House Settlement Hearing - April 7, 2025
Voice of the Quakers replied to Wrestleknownothing's topic in College Wrestling
NCAA and plaintiffs' attorneys are pushing back on the idea of exempting current athletes from roster caps. Teams have already budgeted for 2025-26, and many athletes in non-revenue sports have already made plans for new teams/schools for the new season. I'm guessing the judge goes along with the latest agreement between the attorneys. https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/44679918/roster-limit-changes-not-offered-latest-filing-ncaa-lawsuit-settlement -
The real reason Rob Koll left Cornell?
Voice of the Quakers replied to BruceyB's topic in College Wrestling
Short answer: Cornell wouldn't let Koll bring AJ Ferrari to campus. Glad to see these two icons reunited like a Hallmark movie in Chapel Hill. -

AJ is going to get three more years because the NCAA is not going to fight any of these requests while it is trying to figure out what a post-House settlement world looks like. -

I'd be worried about every PSAC school other than West Chester. -

Staying open is Clarion's priority, as it is for all of the PSAC schools right now. -
I remember being here in Philly when Molinaro chose down against Dake and the entire arena yelled “NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!”

1987 was a particularly good year for D2 at the D1 tournament. Besides Haselrig, Tim Wright of SIUE (then D2) and Roger Singleton of Grand Valley State both placed at 118 and Darryl Pope and Eric Mittlestead both placed for CSUB (then D2) at 177 and 190, respectively. I was at Penn when the decision to exclude D2 and D3 from all D1 championships was made in the early 1990s. (I believe T&F and other individual athletes were allowed to "compete up".) I remember a lot of hand-wringing about the sanctity of each division's championships. IMO, the quality of D2 and D3 wrestling has declined as a result as high-level athletes who preferred to attend D2 or D3 schools for whatever reason (campus size, proximity to home, academic program, etc.) have been "forced" to compete D1.

My advice: Coat your stomach with a cheesesteak and 4 ibuprofen before you go to bed Friday night/Saturday morning. It's not going to get you up for Session 5, but it should help with the hangover.

Philly - The details we all need to know

McGlinchey's at 259 S 15th St. is really hard to beat for low low prices. -
College athletes are generally not held to academic standards at all anymore. https://www.cnn.com/2014/10/22/us/unc-report-academic-fraud/index.html https://alumni.unc.edu/news/ncaa-no-significant-violations/#:~:text=The NCAA's Committee on Infractions,University will not be sanctioned.

This attitude is why college sports will have the Power 4 conferences, the Ivy League, and nothing else in a few years.
-
Why should we treat athletes different than regular students? The issues we have in college sports right now is that we don't treat athletes like regular students. Schools are accepting transfers - even in wrestling - they know will not graduate and are not working toward degrees. Likewise, normal students have power of contract, but not athletes. It all has to change.

Six years is actually becoming the norm, but I don't want to see college sports go that far. If your student finds they need an extra year to finish college, they are not alone. According to the U.S. Department of Education, in 2020 43.7% of students completed college in four years, 58.7% finished after 5 years, and 60.4% took 6 years. Many students finish college on individualized, unconventional timelines. https://collegiateparent.com/academics/5th-year-of-college-part-1/#:~:text=According to the U.S. Department, and 60.4% took 6 years.Much

This is where college sport is and should be going. Most undergraduates take five years to graduate; athletic eligibility should be in line with the typical student experience. The fight over eliminating redshirting is going to be intense. What about injuries? Gap years? Religious missions? Olympic training? The sob stories will be infinite. But, we have to get rid of the 7th and 8th year seniors. The lengthening of the college career is limiting opportunities for graduating high schoolers and professionalizing college sports further than needed.

God bless all the wrestlers competing for 3-8. But, Friday is a long liquid day and I need my rest and my Market before Finals Saturday night. -

I'm a Pat's fan. Some people like Geno's. Some people, for whatever reason, like Jim's on South Street. To each their own. Honestly, any food cart cooking in the morning will probably make you a great cheesesteak. -

Recollections from my six total years in Philly, the last NCAA tourney there and some other generic spitballing... Definitely recommend the SEPTA Orange Line to get to the arena. The trip from City Hall is not very long, but do plan on an hour given crowds on the train and crowds getting into the arena. And, Philly is a relatively inexpensive big city. Everyone has their favorite neighborhood, so I won't make a specific recommendation. But, if you stay east of the Schuylkill River and south of Spring Garden/Northern Liberties/Fairmount you will find a wide variety of bars and restaurants at various price points. Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are east of Center City and also readily accessible by the SEPTA Blue Line. That being said, I think you will find it inefficient to go back and forth from the arena to your hotel in between sessions. Xfinity Live will definitely keep you hydrated. A couple other recommendations if you're feeling adventurous: Call an Uber and have them take you and your group to Pat's/Geno's for the mandatory cheesesteak taste test. If you're looking to do something really different, Eastern State Penitentiary is amazing, and the Fairmount neighborhood is really cool. I'm partial to my old campus. Penn has the Palestra, Franklin Field, College Hall (the model for the Addams Family, mansion) and people will be generally nice enough to let you in to take a look around. (Franklin Field is almost always open to runners.) I plan on being at Reading Terminal Market for "breakfast" on Saturday to keep my streak of missing Session 5 alive. It's the largest food hall you can imagine, for lack of a better term. Enjoy your trip! -
Ivy League Tournament Pre-Seeds
Voice of the Quakers replied to Voice of the Quakers's topic in College Wrestling
Looks a lot better when your school finishes 10th instead of 16th at your conference tourney. To earlier posts, all other factors being equal, it's much more likely LIU and SHU wrestlers qualify for NCAAs in a smaller EIWA tournament. Less kids fighting for the automatic spot as champion, and much more likely an underdog can sustain a "heater" over a smaller number of matches to take one of the other available bids. -
Pretty straightforward. Not that there won't be upsets, but happy to know there will be a lot less random "occurrences" in a 6 team tournament than an 18 team tournament. https://ivyleague.com/news/2025/3/3/pre-seeds-and-brackets-set-for-inaugural-ivy-league-wrestling-tournament.aspx 125 Pounds (3 automatic bids) 1. Whats your Snyder Feeling?
Voice of the Quakers replied to Hammerlock3's topic in International Wrestling
Haven't seen an elite wrestler enjoy the journey as much as Snyder since Dave Schultz. Who else enters multiple events in a given month, let along a week like Snyder did last week? He'll have his ups and downs, like Dave did after 1984, but I'm not wishing him away anytime soon. -
HWTs don't get enough respect. By medals and longevity, Baumgartner is the US's best ever, but "moving brick walls" don't attract the admiration lightweights do.
