Imagine, hypothetically, that NCAA athletes had to be residents of the state in which a college is located.  In other words, Penn State could only use Pennsylvania wrestlers, Iowa could only use Iowa wrestlers, Ohio State could only use Ohio wrestlers, etc.

How would this change the current landscape of best D1 wrestling programs, if at all?

I imagine Penn State and Ohio State would still be the top 2.  But how about colleges like Illinois or Rutgers?  Maybe Cornell would not be nearly as good and Iowa and Oklahoma State would also drop significantly.

This hypothetical would crush the smaller schools like a Lock Haven, Campbell.. etc. But like everything else wrestlers will find loop holes and I imagine move to the state of the school they would like to attend in high school.

What about Blair kids? Matt kolodick lived at Blair for 4 years , then Princeton for 5 ..9 years straight of living in NJ , would he still be an “Ohio” guy …what about jojo Aragona 4 years at pope John but lived across the border in PA

I would make the hypothetical rule that you would have to spend at least 2 full years before enrolling in college in the "home" state.

What about the Lee family ? They moved to state college when Nick was senior, so does nick have to be team Indiana but joe and Matt are team PA bc they spent a few years in state college ?

Under this hypo Nick would have to wrestle for an Indiana team but Matt could wrestle in PA.

What about Myles Martin? Lived in one state but wrestled 4 years of hs in another?

what about Ethan smith? Two years one state then two in another?

what about John Doe? Lived and wrestled his whole life in New Orleans but then a hurricane forces the family to move to Houston?

Could we define what it means to be living, too??

I’m not too sure that there’s enough people in Indiana with a heartbeat to field a full college wrestling team, and by contrast, I feel like folks in Wisconsin eat enough red meat to have two or three hearts in their chest. Should they be allowed to wrestle regular humans? Is that a human life they’re living?

Am assuming you are speculating on this year NCAA tournament so PSU would only have 4 wrestlers, can they win it with those 4?. Believe OSU would have 8, so ... 🤔

PSU can field 8 this year with their current roster but I'd be shaking in my boots

We should get @Wrestleknownothing to go back and recalculate dual team results and re-rank the teams.  Out of state wrestlers count as a forfeit, obviously there can be a double forfeit.  Then plug those records in to compute new rpi and seeds for conf tourneys.  Run the predicted tourney results, seed the NCAA tournament and give us the new NCAA projections with 95% confidence interval.

He's got time before the weekend.  It'll provide good insight on whether to adopt Jimmy's idea before the tournaments.  Personally, I'm all for it.  C'mon Wkn!!

I finished this before I finished reading your paragraph.

Don't be naive, most if not all top tier schools work with out of state student athletes to establish in state residency from the day they register.   Out of staters pay a much higher tuition than in state public U tuition. The sooner they get the student to establish in state residency, the lower the tuition and, hence; scholarship value assessed against the ADs wrestling budget.  The wrestling coaches are handicapped by their AD budget, so a lower scholi value stretches those budgets little further.  Scholi value was one of the reasons Stanford went with significantly less than 9.9 scholarship allocation for so long.

Many states only require 1 year of residency before the student can declare for in state tuition.  You would encounter a legal battle over a 2 year restriction.

Private U's would strenuously object as such a requirement opposes the university mission to maintain a geographically diverse student population. In state  / out of state tuition is not an issue.

It's an interesting thought, sorry to pin prick your bubble.
