I would like to see 2 per nation but someone said earlier the IOC don't like that because it concentrates a few nations above all the rest and they wanted more equanimity.

Pro Wrestling Sport GIF by ALL ELITE WRESTLINGAm I the only one thinking this is starting to develop into a tag team matchup between nations…I don’t know how the particulars would work but I gotta be honest that could be awesome

I think if countries could send "teams" to the olympics it would be cool. Like have each country wrestle off and then progress through a knockout bracket for gold, silver and bronze. I think that would make the olympics more exciting although it might not reduce the number of matches. The only issue is that apart from 3 countries no one else has enough depth across 6 weights for it to be a fair match up

Wrestling was almost eliminated from the Olympics because the tournaments took too long. The IOC and world/national federations are trying to shorten events, not make them longer. If that's what the powers that be want, I wouldn't be against a more robust qualifier system. Do pods, do 2-pers, whatever, then the winners of the qualifiers can advance to the existing Worlds or Olympics format, even if some countries have 2 entrants. But UWW is also trying to expand the sport, not have the same countries dominate every year.

Wrestling is not a major revenue/cultural power house sport. Wrestling also has no appeal in France, northern Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria these places where the EU aristocrats that run these sport governing bodies are from (*yes I know Switzerland has this belt wrestling folk style in some areas, it really has no meaningful connection to olympic wresting).

So swimming, sailing, horse events get a lot of love and favors while wrestling, weight weightlifting are treated like the step children.

To be fair even though Judo gets a lot of favorable treatment through the French connection, they still only have on competitor per weight. Maybe going head to head in the combat sports is a sticking point for them (countries fixing matches).

OTOH, Judo has multiple competitors per weight class from the same country at their Worlds.

I don't follow international Judo anymore. so maybe the rules changed
