People getting lake effect snow in Bradford PA get more snow than those in Philadelphia. Is this what you are telling me? No shit.

Now you have me not being alive in 1978 based on a msg. board post? Lmao.

You must be one of “those” township supervisors - you know the ones we tax payers enjoy embarrassing at your public meetings.

You must not have been alive for the Blizzard of '78 because that's the one everyone who was alive compares everything else to.

If I'm remembering right, I saw photos of a string of telephone poles somewhere in Ohio -- the wires dipped down into the snow in-between the poles.

I lived in St. Louis at the time.  We had ice storms where the freezing rain came down almost sideways.  More than once I came off a night shift at work, had 3/4 of an inch of ice on the driver's side of my car and nothing on the other side.  I had to tap ice with a crowbar to crack it to get it off the windshield and make the vehicle driveable.  Major roads were solid ice; the city ran out of road salt and the barges carrying more were frozen into the Mississippi.

The previous winter was the deep-freeze year.  One night it hit 17 below in downtown St. L.  Some days it didn't get above zero.  On my birthday in mid-January it seemed warm because it was sunny and for once the wind wasn't howling; then I found out it was 10 below at noontime.

Ah, the good old days.

You look it up and list it. I got things to do today.

Sorry I may be busy today putting my "east coast" snow ski property on the market.  10" of fresh snow expected today!

That year was crazy. I never lost power in my old house, but plenty of my extended family close by would lose heat for days on end and my wife and I would take them in.

My wife parked her car at the train station one day, shut the door, and the car slid backwards on the ice about 100 feet into a snow bank. Lucky it did not hit anything.

Pretty sure it was my Fr year in HS.  Parents were gone on a trip for a week. Two other brothers and I responsible for feeding the cattle.  Got hit with a snow/ice storm no electricity for a week.  Had plenty of frozen food in freezer but our oven etc was electric.  Grandparents were ~5 miles away on dirt roads, they had gas oven and heat.  They couldn't get to us but we could get to them via tractor, had one with cab that was nice.  But we had to go back home to feed cattle twice a day ... the cattle always come first.

Didn't know we were talking to one of the Rockefellers with a cab tractor.

1953 Ford Jubilee named "Henry" with a homemade plow on the front couldn't keep up.

That's what my grandfather had and what I learned to drive on prob ~7/8 yr old.  But it wasn't making the 5 mi thru the snow to our house.  We had two JD 4010s (no cab) but had recently traded one for a 4020 with cab ... yep big time!

I learned to drive on a WWII surplus WillyS jeep.   I had to drive to pull the hay wagon as I wasn't big enough to lift the bales.  Someone would stand outside and push the clutch so I could get it in first gear and I doubt anyone could stall one once it was going in first.

My best friend (born same day as me) ~4 mile down the road the other direction dad had one.  We'd take it thru the pasture dirt road from his house to go fishing, hunting etc. we were prob ~12 then both learned better driving skills (not just tractor) on the Willys.  It was a lot of fun.

I lived in the Southern tier of NY at the time.  People had to take turns sleeping because you had to keep shoveling out in front of a door or it would get snowed in.   The Blizzard hit in late January then a separate storm, a nor'easter hit a few days later.   I think overall we had somewhere around 8' of snow.

Cornell in 1978.  We had 100" that season.

Yesterday they cancelled all classes for today.  It's -18 freedoms and -38 freedoms wind chill right now in Madison.

My daughter went to Wisconsin Madison, and I laughed a week ago when a parent in a FB group asked if the school ever cancels classes due to cold.  Yeah, right.

Has Cornell ever cancelled for snow or cold?

Not when I was there.  One February it was below zero nearly every day, IIRC.  No idea what
they do now.  They know how to handle it, and they are faced with such conditions all the time.

Cornell Daily Sun (yes, that was a longstanding joke) reported in 2020

The University canceled classes due to snow for the first time since 1993 in March 2017. Cornell saw another snow day in March 2018 after forecasts predicted Ithaca would receive at least six inches of snow. Most recently, the University had two snowdays during the 2019 to 2020 academic year.

In 1971 Cornell and Syracuse were unable to attend the EIWA Championships at Navy due to a blizzard.

Warmed up to 18 below(f) to day and will be 30 below tonight. Wish we could get some of the snow you guys keep talking about.

Local elementary school does take the cold into consideration as they suspend outside Recess when the wind chill is colder than 20 below zero.(f)
