Looks alittle weathered too right? Sort of leathery before his time.

Lee never threatened Ono.  Couldn't get to his legs or break the head-hands defense.  If you can keep Lee from scoring in the first period, you have a good chance to winning against him.  He's not known for his gas tank.  It will be interesting to see if Ono goes to 57 KG.

I'm curious how Blaze might fair against Lee.  RBY kept it reasonably close recently.

Carr, I guess, was tonight's U.S. star.

Bo Nickal is an ego maniac.

WTF is he doing in Iowa coaching a guy who can't understand a word he's saying? Guy needs attention

Man, I’m bummed. Well Spencer has to get to work no doubt about it. Carr on the other hand was really good.

Get Ono at 57k and we'll see how that goes.

I'm not particularly interested in defending Nickal, but Ono has been training at Penn State for 2 or 3 months, particularly with Zain Retherford, Jordan Conaway, and Cody Sanderson.  Nickal has his MMA facility there and so I'm sure he is in the room alot.  He also probably just enjoys taunting the Iowa faithful.

Random thoughts:  Spencer looked huge compared to Ono, but Ono just too fast.  He did give Ono his closest match of the past year though.  Carr did a nice job but exhausted at the end.  Japan's sportsmanship is 10/10.  Bassett is annoyingly well-spoken and likable.  Frustrating to not see Bryce pull the trigger.  Gross is just a bad matchup for DeSanto, but I respect how much DeSanto has matured.  Flo's videos leading up to the event were awesome, and it looks like they really filled the arena, which is great too. Thanks for doing this Flo.

Thats all true and I don't think it constitutes defending him. He's still just there because he wants eyeballs on him.

Grateful that this event was put on.

Lee recognized he needed to to do something different, and he went as hard as he could in a couple movements.

The bigger, technically sound, wrestler won tonight.

Why is bo nickel wasting time wrestling all the time folkstyle and cornering Japanese dudes. He should be delegating all that energy in mma

I think it's cool.  Ono didn't bring a coach and I'm glad PSU provided a couple of their best, who probably weren't getting paid.  It's the decent thing to do, and it would've been seriously messed up if Ono was just there on his own, without a corner guy. Admittedly, Bo may have been in it more to beat the Iowa guy than to help Ono, but he and Zain did their jobs, and it's not like they were calling attention to themselves.

This was a nice event, well packaged and presented by Flo, putting aside Bader, who does great work in the documentaries but just isn't good at announcing at live events.

Gross and Gomez - terrific wrestling.

Carr - he is really, really good and knows how to win big matches vs top opponents, tonight reminded me a little of the Mesenbrink final.  I'd love to have his future and wonder what Dake is thinking.

Lee - don't know what to think.  Up five pounds, which is a lot at his size, he lost by only one point to maybe the hottest wrestler in the world.  But Ono did control the match and it didn't look like Lee could have taken him down if they wrestled all night.  I'd be curious what others thought, but it looked to me like Lee made a mental mistake on the third pushout, it looked like he was grounded near the edge and then chose to come off his knees, exposing himself to the risk (although he might have been thinking he had to because of the way the ref called that prior one).

Last thought - boy, is folkstyle king in the U.S., the amount of traffic on this and the Iowa board for these high level, well promoted matches was tiny compared to even a solid top 10 college dual meet.
