Diatta gets the first takedown.

... and paid the price for it.

Pool system at the time. You could continue on after getting the tech if you wanted to try to get the pin for classification points (5 vs. 4) ... Saitiev had no intention of pinning this poor soul.

Insert catchy tagline here.

I was an athlete escort at those championships and walked out the Sengal for that match.  What's hard to see in the video is the smirk Satiev gave to his corner as he walked back to take par terre.  My thought was.......oh shit.     But even then I wasn't expecting 34 points.

Would be interesting to know what really happened to Saitiev. Even on his Wikipedia page the official word is he was sick and in and out of the hospital but his wife and witnesses claimed he fell out of a window?  Such a damn shame either way.  My favorite wrestler ever.

I was there that night for that match. That world championships was great. Iranians well represented in the stands, Cormier shoving dudes, Cael Sajidov, Cuban studs.  MSG.  Loved it.

He was incredible to watch.   A real master.   His final in 1996 when he was just a lad was a master class.   He just got better and better.

That's right, my bad.  I will crawl back into my little hole now  (For some reason I keep thinking he beat him in Atlanta)

No, Buvaiser soundly defeated Kenny Monday 6-1 in the semis in 1996.    The next American he faced was Slay in 2000.   Slay did beat him but it was a crazy match that should not have been so close but Slay blocked and blocked and lost to Slay 4-3.  Saitiev only lost one other match in 2006 WCs, 3-0, 2-2, 1-1 to Mihail Ganev of Bulgaria.   Both lost matches were very close and showed he was not insurmountable, it just had to be with the right combination and stars aligning and all that.

Interestingly, the only other American he faced was Joe Williams who lost to Saitiev 5-4.
