This is just getting ridiculous
98lberEating2Lunches replied to Eagle26's topic in College Wrestling
For the record, was it TBar or Tbar? MSU accused me of being Tbar once. And when I replied I was not TBar, he suspected me even more. Said that was exactly what TBar would do. He has accused a few other posters since, so I think I'm off the hook. -
Spencer Lee’s first interview since NCAAs
98lberEating2Lunches replied to bnwtwg's topic in College Wrestling
Not defending just saying, I believe "faux GOAT" and "Lord Spencer" references are more a shot at Iowa posters than Spencer. Some Iowa posters professed Spencer to GOAT status and made statements taken as veneration, such as designating him head coach and/or AD in waiting. I don't see this much different than the way some Iowa fans post about Cael being treated as Godlike bu PSU wrestling fans. So I think there's a broader context. I do my best not to partake in exchanges that might be seen as belittling college wrestlers. I don't tilt against the windmills of posters who do, by trying to get them to stop. -
Greatest 3xer of the Wrestlestat era

See I didn't read this earlier. Maybe you addressed my question. Regardless, I probably wouldn't weight this as high. Styles not projections from algorithms make matches. -

I would probably delete the % sum (% bonus of all matches), because it is derivative of prior rows. When weighting, I probably wouldn't weight Average Pin or TF time very much. Some of that may depend too much on the coaches strategy for what he wants the wrestler to work on, or the weakness of the particular opponents who were Pinfalled or TFed. I have to read the meaning of the Average win-type rank, because I'm not sure weather that was already covered. Without reading, I would probably delete them. I might also change tourney points to average tourney finish (so not to again value Pinfall & TF & MD). Then I would delete lowest Tournament finish, since it would already be covered in average tournament finish. If one DNQ or place, shove lowest round placement eliminated (12, 16, 33). -
Greatest 3xer of the Wrestlestat era

Thanks. And now if you eliminate some the double counting of rows in normalized spreadsheet how much more of a gap between low and high happens for Nolf, Nickal, and Retherford. And how much would Spencer improve? Lowest number being better, using that method, I am going to go Nolf, NIckal, Retherford, then TBD. I had a feeling Spencer would look better. -

(I edited to use Pinfall to honor your position.) I think % done that way could eliminate the need to look at some of the rows. It would also avoid the risk of double-valuing an evaluation criteria, given total matches is already accounted for. I probably would create explicit weightings for each criteria along with some scoring method. I think it's clear yours might be international accolades. -
Greatest 3xer of the Wrestlestat era
98lberEating2Lunches replied to Wrestleknownothing's topic in College Wrestling
@Wrestleknownothing If we assume the consensus Pinfall > TF > MD, then for color coding gradient purposes of TF %s, would it be better to take that % as one of total matches that did not end in a Pinfall? Likewise, would it be better to take the % of MDs of all matches that did not end in either a Pinfall or TF? -
The 4 Timers - Pat, Cael, Logan, Kyle & Yianni
98lberEating2Lunches replied to AgaveMaria's topic in College Wrestling
I'd say it was Kyle bias. Thread was talking about Dake, but poster was taking about Snyder. Taking Sr year at Olympic Training Center in CO could be relevant, if the wrestler had been a HS 3-timer prior and subsequent NCAA 4-timer. Could become relevant in some future, I guess. Similarly, a 4-time national prep champion could be considered relevant to the discussion, if that's not to be considered a 4-time state champion. Thinking of Aaron Brooks here. Maybe could've won 5 HS titles in MD. -
This is just getting ridiculous

Thanks for posting this. I noticed the name of a friend and former co-worker on it. I knew he had wrestled, but didn't realize he was an ASICS HS Other All-America Selection. I texted him and confirmed. We had texted previous to and during NCAAs. When I explained the nature of the debate (relative strength of Gable vs Cael recruits / they're relative contribution to dominance)--that caused me to see his name listed from 1983-- he replied. " " That's a direct quote. I think it pretty much sums up this argument. -
Mineo reporting on Twitter: Nagao to Iowa
98lberEating2Lunches replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Gotcha. Yeah, with the 3-pt takedown he'll (like most everyone) need to get better offensively and defensively on their feet. Necessity is a powerful motivator, so I think he’ll be up to it. -

98lberEating2Lunches replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Per WrestleStat, in two years (RS, FR) Nagao has only once won by riding time point (2-1). Based on this, it doesn't seem he'd be greatly affected. The new rules don't prohibit riding, and it doesn't seem Nagao's style of riding would produce stalling calls while he's on top. -

By rule, NIL contacts can't be dependent on athletic performance. They are supposed to be for something tangible (e.g., service, royalties for T-shirts) where the payment amount relates to some kind of idea of its market value. I'm sure a NIL contract could make full payment up front for specific future scheduled activities. And if the athlete did not fulfill their contractual obligations, the sponsor could seek a remedy via the courts. -
Yes, I understand graduates continue to be able to transfer without losing eligibility, even if they had transfered previously. Entering graduate school implies seeking some specific education. There is no guarantee of admission into the graduate school associated with one's undergraduate degree.

