I'm going with one that hasn't been brought up yet: Adam Coon.

The Coon is a good one.  Olympian, world silver in greco, and made Final X in both styles.

Another greco guy that hasn't been mentioned.  Rulon Gardner.

I had no idea Gardner had wrestled in college. Fourth in 1993. Nice.

This is my answer all day, every day. It's more of an aesthetic appreciation than anything else: brutal with that bar arm-far half/blair ride on top and the cross ankle pick / shrug on his feet (in addition to the flashy inside trips from space and super ducks). All the tactics seemed a fluid realization of a single strategy (reminds me of Devin Carter running all his action through the bundle situation)

Edit: plus some former opponents confided that he was kinda a d!ck. This is a plus in my book. I reject the "wrestling is fun" mantra . . . even though it seems to work miracles. I'm waiting for the pendulum to swing back, and for the kids damaged by broken homes, poverty, and such to unleash their rage on the well-adjusted.

He isn't just a fan. He is a legend.

lol, I guess you told me, huh. Didn’t know asking him a question gets a response from you.

No, I am literally saying he is a legend. Look him up.

For what? I merely complimented the guy for his obvious dedication to our sport and you felt the need to jump in. Listen wrestle - stick to crunching numbers, the tough guy schtick doesn’t work for you.

Jamil Kelley maybe number one of the list of the greatest NCAA wrestlers never to have AA'd

My kids were lucky enough to have Jamill stop by their youth team practice and go through a couple of moves!  Really nice guy and generous with his time, giving back to the community

reading back through this thread and connecting the dots - kind of wild that Lindland and Rulon Gardner were on same Nebraska team. Greco studs

That team was great.  3rd at NCAA with 6 AAs and 1 national champ. 2nd at the national duals.  4 guys wrestled in the All Star match including Lindland who won his match.

Oh, there's a bunch of dudes who are/were great wrestlers that never won NCAAs. Here's a few that come to mind:

  • James Green (7,7,3,3)
  • Thomas Gilman (2,3)
  • Townsend Saunders (2,3) *NOTE* Did win an NCAA DIV II title so not sure if he can go on this list. What the hell, let's give it to him!
  • Ken Chertow (3,3) - I'm sorta on the fence with him
  • Russ Hellickson - I don't remember him doing much in college. Decent freestyle career - got picked on by the Russians but who didn't!
  • @fishbane already mentioned Bobby Weaver and I'm 100% on board with that. I remember he lost to Gene Mills in college once but no shame in that

Chertow also placed 6th. That year he lost in OT to Cuvo in semis and did the slide. Cuvo won his 2nd title that year.

Same tournament, Saunders lost on criteria in finals to Santoro who won his 2nd title that year.
