It was closed because it was extremely expensive to operate due to its isolated location.

Dumb to reopen it. The wingers are obsessed with DOGE but then want to waste money on a ridiculously expensive prison.

Just more winger hypocrisy and lack of common sense...a dime a dozen.

I’m a fan of this idea if, IF, it is truly feasible.  The financial side of it is very tricky, and you have to weigh the costs with the benefit.  I hope analyzing and executing this falls in the hands of really smart and stern people, and not just ‘yes men’.

So wouldn't it be cheaper to send em to El Salvador?  🤔

I'm a little surprised that the Max capacity is only 336 inmates. I would think they could easily double that with bunk beds. I thought Alcatraz was much larger.

Idiotic. They'd have to tear it down and rebuild most of it. The last time I was there 6 years ago it was in bad shape, almost not even worth visiting because so much of it was fenced off or blocked off. It would cost a lot of money, probably upwards of a billion dollars to rebuild it to the standard it needs to be.

You could have the detainees do the work to rebuild it. It doesn't have to be a Hilton Inn.

That was my first thought.

That isn't going to save the cost. Also that would be illegal to do. Unless you want to roll back the 13th amendment.

We could pass the 28th Amendment to allow illegals being detained, can work to help pay for their food and lodging. We could also call it vocational rehab training so they will have a trade when they are released in their original country.

The main expense is having to ship everything to the island, including all the workers on a daily basis. The cost is ridiculous. Wingers only care about cost though when a Democrat proposes it. Hypocrisy at its finest.
