What is Hawkeye report saying about Ferrari taking the mat and Arnold forfeiting?

Expand

A bunch are disappointed/annoyed they didn’t get to see it from the fan’s perspective, which I’d agree with, don’t see too much speculation about why it didn’t happen other than one guy saying maybe they wanted to ensure Ferrari stays undefeated in his career (which I’d doubt was a factor) or maybe Arnold did actually get dinged up earlier in the tournament (which would really be the only acceptable reason IMO).

It's a bad look for Iowa to forfeit two of its wrestlers in the finals of its own tournament. They expect fans to turn up and pay admission to watch forfeits?

I guarantee you these guys want to wrestle and aren't so fragile about losing "in front of the country for no reason." They're both studs who've put it on the line over and over and aren't afraid of doing so again.

They forfeited just to make me look dumb. Bastards!

Brands implies they’re not decided yet.

I’m assuming no one asked him why did Ferrari wrestle attached?

Expand

Yeah, Brands says they haven't decided yet, but then Brands gives away the store later in the interview when he says "we got some really good guys there, so it's not like one guy is head and shoulders above the other guy, so it's like, what do you do, do you take him out of redshirt... it's not like that."

Translation:  Ferrari is beating Arnold but it isn't by much, so Ferrari is staying in redshirt.

Interpretation:  It would be harmful to Iowa's image of being a meritocracy if he allowed them to wrestle, since he thinks Ferrari would win, and doesn't want the fallout when they still keep him in redshirt.  It's quite a change from what Brands was saying to the media just a few days ago.

The inconsistency isn't a good look for Iowa.  My guess is if I'm Arnold, I'm feeling a distinct lack of confidence of the coaches in me, but if I'm Ferrari, I'm not appreciating that the coaches keep raising the bar on what I need to do to break into the lineup.

Sorry, I should have clarified better. There is no reason to have Arnold and Ferrari wrestle in the finals unless the spot is on the line, and you are going to pull Ferrari's RS if he wins. Otherwise you just had your starter in Arnold go out and lose to the guy in RS in front of the country for no reason. The match in itself obviously doesn't burn the RS, but I don't understand why you wrestle it unless the spot is on the line.

I felt similarly when tOSU had Davino and Bouzakis wrestle earlier this season. I don't see anyway that match was beneficial for Bouzakis this season. He took a pointless loss.

But couldn't either of those guys still redshirt at this point? If Ferrari is better I'd start him and RS Arnold just out of greed for NCAA team points if I was Tom Brands.

Arnold cannot RS. He was a RS last year and this season is a year of eligibility whether he is the starter or not.

I'm glad we're getting free of the covid era where everyone has at least one more year no matter what....

Can Ferrari still redshirt? Why did he wrestle attached?

My bad. I thought he was a HS kid last year.

They could do the Penn State “medical” redshirt like Nagao and possibly Facundo are doing.

Perhaps there is some 3D chess grand strategy reason that we are all missing, but lest we forget administrative details have not seemed to be the program's strong point of late (see Teske, Brody and Teske, Brody).

I’d agree with this translation.  Which still means it makes no sense that Ferrari would wrestle attached at Soldier Salute.  I guess maybe they plan to use Arnold for most of the remainder of the season but still don’t know why they wouldn’t have just preserved the date by having Ferrari wrestle unattached.

Yes, I believe he still has 2 more dates he can wrestle in and still preserve his redshirt.   But the second one is a great question…

He has 5 free dates correct?  Maybe you can't go unattached as a Fr when you have the 5 dates?

Its aggravating because the chess board is informed largely by hidden factors, which also happen to be the interesting ones.....

Another question, Is there anyway Iowa wants to keep both of these guys? Could Arnold be headed down and Iowa is trying to keep a lid on it?

That only applies to first semester. Second semester the option to wrestle unattached exists.

Good info but he still had free dates so prob doesn't matter as long as saves one for OSU dual.
