Appears ASU is actually using their intrasquad as a wrestle off this year. All notables are wrestling, except Larkin who I believe may be injured.

Other notes - Vasquez to 149, Ruiz at 165, and Valencia to 184.

Cael Valencia isn't living up to either of his names.

He's a kid that has a lot of talent but, and this is a guess, hasn't put in the work to be a good D1 wrestler.

I won't do him dirty like that. Over on the PSU board we refer to the middle Ferrari as Fredo; Anthony Ferrari is by all accounts NOT a person you want hanging around your wrestling room.

Just strikes me as a kid who wrestled because that's what his brothers did and had a lot of success by being talented and getting in a lot of reps. Now that he's up against kids who are just as talented and/or want it a lot more, he's not having that success.

what do we see as Aziz's ceiling? can we pick a 2x JuCo natty champ over a fringe NCAA tourney guy in Cael?

I’m assuming Aziz is on top of the ladder currently (at least in the coaches eyes). Otherwise he’d have the prelim match and Cael would have the bye.

Well. There’s no Larkin or 174. See how it shakes out. But obviously you know this night is usually a huge waste of time to attend at ASU.

Very true.

I'm a huge ASU fan and I'm concerned about the program. We are laying an egg this year. Sure Larkin's gonna be helpful whenever he comes back from wherever he is (also, where's Cael Valencia?) but long term too. It appears that the Sun Devils are in descent

ASU just had top commit Ludington  NJ De-commit and open up his recruitment. Huge loss for ASU.

I would imagine the usual suspect will be on this. Iowa, tOSU, Rutgers all seemingly have plenty of money and a roster need for 197.

ASU didn't plan long term at all and now that their biggest financial backer rode off into the sunset, it's going to be really tough to compete especially in the new NIL era without somebody else who can pick up the slack. Zeke was told this could happen years ago and nobody did anything to prepare.

Valencia  wrestled last weekend at Journeymen and went 1-2 at 184. It doesn't seem he will be the starter.  Teemer and Parco leave, Schultz already takes a loss to Luffman, Vasquez looking over matched at 149....Larkin MIA... lost Ludington...been a rough couple months in Tempe.

ASU been on a downward spiral since Pendleton left.  This years cycle might be rock bottom. There should be big changes after the year.

Too bad they didn't get DT. Maybe somebody can get JB when Zeke is ready to retire. That would be the only name big enough to make a big impact.

They're finishes certainly don't reflect that. OSU was in a downward spiral last year. Recruiting cycles for schools that aren't in the big 3-5 are going to dictate up and down years.

Outside of Manville and Ruiz (and legacies) they haven’t recruited in years well at all. Can’t get any instate talent to stay. Development seems to be at a standstill throughout the room. Something isn’t working. There’s a lot of money out here in AZ and talent from wrestlers to coaches. Not sure why Zeke can’t seem to put it all together

Did they at least put some of the donations into an investment fund or something?

Not that I know of. They knew that this would happen and have a half assed answer to it, which is about as impotent as a Nevada boxing commissioner. What they should have done was listen and do whatever they had to in order to keep that going. Now the face of the program for the last decade is gone. They aren't bringing in top recruits anymore, and they can't compete in the NIL era without somebody backing the program in a big way. After this season I wouldn't be shocked if half the current starters transferred, and we're right back to where things were when Zeke took over.
