Miklus only had 27 bouts. Never had a pigtail.

  • 2015: 7 bouts to earn 7th (lost R2)
  • 2016: 6 bouts to earn 6th (lost in SF)
  • 2018: 6 bouts to earn 8th (lost QF)
  • 2019: 8 bouts to earn 6th (lost R2)

A finalist at NCAA will have five bouts.  Non-finalist All-Americans pickup extra bouts by:

  • Having a pigtail (+1)
  • Losing in the first two rounds of the tourney and make the blood round (+1)
  • Win the blood round bout (+1)
  • Wrestling the consolation semi-final (+1)

To have eight bouts in an NCAA tourney you need to make the consolation semi-final after:

  • losing a 1st or 2nd round bout, or
  • having a pigtail and losing in the QF

It's only possible to have nine bouts if place top 6, and have a pigtail AND lose in either the 1st or 2nd round.

The extra year for COVID makes it necessary to normalize by the number of tourneys.  Only guys with 4-for-4 or 5-for-5 should be eligible.  Adjusting Miklus' count and normalizing gives us the following for the list provided:

You’re right. Thanks for the correction. I fat-fingered my data entry and had his record at 6-6 one year… Still working on sanity scrubs with it.

There are few more with 27 matches over the course of 4 tournaments that could be added.

Maybe adjust for the non pigtail vs pigtail years or an * for those who got a pigtail match or two, etc.?

When were the "non-pigtail" years?  There have been championship pigtails in the 32-man bracket structure for every tourney since 1967.  The only difference today is the existing process defines a single pigtail for each 33-man bracket, as opposed to the era when qualifying tourneys selected their own national qualifiers allocated by the 5-year R12 calculation and the (back-room) "wildcard" process.

I see 2. There are a couple years without brackets on wrestlingstats so could be there. Obviously had to be early years.

I knew the 1936 Unl situation as I knew Scobey (Lehigh) only had 3 in the weight so the 3rd had to be one.

Dell Shockley- Ok St 1929 115

Gordon DuPree - Oklahoma State 1936 Unl

For current wrestlers, Dustin Plott has 17 NCAA matches wrestled and has two tournaments left to go.  Lucas Byrd has 20 with two tournaments left to go.

That's 2 of them! The other is after these 2.

He's got 20. But you are right, he has 2 years of 8 matches. One of his years was canceled by COVID.

I like to think of them as participation trophies disguised as All-American finishes. Third in a three man bracket, fourth in a four man bracket.

Well, it was a five-man bracket.  He did lose twice by what today would be a MAJ decision (12-3 and 10-2).

Good point.

So imagine you are that fifth man,  Burl Boring (I am guessing he did a lot of hand fighting and never took a shot), who goes 0-1 in the same bracket but loses out to the guy who goes 0-2 for fourth place just because that guy got two buys to Boring's one.

It's not often that a #1 seed doesn't win a match, it's only happened 12x by my count. But one year 2 of them did. What year was it and who were they?

Losing as a #1 was a death sentence when you needed to be pulled back into the consolation bracket as a result of the success of the guy who beat you.  My guess is it occurred prior to complete consolation brackets.

Everyone loves some trivia! To give this board a little different topic of discussion I'll post a new trivia question every day in this thread.

The most matches won in a single NCAA tournament is 8. Name the wrestlers who have done this.

I'm not looking down thread first, so here goes:

Epperly

McKee

Sheets?
