I don’t know about either of those.

Him winning 125…I think the returning champ and several others will have a say in that. I think almost all the AAs return.

And them “getting” him…seeing as Cornell got him then likely gladly parted ways with him (and his Dad 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️) due to academic and maybe legal issues…and he landed back home after a short auction where Dad likely put him up for bidding and Rutgers “won”.

How did the other 4x guys do?? I genuinely ask, cuz I’m too lazy to look up who they even are.

And I’m thinking they may need to start grabbing more 3x and 2x cuz 4x are nice but 4 out of the 5 in history aren’t gonna help too much when you have to field 10 weights every year and compete in the Big Ten. It still holds, they cant seem to keep enough of the home grown talent home. Rutgers based on state and regional talent is a chronic under performer.
AND given their finances in the AD, not sure a non-revenue sport like wrestling rates a big money splash hire unless some wealthy alum steps in to foot the bill. If they wanna shock the world and throw a million at JB, Jersey Mike is gonna have to raise sub prices and fund it.

Knox has beaten almost all of these other star young guys including Bassett and finished ahead of Bassett in 5 of the 7 brackets they’ve been in together so if Bassett is going to be a contender at 141/149 then Knox is at 125. He’s also been training with Burroughs who has been giving him the highest praise

Rutgers was the #2 choice when he orginally picked Cornell and one of his main reasons for leaving was he was homesick and too far from his personal trainer

the AD came up with 1.2 million for Knox with no hesitation. Zinn the new AD seems all in on wrestling considering football and bball are lost causes.

2 of the 4 4xers won ncaa titles for Rutgers , the 3rd was checked out of wrestling already before he transferred in. In fact Rutgers has much more success with 4xers than 3xers. 3 3xers that went to Rutgers never AAed for various reasons ( Winston, Oliveri, soldano).

also Rutgers spent the 6th most money on wrestling in the country last year so the broke athletic department isn’t hurting them .

They have been getting more out of state kids.  Without looking, Shawver, Harer (2), Smith, Catka, Perkins, Gibson (he won a Fargo with Valencia and Stanich in it)

And they just got the most prized NJ wrestler.

Yes they have.

How did the AD come up with $1.2 million dollars for Knox?  Is he a line item in the athletic budget? It doesn't seem like something the AD would or should be involved in.

Just going by AI which draws from Flo, mat scouts, and intermat, recent recruiting looked something like this:

2020 15th

2021 17th

2022 8th

2023 14th

2024 4th

2025 13th

Recruiting is not really the reason they finished in the 30s twice recently.

If you've had a kid wrestle at a high level in NJ, you've felt the sort of culture a lot of fans create, and to me that Jersey tough guy culture and brand permeates the Rutgers wrestling fanbase, and to a lesser extent the program itself. And a lot of kids and families want nothing to do with it. I mean, if they want to stay close  they can go to Penn, Columbia or Princeton if they can get in, or Rider or Lehigh and more. And of course if they want to get out as many do, they have all the programs in the country. I know plenty of kids like the Jersey schtick, but plenty don't. Goodale has done a good job making the program relevant, but he has seemed to embrace that brand in doing so. And I think that brand is a fading one.

To Majors point- I mentioned this earlier.

They need not only a regime change but a culture change.  This is why RU is not a good fit for the B10.  The fan base is a NJ bro high schoolish like atmosphere.  Goodale was a HS coach and it’s carried over.  Watch the other B10 teams when they come in for a match.  Much more polished and professional.

it would be a tough job to come in and change the cultural and the best kids are still wanting to go to other programs.

Knox has a problem background and most didn’t want him so he’ll fit in fine with the bro culture.

Didn't he not get into Cornel?  Jaja - I think that also played a roll in why he didn't go there.

I've heard a similar figure about the Nil number, over 5 years.

He should do well because he's already at that level

All.pf that may be true, but the talent is enough to do better than 35th.  Recruiting rankings seem to indicate a top 20ish program.   I don't think jersey tough is the problem.

What about Taylor Walsh? I have no idea what he is doing or where he is these days. But he has Jersey ties!

1. RU is not a good fit for the B10 - for all sports.  ACC would've been a better fit for RU.

2. Wrestling, if they want consistent AA's and NC, need a regime and culture change.

RU is in tough spot (other sports too) despite NJ having great athletes as the best kids want to go to the elite programs.  For wrestling, with a marquee coach, they could be a consistent mid tier team in the B10.

But much needs to change for this to happen.  Everything needs to be elevated a level - elite coach, better recruits, change the culture.

Having a rather new AD from an SEC school does she 'get' wrestling in NJ.  Per reports RU wrestling is one of the biggest spenders/budgets in the B10.  Sick that a sub performing team flies private charter to the NCAA championship.

Just show her the ways of a Pork Roll!

Taylor is CEO of a company he started and I think coaches youth wrestling

Chad Walsh is an assistant at Drexel and coached the youngest Walsh brother to ncaas this year ( he went 3-2 @ 165)

Well I don’t know if JB wants to Coach but if he did I think he could make a splash like DT.
But I am thinking about Bryan Snyder Nebraska’s assistant coach, Nebraska’s program has been doing well for the last few years, I wonder if he would like or want the position.

He’s waiting for manning to retire.

I don’t necessarily think Burroughs doesn’t want to coach in college, but I do think he doesn’t want to leave NJ.  If he goes anywhere it’s probably Rutgers IMO.  And they may have the money to make it happen.

It is a risk with the changes afoot, but at the same time I think IL is a stronger draw for in state wrestlers than Rutgers. As an IL native I know U of I is a well regarded school and a place Illinois residents desire to go. Rutgers doesn't seem to be as strong as a draw for NJ natives, but maybe I'm off base.

Ashnault 4x AA and champ as a senior.  Suriano was at 3 schools, there he was a 2x finalist and champ.

Knox hasn't started and Camp came from Ohio State after the gun charges.

Knox beat Lillendahl in the last few years - and Lillendahl gave Forrest 2 of his 3 HS loses.

It's not a given he wins 125 of course but I think his chances are good.

Huh?

Are you referring to the 2021 Who's #1 at 106lbs?

More than a few years there...
