Maybe I’m arguing the wrong point but it’s the guys who aren’t short for the weight class and still jacked that baffle me. Palmer in OP is one thing. The guy on that team that had hollow bones or something was Bo Jordan.

Yes true there are big tall guys also.

Lots of different reasons:

1. Kids cutting less, a little more body fat. 2. Quality of food lower 3. Kids wrestle more both competitively and in training, this leaves less of a bulking strength phase 4. Less bodybuilding lifting, more functional now. Smarter training. 5. Testosterone levels naturally lower in males now.

More muscle mass requires more O2. You can wrestle weaker but not without oxygen. Weight cuts were more common than weight management. That leads to lower hydration, which would cause muscles to appear larger (bodybuilders are known to dehydrate before a show). More focus on winning with skills and not just brute force.

I don't know where you are from, but I see far more shoulder braces than knee braces. The defense of stopping the shot and going behind or reattacking has led to guys holding on to a leg, and getting extended are the injuries I see most.

The weight management system also makes it hard to lose weight as quickly as in the past. Reasons mentioned already  I agree with. Olympic-style lifts have become the main lifting program in most high schools and possibly colleges as well. It replaced the curl, bench, and shoulder workouts of the 90s.

That's pretty interesting. I can see how Olympic-style lifts are likely better for explosiveness, muscle endurance, and injury prevention and probably a bunch of other stuff I'm not aware of. It's a bit of a shift for me after having strength coaches focus on specific traditional exercises over and over for the benefit of wrestling.

Banach vs Schultz.

Also, imagine the beating Keck, Starocci or Brooks would put on these guys at 184.

Those guys were naturally jacked. I remember a story about how Schultz was shocked at how successful he was as a wrestler because he had mediocre VO2 lung capacity scores. Personally I always whipped up on the jacked guys, they were never as quick as I was (and rarely as strong, actually), it was the tall lean guys like Hamiti that gave me problems, provided they were as strong as mules and had good technique.

Of course all wrestlers know guys don't have to be jacked to be uberstrong. Bo Nickal never looked that strong, but he routinely threw guys around like that gorilla in the suitcase commercial.

We must harken back to the olden days of coconut pecs and bowling ball shoulders.

Grateful to have a strong representative in the Pec Department, Luka Wick.