Iowa's lack of religiousness hurting them?
98lberEating2Lunches replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Did you know the US Naval Academy encourages its recruits to engage a religion, if they aren't already? They don't care which, just pick one and it will be supported on the base. The US Marine motto, "For God, Corps, County" wouldn't make sense without this practice. Oh, and that it's military isn't lost on me with respect to the second sentence. Sort of interesting though that you used the word "killed" over "murdered." -
I think @Husker_Du has made it publicly known that he and Cael go way back and competed at Reno at the same time while in HS. They are contemporaries of the same generation. Tom Brands is not. This seems a much simpler explanation as to why Cael and Willie might be able to better relate to one another than Tom and Willie. I doubt Cael kisses Willie's ass, vice versa, or either would even like the other if that's what they believed the other one was doing.

Any public school teacher with 20+ students in their classroom can tell you students with lesser foundations from prior grade levels will take a disproportionate amount of time to bring up to current grade level standards. And students with attitudes and effort inconsistent with learning will also occupy a disproportionate amount of a teacher's time. This is the case regardless of the fact that each grade is teaching to specific grade-level standards. There is nothing unique about Cael's system in this regard. The only difference is Cael recruits wrestlers with a sufficient foundation and a demonstrated attitude and effort that he believes is consistent with achieving the highest level of wrestling. Cael chooses to operate as a PhD professor of wrestling rather than an elementary school teacher of wrestling. This is what he likes to do. If he much more preferred to develop / improve lesser wrestlers, I do not doubt that he would be very successful doing so.

Not only this, but back in the day travel was not what it is. So depending on the location of nationals, some schools couldn't even afford to send all of their qualified wrestlers to compete. The location of nationals and Oklahoma's central geography in the US gave it a decided advantage. Wrestlers who understood this, likely factored it in to their school selection.

Oh boy, you're not a salesman by any chance? Maybe there's a decision for AB to Olympic RS that's still on the table so some flexibility is warranted. Maybe during the sales pitch the coaches sought to test Bernie's reaction to such flexibility. Maybe they talked to him as a collaborator not a dictator would so the meeting had a greater chance of yielding a successful result.
-
Not what I said. I was pointing at a potential subtlety in presentation by coaches of teams competing for Bernie's service. I don't believe coaches are directing NIL consortium or sponsor budgets. I do believe coaches are managing scholarship allocations and team membership opportunities. I believe PSU offered Bernie an opportunity to compete for a starting spot in the lineup as a rostered team member. I believe they convinced him they would support Bernie attaining his goals. This is standard operating procedure, and what PSU coaches strive for all their wrestlers each year. I seriously doubt Bernie was verbally guaranteed either the 184 or 197 starting position. More likely he was asked where he saw himself fitting in. Then PSU coaches likely advised him whether they thought it was workable. They might have even tested him with other options than any stated preference. I believe Bernie's choice of PSU and his acceptance by PSU is a reflection of some mutual benefit, likely including his opportunity to wrestle for an individual and team championship, earn NIL, and generally positively contribute to the team.
-
IDK about that, but early on (at least) he used to make a yearly appearance at the clothing store that sponsored PSU wrestling club gear and sign its merchandise for free. Don't know whether he still does or not.

Hair can be deceptive. The taller the hairstyle the more insecure a man is about their height.

All under the recent Name, Image, and Likeness rulings. Athletes can be paid for doing work regardless that they are current participants in NCAA athletics. The money comes from collectives formed outside of university scholarship programs that may or may not be formally affiliated or coordinated with the university. People who are fans of the program give money to collectives to support athletes or specific sports teams. Then these collective arrange activities for which the athlete does something of value for a payment. Alternatively, local sponsors may contact an athlete outside of the collective framework and offer him payment for some commensurate obligation. So some of the donor money that used to go to the university's general scholarship fund are now budgeted by donors where they more directly go to specific alhletes or sports. There's a big University of Miami donor who has helped in the latter manner. It's not in any way 'the university's money' that is being used. However, there is a finite amount of donor money, so NIL with little to no athletic scholarship allows university scholarship money to be spent elsewhere.
