student athlete character through their charitable works. In other words, funds and the athletes time are used for charitable purposes. This and only this contribution type may be itemized as a charitable deduction. Deductng any charitable giving on income taxes depends on itemizing. For itemizing to make sense for individual tax payers, the total itemized deductions would need to exceed the standard deduction. The vast majority of individual tax payers do not itemize. Fewer itemized since the Jobs and Tax Act passed. So it's really not a big deal. It's definitely not a "Holy Crap" level news.
  14. Who has had the worst off season, portal and decommitment wise: Minnesota, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Northwestern, or Iowa? Probably not Northwestern, since their losses may be attributable to graduate school requirements (in addition to UofM NIL $). I listed Iowa only because they seem to have largely been unsuccessful in the portal game despite their NIL $. (Pastry inspired.)
  15. I would love for Tom Brands to reserve one of Gabe Arnold's RS attached matches for whomever the PSU opponent is in Carver Hawkeye in 2023-24. Given the talk, it would have some entertainment value. And regardless of the result, it would be a great learning experience for one or both participants.
  16. If there's not a true 3rd place match at Final X, does USA Wrestling still require the 3rd place World team member to attend? To make weight? I only ask, because there's always the possibility of 1 or 2 not making weight. And if they don't, I could see even more complaints about golden tickets and limit challenge tournaments.
  17. 80-2. "most of his losses to Iowa." (1 of 2) "short stocky build" (neither loss to that type) 0/10.
  18. Ok. I guess I just don't see getting beat by someone who also didn't finish top 5 in worlds to not finish top 2, as perhaps influenced by seeding, as a landmine. I thought that was normal competition. If there's actual homecooking or manipulation of assigned referees then I could see that as a landmine. But as 2024 Pan Am wrestling will be in Cleveland OH, I would say non-USA wrestlers might have more landmines to avoid.
  19. 2024 Pan Am games is Americas qualifier. Not really sure what landmines are associated with it.
  20. No. Carson had a different kind of disorder all together - compartment syndrome. Peyton's condition looks more like that of the former Utah, 49er, KC, Washington NFL QB, Alex Smith, although I'm not saying it's identical.
  21. Not really Just that it seems more visible, I suppose. Maybe there's some recency bias on my part. I was aware of another wrestler who went to a big time program some years ago, and I thought of the possibility then, although it wasn't necessarily his parents money. Also, I don't know of any corresponding donations (but not saying they couldn't have occurred). I hadn't given it much thought one way or the other.
  22. Should've written somewhat better. My bad. Good catch.
  23. Parents not coaches. Still the start could be seen as a quid pro quo of sorts. Then again maybe UofM didn’t see the need to forfeit, didn't have a better option at that weight that day, and Consuelos was game. Of course it's all speculation.
  24. I think in the definition of creating a protective cocoon that extends into young adulthood, financial position is implicit. Trying to buy a son's membership on an NCAA Championship Team seems a bit much to me, assuming that's what's being done. I guess growing up knowing what demographics were drafted into the Vietnam War (or proactively enlisted into the Air Force after seeing their low draft number), I've become sensitized to inherent inequities associated with this kind of parenting, perhaps more than some. Again, it'd be their money and their choice. And parents are free to raise their children with every advantage they can afford. But it also could be contributing to the whole "adulting is hard" mantra of today.
