I can’t figure Rutgers out. NJ has great wrestling and good football and Rutgers can’t seem to get either right. The kids don’t seem to wanna stay home.

I don’t know if a new coach changes all that keeps some of the top NJ wrestling talent at home.

But I do know one thing, a big splash hire in the mold of DT or Cael ain’t happening. No way they’re shelling out big bucks to the likes of Burroughs for wrestling when their Athletic Dept is hemorrhaging money.

Goodale has never been a top coach. RU never performs well in the nationals. I don't think he is a very good recruiter and their wrestlers never take the next step.

Shawver and Olivieri seemed to underperform their abilities some in their careers.

They have gotten 4 of the 5 4xers (the last 4).  Knox is huge and should win 125 next year.

I don’t know about either of those.

Him winning 125…I think the returning champ and several others will have a say in that. I think almost all the AAs return.

And them “getting” him…seeing as Cornell got him then likely gladly parted ways with him (and his Dad 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️) due to academic and maybe legal issues…and he landed back home after a short auction where Dad likely put him up for bidding and Rutgers “won”.

How did the other 4x guys do?? I genuinely ask, cuz I’m too lazy to look up who they even are.

And I’m thinking they may need to start grabbing more 3x and 2x cuz 4x are nice but 4 out of the 5 in history aren’t gonna help too much when you have to field 10 weights every year and compete in the Big Ten. It still holds, they cant seem to keep enough of the home grown talent home. Rutgers based on state and regional talent is a chronic under performer.
AND given their finances in the AD, not sure a non-revenue sport like wrestling rates a big money splash hire unless some wealthy alum steps in to foot the bill. If they wanna shock the world and throw a million at JB, Jersey Mike is gonna have to raise sub prices and fund it.

1. RU is not a good fit for the B10 - for all sports.  ACC would've been a better fit for RU.

2. Wrestling, if they want consistent AA's and NC, need a regime and culture change.

RU is in tough spot (other sports too) despite NJ having great athletes as the best kids want to go to the elite programs.  For wrestling, with a marquee coach, they could be a consistent mid tier team in the B10.

But much needs to change for this to happen.  Everything needs to be elevated a level - elite coach, better recruits, change the culture.

Having a rather new AD from an SEC school does she 'get' wrestling in NJ.  Per reports RU wrestling is one of the biggest spenders/budgets in the B10.  Sick that a sub performing team flies private charter to the NCAA championship.

Ashnault 4x AA and champ as a senior.  Suriano was at 3 schools, there he was a 2x finalist and champ.

Knox hasn't started and Camp came from Ohio State after the gun charges.

Knox beat Lillendahl in the last few years - and Lillendahl gave Forrest 2 of his 3 HS loses.

It's not a given he wins 125 of course but I think his chances are good.

Well. Ashnault worked out. I always liked that kid.
But with the others…Suriano, Knox and Camp…maybe Rutgers should avoid being the Wayward Boys School for NJ 4x Wrestling champs after they leave/get tossed from their 1st and 2nd choices. And focus on landing more of the depth NJ has. Cuz with what they have in a 250mi radius around them, they should perform better both in season and at NCAAs.

Edinboro in their prime was good for 2nd chance people - Donahoe, King - who am I missing.

Lock Haven had Marstellar, Kolat and recently, Henson and Noto

can be a mixed bag - I think Knox can do well since he has a place and coaches in that area already and like Jax, he has already had success against top guys

Was Shawver a highly touted recruit out of high school?  I thought he was more along the lines of a mid-level guy who jumped levels over his career.  It was great to get him on the podium, and even his Blood Round run in Philly was impressive.  Whatever happened this season is a huge question mark to the fanbase.

Olivieri I sort of feel for.  Had to burn his redshirt twice when he wasn't ready because Sammy Alvarez had weight cutting issues.  Then just never puts it together at nationals.  Such a shame...

RU's downfall is pretty disheartening as a fan.  With Goodale's contract going through 2032, I just don't foresee the future looking bright.  Think Knox is gonna use the year here to bolster his resume, show he's a good egg and whatnot, then leave for greener pastures.  Sigh...

I'm admittedly not knowledgeable on pedigrees and recruiting. Im basing my comments on some of the results I've witnessed or seen data for

Shawver has had wins over Mckee and Moran (2021), Caleb Smith and Terukina (2022), Romney Fugitt Nagao (2024), close losses to Hildebrandt, champ Glory (2023). His ceiling seemed higher. Olivieri maybe I'm remembering incorrectly- just know he was wrestling tight matches with RBY-Cannon-Ramos-Phillippi start of his career- all losses though. Alvarez is another one that was disappointing. Evidently you say it was weight stuff so not on coach though.

I think the staff had done really well…until the last two years.  No AAs?   None?  I just couldn’t believe that stat.  You have to at least land a transfer who can AA.  They need to at least hire a big name assistant.   Someone guys would want to come train with.

You know you're doing bad when your instate competition: an ivy league school that doesn't do athletic scholarships and a team in the MAC that has way less funding is able to get AA's and somehow you can't.

I don’t know if he was necessarily an “elite” recruit, but IIRC it was kind of a big deal at the time because he was one of the first pretty good recruits from outside NJ they had gotten in awhile

I figure they should be able to muster 3 AAs per year.  Some years 5 some years 1-2.  I’m not asking for 8!  I’d throw everything I have into getting 2-3 studs.  Whatever it takes.  Then just plug in around. Who cares about duals?  Like American U a few years back.

He's making a lot more money with RU than Cornell and sort of has a fight camp-style training system nearby so I think this is his final college

Shawver I think came to their attention when he beat Howard who they wanted.  Not a big recruit and 2 years ago when he won the Big 10s he was wrestling well and they developed him a lot.

Look at the heat maps at the bottom of this Flo piece. I reiterate, Rutgers should be better. They need to do something…coaching change at the top, fresh faces at assistants, somehow get more resources from outside donors (AD finances are a mess)…something!

This is more telling.  NJ 2nd highest amount of qualifiers with 28.  Believe about 10 from NJ were AA.

RU, who is the state University of NJ, has zero AA and a minute fraction of the 28 quals on their team.

Coach gets pumped about - 8 or 9 on the team made NCAA and that seems to be the benchmark- qualifying for NCAA.

To the extreme, a team like PSU is proud of having 8 who AA’d !!!

They have been getting more out of state kids.  Without looking, Shawver, Harer (2), Smith, Catka, Perkins, Gibson (he won a Fargo with Valencia and Stanich in it)

And they just got the most prized NJ wrestler.
