You're the AD: give the bag to a coach or a wrestler? 💰💰💰

With all the NIL talk going around these days, here's a little bit of a chicken-or-egg (but maybe not) hypothetical for you all:

Imagine that you're AD of a D1 program that is NOT one of the wrestling blue-bloods or traditional AA factories. A deep-pocketed donor wants the school to be the next PSU/Iowa/OSU/etc. and has earmarked a large sum of money that could be used to pay for a world-class coaching staff for 4 years, or fund the NIL/salary of a generational athlete for 4 years.

Assume we're talking best-of-the-best here, like bringing on a coaching legend like Gable or a superstar wrestler with the high potential to be a 4xer and break Cael's NCAA record. Transformational talent along those lines. Also assume that the pay is high enough to lock-in the coach or the phenom wrestler and prevent them from being poached.

Which do you choose, and why?

Alternate and in-between answers are also fine, like

  • Spending the money to hire a mid coach and pay a pretty good, but not great lineup of wrestlers, with a chance of finishing the season with 10 mid/low-AAs (idk...)
  • Dumping the money into the construction of the world's best wrestling facilities (zzz...)
  • Putting the money into a long-term interest-bearing investment account specifically for wrestling (smart long game, but zzz...)
  • Buying a bot farm to hype your janky team and spread disinformation about the competition (I like the potential...)
  • Hiring a fleet of bulldozers to raze PSU and OSU's wrestling rooms (possibly the correct answer)

I'm paying the coach.  History has proven this is the correct bet.  Kids still want to wrestle for the highest profile name.  Also have to factor in the ever changing rules on NIL.  Get the right coach and the rest will fall into place.

Until the NIL Go rules are clear (there will inevitably be more litigation), I spend the money on coaches and facilities. Facilities are there to stay and coaches can be tied down with contracts. But if pay-to-play returns (and I think it will) then I drop facilities from the equation and give that chunk to athletes.

How do you break Cael's record?

Yes. By all means, tell the commoners...:classic_dry:

A "commoner," MPhillips comes from a British military family and served in the Army (hence the Captain).

You're still a Captain even if it's a common one.

The landscape is changing.  Under pay-for-play an AD might be better served by looking at what has worked for their professionals counterparts (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, and Soccer GMs) that achieved a high level of success rather than past NCAA dynasties.  Considering how the national title is decided in wrestling a few great individuals can make an outsized difference.  Analysts call the NBA a players' league because 3-4 superstars can win a title and, as such, a single superstar player wields great bargaining power - far more than any coach.  The impact of a single wrestler can have on the team standings at NCAAs points to it being a players' league too.

Well....

Ok St threw money at the coach and got the wrestlers....

Iowa threw money at the wrestler and he decommited and is likely going to the aforementioned team...

I'm going with coach.

It would seem you would have to wrestle more matches and not lose.

They don't wrestle that many matches now days so I'll ask again:  how do you break Cael's record?

The thing is that the only teams with money to throw are throwing it at both coaches and wrestlers.  OSU has some of the highest paid coaches and wrestlers.  Same story at Iowa and PSU.  The question is if you only have room in the budget for one.  Would David Taylor be getting the top recruits at OSU if he was given a shoestring budget for wrestler acquisition?

Fair point. As the AD I would put a lot of thought into snagging a young assistant with some star power.  Someone like a Nolf.

Oof your packing on the winter weight during summer?  Maybe a bike ride up to Cottonwood Pass

Its just what an esteemed poster on here call summer fat.  Biked down and back up for pickleball today but stopped for milk and cheese ... does that count?

I wouldn't know. My Captain, @MPhillips, recruited me into the commoners club
