Real question: do Flo rankings have a discernible or tangible influence over actual seedings? If not, fine; then they're content for the fans and a topic for debate on message boards. I agree with the OP though: I can't quite get my head around Block at 18. Even 125 for the Hawks is showing some glimmers of hope--141 not so much.

I know intermat's rankings are used for seeding purposes at both the Scholastic and Collegiate level.  I cannot think of an instance where Flo's is used.

For the Coaches rank…

Not in an official manner for seeding purposes, though.

If coaches use Flo's to make their own, that is laziness.

Well to pick on intermat at the same weight, they currently have Chris Cannon #33 at 141.  He is 1-5 with his only win against someone from Northern Illinois that is redshirting.  He hasn’t beaten a D1 starter since 2023, down a weight.

In Cannon's defense he has a history, being a 2x all-American.  In Block's case he is 2-4 for his career and missed all of last year.

That’s not the same guy.  This version of Chris Cannon got pinned by a guy who is 2-4 this year and 5-14 for his career

Oh, I agree. Just saying the history justifies some respect, unlike a freshman who's 2-4.  Gophers went through the same thing with Brayton Lee 2 years ago.

Block doesn’t have any signature wins, but while on the surface some of his losses look bad (especially if going by wrestlestat ratings), if you dig in they’re really not.  He’s lost to #1, #16, then Zach Redding and Aden Valencia.   Redding has been a backup the past 2 years, this season he’s 1-2 with his losses being to #7 Koderhandt and Aden Valencia, but even last year as a backup he had a win over the current #17 at 149.   Block and Redding are Valencia’s only 2 wins, but his only 2 losses are to #5 Happel and #11 Lemley.

So TBH, on the “eye test,” there’a a good chance Block probably is around the 20-25th best guy.  He just hasn’t earned it yet

Eye test isn't part of the oather's creed.  Results are.  How often have they said as much in defense on various Flo shows?

Totally agree that’s why the ranking is wrong.  But I was also alluding to Cannon as well, he should not be ranked  either

@Jon_Kozak

This one has me confused.

Ryder Block entered the 141 rankings at #26 on Dec. 9 after going 2-2 with a win over never ranked David Mayora and a win over never previously ranked Nash Singleton (Singleton entered the same week at #27). Block has wrestled twice since against higher ranked wrestlers and lost them both.

Singleton has lost to many unranked wrestlers since (and beat #33) causing him to drop from Flo's rankings.

But somehow Block has gone 0-2 and jumped 8 spots to #18. It feels like the Singleton win gave him a floor of #26, even though Singleton was not ranked at the time and would quickly lose his rank.

Block has only ever wrestled 6 times in his career, has lost four of those, but keeps moving up the rankings?

Hey sorry for the delay - just checked the forums today.

Yeah, it's a bad ranking...it happens from time to time. Most times we catch it before it gets to this point but Block slipped through the cracks. You'll remember last year I had to answer for dropping Maida 18 spots and this year I have to answer for not dropping Block. It'll be fixed on Monday...unless he beats Bartlett tonight of course 🙂

That you are not on the forums all the time is cause for celebration rather than need for apology.

Thank you for the response. As always, you are a class act. Thanks for doing the rankings that we all endlessly debate.

Now that I think about it, maybe slip a crazy one in there every now and again so that we have something to go nuts about. You know, liven things up a bit around here.

lol I love the forums - I'm usually on them most days but we had a little family get away the past few days so that spared me from getting caught in the weeds of my Ryder Block error.
