Third greatest day of the Olympics today. Breakfast with men's 1500 heats. My happy place. -
Olympic Boxing Controversy

And to clown things up even further, the IBA announced they are giving the Italian boxer a bonus of $50k. So you get nothing for winning, $50k for quitting. They must owe me $100k for not even trying. -
65kg 2nd Quarter Weak Sauce

My only counterpoint is if they wanted to have wrestler be more active at ranking series events, they would spread them around instead of having several in eastern Europe. What I think they actually want is to have them in their home country along with a rule that encourages attendance. -
Came across this: https://www.mmafighting.com/2024/8/1/24210841/olympic-gold-medalist-david-taylor-explains-decision-retire-competition-after-missing-out-2024-games From the article: “I’ve always said I would compete as long as I had the fire,” Taylor told MMA Fighting. “This year, that fire started to just kind of go away. I’ve achieved everything I wanted to achieve in my career. You start off and you want to be a good wrestler, then you set your goals — and I had the highest goal of being an Olympic gold medalist. Being a national champion, being a world champion, being an Olympic gold medalist, it’s hard to continue to recreate that fire every single year. I was 33 years old. I had achieved everything I wanted to achieve. I got a young family, so this year was a challenge to find that fire everyday.”

According to The Athletic Khelif's DQ occurred after she had won the semi match and was in the final. Lin's DQ occurred after she had lost the semi match and had clinched a bronze. -
Olympics: men boxing cs women?

While the Russian head of the Russian state-supported IBA made that statement to the Russian state news agency back in March, notably IBA has now walked that claim back. Instead they say what the test was not, and do not confirm what the test was or the specific results. The decision to suspend the boxers was made after the semi-finals of the tournament. When was the test administered? A genetic test is not an overnight process. -

Which person? There are two involved. I rely heavily on The Athletic and ESPN for these types of stories as they adhere to journalistic standards of research and verification. They do not make any claim about chromosomes. And neither does the IBA, who kicked this whole thing off. What interweb sources are you relying on? -

Ledecky takes care of business this morning by earning the top seed for the 800 final with a relatively pedestrian time. While she is a big favorite this will still be a tough final. The men continue to under-perform. Josh Heilman goes over a second slower than his trials time in the 100 fly and doesn't even make the semis. Oof. -
Which US men's FS has the best shot to medal?

In international wrestling seeds are the equivalent of a perfect attendance award in grade school. They have nothing to do with who is best. -

So many horrifically bad takes from @jross in this thread. You have zero basis to claim either of these boxers is XY, yet you insist you do know this. I am not sure what has tipped you to irrational, but that is what you are being by insisting you know something you can not possibly know. As for the IBA, in addition to the head of the organization being Russian, and the organization being funded by the Russia state owned energy company Gazprom, the decision to suspend was taken by the Secretary General and CEO and was only ratified by the board a day later. And the suspension only came at the end of the tournament prior to their respective medal round matches. -

Yeah, Australia is just so loaded in the 200 that it was only ending one way. For the US to stay within 3 seconds was a surprise. Now we still have a Ledecky 800 and Finke 1500 to look forward to. -
You were a tad light on details and minimizing in your Trump disclaimer so I thought I would help you out.

One other thing to keep in mind with all of this is that if a school decides to increase scholarships, up to $2.5 million of the increase can be counted toward revenue share. When calculating the increase, the school does it from the old cap, rather than how many they actually used to give out. For example, if a wrestling school used to give out 8.9 scholarships and now will decide to give out 15, the increase will be 5.1 scholarships (15-9.9) for revenue sharing offset purposes, rather than 6.1 (15-8.9). -

Wrestleknownothing replied to FD1W's topic in College Wrestling
It means any Power 5 school with a women's equestrian team will have a 50 roster limit and can give any number of scholarships up to 50. And any non-Power 5 school gets to decide if they stay on the old model and do not share revenues, or follow the new Power 5 model. NIL is not impacted by the scholarship limit / roster change decisions. -

Another interesting story is COVID. A lot of COVID going through the aquatics events....and it is fine. The latest to announce a positive test is 200 breaststroke silver medalist Zac Stubblety-Cook. ZSC is at least the eighth swimmer to test positive. And five Aussie women's water polo players tested positive. It is nice to see this being a marginal story at most. -

Yowza. The Australian women's 4x200 free team had the fastest prelim time by almost 7 seconds. And they did it without the two fastest 200 free swimmers ever, who also happen to be the gold and silver medalists in these games. They could conceivably go 8 seconds faster in the final. -
The talk about Boise State in the UVU thread got me thinking about the unseeded era* wrestlers who said to hell with the seeds, I got this. Who were the unseeded wrestlers to go undefeated at the NCAA Tournament? I am glad you asked. There were nine of these titans of optimism and over-achievement, starting with Oklahoma's David McGuire in 1967 and ending with Oklahoma State's Mark Branch in 1994. These wrestlers were all participating in 8 and 12 seed tournaments. The 16 seed era was very short, lasting only five years, and did not produce any unseeded champions. The "We Don't Need No Stinkin' Badges" (or Seeds) Banditos: But what of the teams? Which teams consistently produced from the unseeded portion of the bracket? We can answer the question at least two ways. Based on sheer volume, Oklahoma put a whopping 30 wrestlers on the podium without the benefit of a seed. Iowa State, Iowa and Oklahoma State round out our top four. But they are also four of the programs with the most wrestlers in the tournament (sorry PSU fans, but they just failed at putting US on the podium. I blame Cael Sanderson in spite of the obvious objection). The Seeds Don't Matter Schools: The other (better?) way to look at this is based on rate. How often did a school/coach get their guys over the psychological hump of being told you do not deserve a seed? The Han Solo "Never Tell Me The Odds" Schools: How fitting that a faith-based school sits atop the list. Maybe I should rename it The George Michael "You Gotta Have Faith" Schools? * I am defining the unseeded era as 1967 - 2018. In 1967 we had 8 seeded wrestlers for the first time and in 2018 we had unseeded wrestlers for the last time.
