I was once an idealist unrealist like Mathew.  No chance against the money in politics.

The only thing that makes it in unrealistic is us continuing to just simply be comfortable and content following the herd at chow time.

I did it for fifteen years, but found I felt uncomfortable with my results.

Nader voters had it within their control to push Gore past Bush.  They may have respected their choice but it was strategically a squandered vote.  Once I realized this... I was done voting for the libertarians, writing in my preferred candidates, and so on.

If you believe in my vote my voice, it is not squandered at all.  If your purpose of voting is to be on the winning team, then you have a point.

Do people realize there are other offices elected besides president? And secondly, do people realize that those other offices have a greater impact on your day to day life than a president?

The worst case winner is a punishment to those picking outside the two party system for president, senate, etc.  I'm with you on local elections...

The voter picks the third party candidate, their favorite candidate, who has no real chance of winning.  This is one less vote for their second favorite candidate, who is in a competitive race.  Their third favorite candidate, the worst case outcome, wins.  This is the worst case winner.  The voter is punished for voting idealistically instead of strategically.

The non voter is also punished when the worst case voter wins, where their vote could have made a difference.

I guess I just have to disagree with your angle.   To me, the vote is about my voice and my value.  I don’t think of my voice as a strategic pawn. If I vote my voice I am not punished.  Not being on the “winning team” is not a punishment.   This system wasn’t set up to pick sides and vote to win, it was set up for each of us to have our own voice.

Just my thoughts on it

I understand voting with principles...

The punishment isn't getting a silver medal... it is the consequence of it.  2020 to 2024 was 1984.  It is the governed policies and culture downstream that is the punishment.  Forcing me to vaccinate or be fired is a punishment.  Forcing pronoun use or be written up is a punishment.  My collegues scowling at me for reading the same technical jargon (master server,  white/blacklist, etc.) that we both used yesterday is a punishment.  And so on.

"I did what I could" provided some comfort mentally while being dwarfed in real outcomes.

Again I just completely disagree on that angle and the whole sense of ‘punishment’ (and that 2020-2024 was 1984, I think that’s a bit overzealous).

But that’s okay.  Nothing wrong with disagreeing.

I say get rid of the biparty system.

Ranked choice voting would be a step in that direction.

The electoral also needs to go. It is good to have all states in the country in play and everyone's vote having equal value from a general election standpoint. It would avoids billion dollars being spent in just one swing state to decide an election. Candidates should have to reach all Americans and earn their votes.

The competition without the electoral college I think would lead to greater bipartisanship and keep politicans a little more honest. It would also keep party fringe members at bay as well.

Hmm... those in power controlled our life, language/thoughts, surveilled our location, controlled information flow, banned public gatherings while at the same saying it was fine for public BLM protests, snitches were rewarded...

We should stay a republic and maintain the electoral college.

Get lobbying and money out of politics.

Ban individual investing by politicians and enforce punishment for insider trading.

Ranked choice voting still has problems that can eliminate the moderate choice.

I can honestly say I never felt my life was controlled.  I never felt my language and thoughts were controlled.  I read a lot on social media about how my life and thoughts and language was controlled, but I never expeeeienced it. Public gatherings were not banned from 2020-2024.  Controlled information flow has been going on for decades.

Agree to disagree.
