Bari Weiss asked ‘60 Minutes’ senior staffers why the country thinks they’re biased: report

ari Weiss startled “60 Minutes” staffers during a private meeting last week by asking why Americans view the show as biased — another sign of the new CBS News chief’s aggressive approach to reshaping the network, according to a report.

Weiss “surprised senior staff … when she asked a provocative question: Why does the country think you’re biased?” the New York Times reported on Sunday, citing three people who attended the Midtown Manhattan session.

The exchange was met with “stunned awkwardness,” the paper said.

The question came less than two weeks into Weiss’ tenure as editor in chief — and underscored the upheaval inside the nation’s most-watched newsmagazine as hundreds of CBS News employees gauge their new boss’s unorthodox style.

Weiss, 41, has never worked in television. The outspoken founder of the Free Press — a digital outlet bought this month by CBS parent Paramount Skydance for about $150 million — has been tasked by billionaire owner David Ellison with making the network “rigorous” and “fact-based.”

The question, "Why does the country think you’re biased?" is a very simple question.   There are polls that show this.   There are ratings that show this with fewer people tuning in.  It is just incredible.

The article states that Weiss does not report to CBS news president, but to Ellison directly.   The owner is speaking and Bari has a track record of old school mostly neutral reporting.

Did she also ask this question at The Free Press?  Since The Free Press is no less biased than CBS News just in the opposite direction it would be relevant.

Also wasn’t Weiss formerly an opinion writer at the New York Times?  Opinion writers aren’t exactly known for “old school mostly neutral reporting.”  No one reads an opinion column for neutral reporting.

This media bias chart produced by Ad Fontes Media shows The Free Press as more biased to the right than CBS News is to the left and far less reliable.  Maybe the thinking is they bring on someone with right bias and things will average out on the center.  Or maybe it’s a ratings play to grab viewers from Fox who from their vantage point see The Free Press as the center and CBS News as highly partisan.  Either way it’s an odd choice with a stated outcome that is “rigorous” and “fact based.”

At least you and most of the public realize that CBS news is biased.   When confronted with this from Bari Weiss, they were aghast and confused and it was awkward because they do not think they are biased.

There is another bias chart that shows one is the same as the other on opposite sides.

In any event, the issue isn't Bari Weiss or free press, it is CBS news room totally oblivious to the fact that most people find them biased.  That was just not computing for them.

The question she asked was legitimate REGARDLESS of any ad hominen attacks about her background.   She did not even accuse them of being biased.  Her question was "Why does the country think you are biased?"  And the staffers could have answered, "Because the public is stupid" or "Because we are" or anything in between.  And then presented facts, logical constructive arguments, data, etc. to prove their respective points.  Kind of like reporters are supposed to do.

Dude, Focus on the topic and the point.  Not whether the person asking the question prefers Chick-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby to Starbucks and Ben and Jerry's.

The topic of this thread was Weiss's question and the staff's reaction.  The person asking the question is relevant to the to the staff's reaction to it.  Two different people could ask the same question and have it be received entirely differently.  In this case it was a new boss that could be seen as either unqualified or a bad fit for the position.  So my comments on her background, which I wouldn't classify as an attack, were relevant.  An irrelevant a hominem attack would be if the staff responded to her question with an attack on her background, or I responded to mspart's topic by attacking him, neither of which happened.  See Pam Bondi's recent testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee for an example of responding to legitimate questions with irrelevant ad hominem attacks.

My larger point is that in 2025 no news outlet enjoys the trust of a majority of Americans.  This question could legitimately be asked of the staff any major news outlet.  What exactly is the expected response given the context?  It was likely intended as a provocative question by the new boss.  Stunned should not outside the range of expected responses.  It isn't really an indictment of the CBS News staff the way some are interpreting it.

Imagine Jeffrey Goldberg is appointed Editor-in-Chief of Fox News and new in the job he calls a meeting with the staff of Fox and Friends and asks "Why does the country think you are biased?"  Do you think instead of stunned awkwardness the discussion immediately goes into logical constructive arguments with facts and data?

The sad fact that they didn’t understand why the question was being asked, and then reacted the way they did proves they need some self evaluation.  Every media outlet should be asking themselves that very question.   More importantly they should answer it
