With all due respect to Ghasempour, I really hope we get the see DT vs the Tank. I think Taylor needs to get to his ankles. He’s built too powerfully through the middle to get through his hips. He needs to do what Takatani did to Dake. Get to his ankles and eliminate his chest lock and make him scramble in the process. A lot will come down to how the match is officiated. Will it just be the arbitrary passivity for both guys or will they really force both guys to wrestle and penalize the guy who doesn’t.

I am hoping all three will be in the same side of the bracket so we will get to see all three wrestle each other

Looks like we'll get to see the full round-robin, if Taylor can win a couple repechage matches!

I am sure Taylor will destroy everyone in his way to the match to Ghassempour

yes, the silver lining is that we will say Taylor vs Ghassempour, but I still cannot believer Ghassempour gifted the match to Sadulaev with 8 seconds left

It was painful to see.  He outwrestled Sadulaev for 5:52.  Outside those 8 seconds he's looked great all tournament.

Taylor's first repechage opponent is pretty tough, but hopefully he makes it to the bronze match.

No idea what was going through Ghasempour's head at that moment. I'm stunned. I like that the Iranian fans were calling for a fall on Sadulaev during the final scoring sequence, though 😆 Good fans.

Ghassempour had a reputation of being a smart wrestler, but now I wonder.  With 8 seconds left, all he had to do was stand there and defend if needed.  There was no upside in shooting like he did.

This was his chance to build his legacy after all his losses to Yazani for the last decade.

The problem is even if he beats Taylor, people are going to say that he won because Taylor was not near his peak.

Think how Iran feels right now with their last second brain farts at 79 and 92. We were hopeful of our retirees doing well, but it's got to sting worse to be that close and and let it slip away, twice.

Brain Fart is a very accurate way to describe it.  At least Nokhodi finally beat JB, so he has something to be happy about, but Ghassempour really F'd up

You've said this a couple times, but I dunno.  If Taylor beats Ghassempour, people will say it is because he was still reeling from his Sadulaev loss.  People who want to make excuses will always find a way to do so.

Of course it is true that Taylor's at the end of his career, and isn't at his prime.  That's just a fact.  It's also true he's giving up some weight to these guys.  But after his match with Sadulaev, one thing you haven't heard anyone say is "But Taylor would've won if this were 5 years ago."  That's because Sadulaev made it pretty clear there's a significant gap -- or at least that the stylistic matchup is very much in Sadulaev's favor.

Same should apply here. If Ghassempour squeaks out a narrow win, people can fairly wonder how they'd fare in their primes.  If it's a thumping, then its more meaningful.

Besides, if Taylor makes it to Ghassempour, it will be clear that Taylor, even if not at his prime, is not *that* far off.  He'll have to get past Abakarov, who lost only 3-1 to Sadulaev and was beating Taylor in 2021 worlds when he got pinned and came back for 3rd.  Taylor already had to beat a returning World bronze medalist at 92kg just to make the team.  No one thinks Taylor is a mere shadow of his former self.  He's still a terror and a win over him would be a nice feather in Ghassempour's cap.

On the other hand, if Old Man Taylor beats Ghassempour... 😉

All your points is valid.

There is a background that you may not be aware of.  Ever since Taylor dominated Yazdani, there has been a strong vocal group in Iran arguing that Ghassempour's style is a much better match for Taylor than Yazdani, and specially for the olympics with Yazdani's injury, there were more people arguing that Ghassempour should go instead of Yazdani.

If Ghassempour beats Taylor, specially if he does so with a margin, the "should have" and "could have" arguments will never end in Iran

Interesting.  I wasn't aware of the debate.  Could Ghassempour even make 86kg?  He's enormous.  Why not just let the two wrestle off for the spot?  Was it the injury, or just not how things are done in Iran?

He had lost in the wrestle off to yazdani on three different occasions I believe, none of them being super competitive.

edit: the three wrestle offs occurred prior to the injury this year I'm not aware what transpired with the injury situation this year.

In all honesty, the only reason Ghassempour moved up to the non olympic weight of 92, is that for many years, he could never beat Yazdani.  He was 86 for years before he moved up.

when the Yazdani came from back his injury, Ghassempour was trying out for 97, and he decided it would be too difficult to get down to 86 after bulking up for 97.

During this world championship, they said he was at 91 without losing weight, so he is definitly a natural 86.  When you look at Yazdani and Ghassempour next to each other, Yazdani looks a little bigger.

Ghassempour's shoulder look like cannonballs!
