Shut out by Sad, perhaps it's time for the Magic Man to hang up his cape?

You don't get out much do you? Don't watch much interviews or really read any USA Wrestling news huh? He has said multiple times he is done after this world championships. So, I guess the answer is...yes?

If Taylor makes the bronze medal match and Ghasempour beats him, it will be a pretty poor way to leave competitive Senior Men's Freestyle, with two losses in an abbreviated Worlds. Similar stories for JB and James Greene. My advice is GTFO of the way and let the youngsters get some experience and win some medals.

Except the youngsters couldn't beat these guys, so what makes you think they would have won a medal against guys who could?

Well, to be clear, DT is at 92kg (and coaching) because a youngster beat him.

But no youngster beat him at 92 which is why he was there and not a youngster. I assume you know that is what I was talking about, it being a thread prompted by the 92 world championship.

I'm commenting on the entire US Senior Men's Freestyle system, and it's broken. There is no continuous development of young wrestlers for international competition. Kids get into the NCAAs and focus on folkstyle. Yes, many of the young guns are very good at freestyle, but to be honest, they finish high school and get into the grind of NCAA seasons and they go nowhere in freestyle. Look at Japan; look at Ono. He's a 20-year old kid and he's focused ON FREESTYLE. He wrestles all the time and he works on FREESTYLE positions. The youngsters need experience and competition at this level. Maybe they wouldn't come home with medals, just as the old guard aren't coming home with medals. At least it would result in forward momentum for the program as a whole.

That is a very different argument than your original argument.

But the point remains, if the old guard keeps beating the younguns, then the old guard earns the spot.

These Monday morning quarterback arguments drive me crazy. Imagine holding a tournament and then NOT sending the winner to represent the US? It makes zero sense to me.

It could be worse. He gets pulled back and doesnt make the 3rd place match.

Yeah so Taylor didn't go to the Olympics.   But no one beat Taylor at 92 and Taylor went and is in the bronze medal  match.   It's who wins the trials.   If the youngins win, they go.   If the oldie goldies win, they go.   The best goes period.

I agree that whomever wins must get the spot.

Which brings into question the trials bye system favoring older incumbents rather than having them go through the grind of a tournament like they would at Worlds or the Olympics. I'm not saying that's my argument, I'm just enjoying age-old messageboard debates coming full circle.
