Fake news. It was either start at a weight that the two coaches would agree to (there was specific mention of "showcasing" a weight, in fact, in the rules) or random draw. The myth about it being either 125 or draw was just that...

Cliff Keen Las Vegas Wrestling Invitational
SetonHallPirate replied to Idaho's topic in College Wrestling
Knew he was going to be "the bad draw", but also knew I would be flamed for seeding an unranked guy with as many wins over D1 wrestlers while enrolled at Cornell as me. -
Well, new since the 2019 off-season, when they got rid of the draw (which was generally done with tongue depressors, for those wondering, although I know Michigan changed to a ten-sided die in its last year).

I like it, but I do think it needs to be improved...I'd like to see a "scratch" system, where coaches alternate striking weights they DON'T want to start at, and there's a coin flip between the last two. Besides, having a coin flip televised an hour before the dual starts is an absolute non-starter for the television networks, unless they tape-delay the coin flip only and show it at the top of the broadcast. The current college system would be better used in high school, IMO, where there already is a ton of weight behind the coin flip, and being able to choose the start weight would counterbalance that, but in college, almost nobody "matches up" due to the current qualifying system (especially in D-1).

Could think of worse airports to live in…imagine if somebody lived in the Stillwater Airport, for example! -
I wholeheartedly disagree...I'm fairly certain that it wouldn't help one iota.
-
The NWCA really tries their best, but at the same time, you can lead a horse to water, but...unless you're going to make every single high school coach in the country sit in on a lecture from Mike Moyer about how damaging the forfeit is to wrestling, you aren't going to change very much.

Pretty sure the Pac-12 wouldn't accept California Baptist (they do not like being called Cal Baptist, even though I know I'm fighting a losing battle, I'm going to bring that up) due to their being a religious institution affiliated with an organization that rejects LGBT beliefs (please do NOT argue over that can of worms I just mentioned). The conference has not had any members, including affiliates, who are religiously-affiliated since Gonzaga and Portland moved their baseball teams to their all-sports conference, the West Coast Conference, in 1995.

Should the NCAA bring back 118 & Unlimited?
SetonHallPirate replied to TexRef's topic in College Wrestling
Yeah...I'm with you. The fact is, compared to the numbers of wrestlers at the weights, generally (and this is pretty consistent over the past 15 years) the weights from 141-157 have had the highest numbers of wrestlers (in terms of weights the wrestlers are actually competing at), whereas 184 and 197 have been the lowest. Surely taking weights from the middleweights and giving them to the upperweights isn't going to stimulate demand for the upperweights to the level suggested. It's just not a finding that makes sense. -
Should the NCAA bring back 118 & Unlimited?
SetonHallPirate replied to TexRef's topic in College Wrestling
If you seriously think that adding weight classes (supply) at weights where there are fewer wrestlers (demand) will increase demand, I sincerely question your grasp on economics... The weight classes I suggested are based on data done by the NFHS and the NWCA... -
Should the NCAA bring back 118 & Unlimited?
SetonHallPirate replied to TexRef's topic in College Wrestling
You're missing what I'm saying. In terms of numbers of wrestlers that compete, on an annual basis, at the NCAA level, the weights that have the most numbers are 141-149-157, which is exactly where you're thinning out. The weights with the least numbers are 184 and 197, which is exactly where you're adding more weights. (I've literally been looking at these numbers every year for the past 12 years or so, with the exception of 2021, where everything was screwed up due to the truncated schedule) -
Should the NCAA bring back 118 & Unlimited?
SetonHallPirate replied to TexRef's topic in College Wrestling
Honestly, those weights take away from the middle, which is where we already have a glut of wrestlers, and move them up top, where there’s (aside from heavyweight) fewer wrestlers. I get the idea of rationalizing with freestyle, but for the NCAA population, they make no sense. -
Should the NCAA bring back 118 & Unlimited?
SetonHallPirate replied to TexRef's topic in College Wrestling
The weights I've been pushing for are as follows (there's a reason for them, that any HS coach in a state that uses the new 14-weights system would catch onto immediately): 125-133-141-149-157-165-175-190-215-285 -
