From Waterloo to the world stage, the story of Dan Gable is heading to the big screen. The upcoming film based on the life of the legendary coach, Olympian, and namesake of our museum has officially been cast and is set to begin production this summer. We’re honored to see Dan’s incredible story continue to inspire new generations on and off the mat.

Looking forward to see whom they might get to portray Ray Brinzer, as the quirky character. At the very least they should consider using Randy Lewis as a script consultant.

Cool. I missed the whole "reaction" updates, but golden shit is good, right?

Anyway... Gable's still the guy people associate with the spot. I'm not sure how much everyone knows who he is, but 15-20 years ago, everyone seemed to know who Dan Gable was just as they'd known who... Cheryl Miller was or Phelps as a swimmer.

I think the vast majority of people under 50 have no clue who Gable is.

From a Hollywood trope and plot lines angle in terms of cinema, doesn't the Gable story lack compelling villains? The Soviets Gable beat internationally were not big bad Ivan Dragos. They were the weaker parts of the Soviet team and have faded to obscurity with time. And in college, Gable himself was the Hollywood cast villain who played the Goliath to someone else's David.

Watched the Ferrari movie couple nights ago.  Thought it was gonna be kind've opposite the Gable movie ... win the first downhill after vs win everything then lose the last.   Thats not what it was about.  :classic_unsure:

You don't need a cookie cutter bad guy vs good guy, Rocky type movie.

It can just be about... Gable.

It can also be about the obstacles he's overcome or the tragedies, the death of his Sister, his incredible career, heartbreaking loss, the pressure on him to win the '72 Olympics as the overwhelming favorite... and just a movie.

I'm not looking for an Avengers style caricature of him.

I also don't know how many people under 50 know about him... I don't know how many knew about Robles. I don't think ignorance is a good reason to NOT make a movie, but I would still stand by the argument he's the most prominent name in American Wrestling History.

Hear! hear!

And, no doubt, having a 2nd Gable who's no slouch at wrestling helps keep the name alive for the youngsters.

Well put.  The best stuff written about Gable revolves around how his biggest antagonist is himself and his extraordinary struggles for constant perfection for himself and his athletes.

37 at the end of this month, Gable was our idol still in HS in the early/mid 2000s, likely as a product of the influence of our coaching staff who were a mid-60s retired teacher and his sons, a 40-ish year old teacher and another who co-owned a restaurant, both having been all-state when they were in HS, the teacher went on to wrestle at a small program while getting his degree.

Well aware of who Cael was at the time, too. Gable got more run in our room. Louden Swain was a distant second, probably.

This is the Gable I was taught - own biggest antagonist and striving for perfection driving him crazy

I turned 37 a couple months ago and grew up in the WPIAL - Gable/Iowa was still the biggest name/lore in our wrestling room but similarly my HS coaches were in their 60s and 70s
