  1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Oher?wprov=sfti1 Wikipedia’s description of the events - source linked here: https://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/24/magazine/24football.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
  2. Oher was already enrolled at the private school and an all-state football player before he moved in with Tuohys. His HS coach was Hugh Freeze before Freeze was hired at Ole Miss. I suspect if they did nothing, we wouldn’t have a movie featuring them so prominently but I believe the probability of him playing in college and the NFL about the same.
  3. … and is the third person involved in the 1984 controversy with the Olympic team who often doesn’t get mentioned. I met him for the first time a few years ago down in Texas … where he was WITH Randy Lewis.
  4. Yes. it on the UWW schedule each day.
  5. I didn’t say talented people and future coaches weren’t part of those programs but Kentucky, LSU and Tennessee saw more success when they were competing in the various qualifying regionals than in the SEC, where the qualifier system at the time was limiting. The point to bring up here is how every program, no matter how big or how strong, can provide quality and dedicated mentors and coaches for the next generation of wrestlers.
  6. Alabama wasn't good. Never ranked. Never an All-American. Never finished higher than 37th at the NCAA championships. Auburn was showing promise when it was dropped in 1981. They finished 9th in 1981 with three All-Americans, including Clar Anderson who won an NCAA title two years later at Oklahoma State. Auburn was ranked in the Top 25 only three times in its history, those last two seasons. Historically, they weren't good. They had two good seasons at the end.
  7. I hate Twinkies … but I hear the word almost daily. We also don’t have them in the house.
  8. It would actually make the EIWA 18 teams …
  9. With that, the first episode of my Gray Simons series from the NWHOF has been released. https://etchedinstone.libsyn.com/gray-simons-seven-unrolling-granby
  10. Guys, you do know that some places wait until an actual contract is signed before putting out an official release. Most of the time, it’s HR and paperwork that’s the hold up.
  11. Sammy’s just a good dude. Always ready to drop a handshake, fist bump or a hug, even if you don’t know him super well. One of those guys it’s hard to root against. It’s refreshing we’ve got the whole sport (it seems) rallying around him.
  12. Pretty sure the last two years there were 12 teams, not 16.
  13. Eras and rule sets make going across those divides so difficult. I applaud the effort for sure. Also, perhaps the “best 4” is a fair metric? It’s not equal but it may be equitable in trying to get the idea of this across. Might be worth throwing against the wall …
  14. Smoked venison loin. A bit more done than the recipe called for, but bruh … this is effing delicious. wicked tender and juicy.
  15. Because the Italians have such a big influence … Let’s not confuse possible ineptitude with corruption. They’re allowed to exist differently I thought it was a bad call, but in asking some officials I know about it, they don’t seem to find it that egregious considering the last minute of the bout. Horrible way to not win - I won’t say lose here. Not every bad call we perceive is anti-American bias.
  16. Katie Hnida was NOT in the NFL. And is this an AI bot I just replied to?
  17. A number of the Texas schools had some form of wrestling, but old results show very few competed outside of Texas. It was more club competition than anything else. The formation of teams was also loose and fast prior to the determination of divisions in 1974 at the NCAA level. Tennessee entered a guy at the (IIRC) 1964 championships and they didn’t even have a team. These instances are less of them being dropped and more of the coach who organized the team left and that was it. It’s not like we have a lot of Grand Canyon and Fresno State (second time) situations where admins started a sport then bailed on it shortly thereafter.
  18. I work as an in-house chef and chauffeur for tiny humans.
