What coaches do you believe are on the hot seat going into this season? Names typically thrown around:

Bono (Wisc)

Brands (Iowa)

Who else do you got on the list?

I don't think Brands is going anywhere and here's why. They are one of the most successful programs on campus. The administration doesn't care if they don't win it all, they keep selling out CHA and they brought a team trophy home from that March tournament thingie, so they're good.

The Brands are 100% a kick the can down the road situation. Their contract expires in a couple years, Iowa will probably move on then.

I wouldn't put the Brands on a hot seat list. They run one of the best wrestling programs in the country. I don't think they're going anywhere and like others have pointed out they are one of the most successful programs at Iowa currently. My guess is the Iowa admin is perfectly happy with the Brands who are doing a good job, by the way.

Damn I was mulling over this exact post of a topic for about 2-3 days a week or two ago. Most of mine have been mentioned.

I JUST discussed MSU wrestling today at work with an MSU grad, and exactly as @MPhillipsputs it, they simply don't care. In all of these sports, college and pros, there are great reasons to move on from a coach, but not always a ton of options in doing so, and definitely not always options with a greater ceiling. I suspect MSU is in this position as it pertains to wrestling. They don't seem to care too much to try to be competitive beyond what they are currently, and in many ways are the D1 program in your home state that will take you after you had a successful HS career but saw virtually no recruiting movement. Lots of the guys on their roster are former multi-time state champs, but they aren't good enough to AA in college, and the ones that are tend to leave for better wrestling programs (Davison, Dundee, DCC sending kids out of state) or they wind up at U of M, who is substantially more competitive and allows kids to "stay home" in some capacity. Furthermore, when kids DO start to pop at MSU, they hit the portal (Remy Cotton has essentially had an upward trajectory since day 1 at MSU and left after his first year). I think that program is what it is at this point and it may take a bit of luck for them to climb out.

Anyway, FWIW, here was my list...

Goodale (Rutgers)

Bono (Wisconsin)

Chandler (MSU)

A whole tier below those 3 I would say you might have Eggum (Minnesota) and Smith (Missouri) as other names. Eggum could be interesting if Minnesota has a bad year, but I think he can ride the MacEnelly success for a while if he wants now, but it feels like Minnesota fans are used to a bit more success from the team/program as a whole. Smith is mostly related to succession rather than hot seat action, as he has been at Mizzou for 28 years, which is wild to me, especially because he is actually only 59 years old. He's just been coaching for literally the entire time since he graduated college. Oddly enough, Smith was a wrestler at MSU in the late 80's before he moved into coaching. Would be wild to see him move on from Missouri and retire from MSU after rebuilding their tragedy (I have no reason to believe this will ever happen)

Rutgers only made the top 10 in 2019. It’s been downhill since then finishing 34th and 36th the last two years. Rutgers sells thousands of season tickets and continues to draw big crowds. With home matches against Lehigh, Iowa, and Penn State they will remain in the top 5 in attendance. The administration seems to settle for wrestling mediocrity and won’t rock the boat. They remain a sleeping giant.

i took it as permission to pile on, though i didn't catch your exact meaning possible, was it that he's not on staff at all? Cause that would be in coordination with my ironic remark about his hot seat.

Not on the hot seat, but can we take a moment to appreciate how good of a coach Matt Storniolo is? He’s been dealt a shit hand with Northwestern, but has had several great wrestlers with Sebastian Rivera, Ryan Deakin, Yahya Thomas, and Lucas Davidson, while having several other quality guys like Michael DeAugustino, Chris Cannon, and Evan Bates

there are only a tiny handful of programs where it's even possible to be on the "hot seat" because the admin doesn't care at all and as long as the guys aren't getting in trouble on campus, their jobs are forever jobs.

Where can you even end up on the hot seat?

Iowa

PSU

Okie State

Ohio State

Iowa State

Va Tech

I believe Oklahoma and Oregon fired their coaches for lack of results. I would also add Lehigh to the list of place were a coach could b e on the hot seat.

RU faithful is hopeful that the new AD will hold us to some expectations so Goodale starts realizing that dual meets are not the only thing that matter in this sport.

I don't believe at all.

I think Jones does a poor job. He was really good tuning violins at the senior level, he's better at it than Cael and CO, but that is not what makes a good college coach at all. He's not really equipped to coach folk at all from what I can tell.
