who are you most excited about?

and how many first-time starters do you see reaching the podium?

here's a list of the top ones i expect to start.

also - anyone have a # of average # of frosh AA's per year?

As a SDSU Jackrabbit fan, I am very excited to see Bennett Berge get a full season under his belt. I think he has the skills to make the podium.

Other new starters I am excited to watch and I think will AA: Nic Bouzakis, Meyer Shapiro, Mitchell Mesenbrink (if he goes), Dayton Pitzer, Nick Feldman

Could AA: Troy Sprately, Kannon Webster, Rylan Rogers, Dylan Fishback, Stephen Little, Ben Keuter (if no Cassiopi), Christian Carrol

i guess i could have put Keuter in there with a 'no cassioppi' disclaimer but they now sound hopeful. who knows.

i'll tell ya a couple kids i missed in the article

Caden McCrary 133 UNC should be good if he can hold the weight

John Wiley 149 OU - they listed him at 157 fo wrestle offs so i was unsure of his status.

TBD

Is McDougal better than Wiley or is Wiley to big for 149? My guy Alek Martin took out Wiley in Frost Arena last year.

I am not familiar with McCrary, will keep an eye out for him.

all i know is, after the article came out one of their coaches reached out and said John Wiley was gonna be problems.

McCrary won S32 at 138 back in 2020.

Webster - my hunch is he's redshirting but i don't know that for sure.

Does your reply mean I’m back in good graces? Like hopefully a bottom 50 innocuous post gets me a little less heat… for now?

Does this unofficially confirm Kannon Webster is redshirting?

cc @ILLINIWrestlingBlog

In the broadcast of the ILLINI/SIUE dual tonight, the announcer quoted Coach Poeta as saying that Kannon Webster "will for sure get his 5 free duals." Also, I expect Braeden Scoles will get his five, especially if he's down at 157, while Chris Moore down at 165 and others will see some action.

Also of note... thanks to Rocky Jordan... I am following the trio of RS-FR from UT-Chatt closely from 165-184.  I am curious what sort of jumps from Year 1 to Year 2 they make after having him in the room.  What sort of tricks and whatnot that he may have brought to them).

- 13W - 5L, All matches at 165

https://www.wrestlestat.com/wrestler/78495/desiante-sergio/profile
- 7W - 7L, Only two matches at 174, rest at 184.

https://www.wrestlestat.com/wrestler/79015/stein-ryan/profile
- 0W - 1L, One match up at 285 last year and now dropping to 184

With Palmer dropping to 125 I think UT-Chatt may be my Socon team to follow this year, although I am and have been a fan of Campbell for a good while (TYVM Fanco - WHERE IS HE THIS YEAR?!?!?!).

FWIW, Mekhi is wrestling Starocci at 174.

I know it was rumored he was going up but apparently not.

Do they get an allowance this year?  There was one year (forget which one) that they got a five (5) pound allowance and some of the wrestlers were pissed about it because they misunderstood.

Even so... Dustin Plott just wrestled 79 KG at U23s and is going 184lbs.  Sonny Santiago just wrestled 74 KG at U23s then weighed in at 157lbs yesterday.  Until we get ~halfway through January I am going to wear my tinfoil hat and hope he goes 184lbs.

@MNRodent @headshuck what’s the gopher consensus on Vance Vombaur? He single handily ruined my Jackrabbits chance at beating Minny last year.

He has an interesting style that can be tough to wrestle against.  The Gophers could have up to 5 redshirt sophomores that would be first year starters and have a chance to be pretty solid...Vom Baur 141, Roberts 149, Brenner 165, Nagel 197, Tabor Hwt.  Also redshirt freshman Lyden 165.  I think all true freshmen will redshirt, but Movari 125, Wells 133, Riddle 174, McEnelly 184, Nelson 197 should see some action with the 5 contest rule, and give the starter a rest.

I am hoping to see more consistency out of Carlson this year. He had a brutal course load first semester last season and I think that played a big part in his inconsistent results. Vombaur did look tough in that match against Carlson and has had some other nice wins in his career (Biscoglia, Julian Farber, Jack Wagner). Will be interesting to see what he can do as a full time starter.

I really appreciate the knowledge and insight of so many poster on this string and many others.  I have not been able to keep up and do not want to suggest I have much to offer.  The one thing I know a little about is that Penn graduated several starters and should have many new wrestlers and perhaps some at new weights. I have not seen these guys and have no opinions about who will emerge - but there is some depth and several with strong credentials coming in.

They have wrestle-offs this weekend and so that should begin to tell the story of who will emerge and where.  It often is an evolving analysis though where early season results at the Keystone and other competitions may become important.

Penn has an off year at NCAA's last year, but otherwise a good season. I think they should have a better year this year and hoping that carries through the NCAA tourney.  It is a very tough tourney, so my expectations are modest.

I am not as interested in him.  Nothing against him, I just think that his finishing position is AA as a low 3rd as a high.  I don't see him challenging for a NC and I don't see him, so long as he is healthy, not pulling in AA this year.

Kannon Webster went for Illinois tonight and got the 20-5 tech fall. Add Jett Strickenberger to my list of guys to watch this year. He won the Southeast open beating Brandon Kaylor in the finals.

Webster is really good. Looks like he could grow into 165 eventually. Long frame.

He has been on my radar since he waxed Vince Cornella with relative ease at U20 trials.
