Getting closer but still no cigar.

Quote

After a twelfth round of voting, the House failed once again to elect a speaker.

The vote totals for the twelfth round:

  • Kevin McCarthy – 213
  • Hakeem Jeffries – 211
  • Jim Jordan – 4
  • Kevin Hern – 3
  • Other – 0
  • Present – 0

But the good news for McCarthy is that he appears to have flipped 14 of the holdouts.

However, there were also two McCarthy supporters who were absent for today’s vote. One Democrat was also absent.

On future ballots, assuming all of his backers are present, he will need to flip three of the remaining holdouts to be come speaker. They are: Biggs, Boebert, Crane, Gaetz, Good, Harris and Rosendale.

He can win with fewer votes if he can get some of the seven “no” votes to vote present.

1. It’s Not About Kevin

At some point, the House will name a speaker. Maybe today. Maybe over the weekend. Maybe next week. Maybe two weeks from now.

That speaker might be Kevin McCarthy. Or Steve Scalise. Or someone else.

At that point, a bunch of people will say, “Phew. We got it done. Let’s move on.”

And here is the essential, foundational problem: This fight over the speaker’s gavel is exactly what every important vote in the House over the next two years is going to look like.

The speaker’s fight is the debt ceiling fight is the budget fight is the Ukraine aid fight.

Meaning: One half of the federal legislature will be mostly non-functional for the next two years.

And that’s why the Speaker McCarthy stuff is so important. Not because it’s the main event, but because it’s the template.

Rumor is that McCarthy has offered each Freedom caucus member a free punch to his face, but Gaetz is demanding he get a swift kick to McCarthy's dick before considering flipping.  McCarthy has taken this under consideration.

Objection! Hearsay!

Object in question has never been proven to exist.

You know Gaetz is holding out on a pardon for his "alleged' crimes.

Not this time.

5 against so far.

Better luck next time, Qevin.

Theoretically still possible depending on how many people vote.

As noted, I am not concerned.   Less time for them to do damage.  Plus they are not getting paid so they are feeling it.  DC is not cheap.  I'm sure they'll get retro pay so please don't worry for them.

Mike, I assume you are not a fan of the Rs.    So why does this concern you so much?   It's not like the Ds will suddenly take power here.

The House of Representatives of the United States of America is nonfunctional and you ask, "So why does this concern you so much?"

They have cultivated these dingbat candidates for decades, starting around Gingrinch's time, and now the bill is coming due.

My biggest concern today is whether it is possible to die from a schadenfreude overdose.

Rosendale votes Jordan, so this round seems definitively over.  They should probably do it again, that should do it.

David Trone D MD6 is back and voting.

That'll raise the threshold again.

OK, so really you are not concerned.   What earth shaking legislation is pending that they need to get to right away?   None.    So there is nothing to be concerned  about here.   Let them do what politicos do and make fools of themselves.   This seems like something you would applaud.

This has literally not happened in 100 years.

Something to keep in mind is that Pelosi had the exact same margin to work with and she didn't preside over a clown car of dumpster fires like this crap.
