Paul158 Posted March 28 Posted March 28 In Football the top 5 teams are paying out over 20 million dollars in NIL money, that doesn't include the money from outside sources. Does anyone have the amount of money the top 6 wrestling are paying out in NIL money. Maybe you can include the money from outside sources. ... ........This is getting to be the Wild West on steroids. Why aren't buyouts required if another team wants to grab a wrestler that is already at another school. It seems that the NCAA forgot to put to some guard rails in place to prevent this from happening.
Paul158 Posted March 28 Author Posted March 28 But instead of guns they are using brief cases full of money. 5 years ago, you couldn't take a meal, 10-dollar bill or free t-shirt without violating NCAA rules. 2

Remember the violation for sleeping on someone's couch? Or how about a coach driving a player to his grandfather's funeral... good times. 1
Interviewed_at_Weehawken Posted March 28 Posted March 28 The problem is that the courts seem to be repeatedly ruling in favor of "athletes rights." "Athletes rights" are not conducive to parity. The NCAA and most member schools preferred the old way, but there is not much that can be done at this point... 3

Why not a buyout clause for the school who is losing the wrestler. I would say 1 million dollars for a 5 star, 800K for a 4 star, etc. etc. They might slow some of this down. But the old way (which did not bring parity) was wildly unfair to athletes. May take a while for NCAA, teams, and programs to figure out how to navigate. Of course, the real $$ is in football and hoops and not in wrestling and we are at most the tail of the football/hoops NIL dog. Edited March 28 by Elevator 1

It would likely be looked at a sneaky way to infringe upon athlete's earning potential.

Since we are now talking about professional athletes now, why couldn't you have the athlete sign a 5- year contract? which would include a buyout in the event of them going to another school. This is done in most professional sports.

There are some rules around them, but these probably vary based on state and institutional interpretations and legislation. I'm just not sure how something like you are suggesting would be worked out.
Tigerfan Posted March 28 Posted March 28 I knew of a female athlete at Mizzou who got in trouble for washing her car with the hose outside Hearnes arena. Didn’t pay for the water. 1 1

I know in football they put their names on Jerseys and on all types of merchandise that the school sells. I know Ohio State sells close to 200million dollars' worth of athletic related merchandise each year. Edited March 28 by Paul158 missed a word

Lordnelson Posted March 28 Posted March 28 The NCAA can be trusted to do no such thing. They are as corrupt a group of bureaucrats possible. The best idea on this thread is to treat them like pros, because that is what they are, sign contracts and let the free market run the sport. Currently, the mafia is winning. Those that have will, those that don't will be railroaded and falter. 1
Jimmy Cinnabon Posted March 28 Posted March 28 When was it ever the NCAA's goal to ensure parity among teams?

And everyone hated that, and screamed and screamed that the colleges and NCAA were making all this money of the backs of their performances in their competitions. So the chains were unlocked. And now it’s as fundamental as America itself. Free market. Individual Liberty.
Idaho Posted March 28 Posted March 28 NCAA athletes have wanted to be treated like pros through all of this... get paid, unionize, etc. If that is the route, then the NCAA should be able to act as the NFL in this scenario and enact things similar to rookie contracts, salary caps and competitive balance. 2 Sponsored by INTERMAT

The NFL and the NCAA is zero comparison. The NFL has 32 programs. None of their staff are state employees. And on and on…

Fans have complained for years that the NCAA should take a lighter touch and cede more autonomy to athletes and conferences. This is what college sports under a free market looks like.

NFL has a federal antitrust exemption. NCAA does not.
alex1fly Posted March 28 Posted March 28 It has to change. Especially for public universities... everything is public record EXCEPT how much private companies are paying athletes? It's truly bananas. NIL was "name image and likeness" for about 4 days lol 1

The pro athlete has to sign a contract and abide by the contract. Right now, the Pro college athlete doesn't have to sign a contract. That just seems illogical to me. 1
