Sometimes a direct angled knee strike can be more damaging than a glancing blow. To drop like that means he got hurt bad.

The first MMA fighter I talked to didn't say that the wrestling styles Greco-Roman, Freestyle, and US Folkstyle have no techniques or skills. He just said that they're nothing special in terms of that other than physical conditioning and weight cutting and he also said that some obscure folk wrestling styles such as Buno, Turkish Oil, Shuai Jiao, and Mongolian wrestling are even more technical and have more variety in skill set. Nobody. No human being can ever do that no matter what skill or training. Humans are just humans. Not gods.

MMA, like boxing, is run as prizefighting and not purely a sport. Very different from the tennises, badmitons, judos, or amateur wrestlings of the world. There are perks to it (money), but also massive downsides and distractions like woven into the fabric corruption, the showmanship and show business aspects. It's a different mindset and skillset to thrive in something that's in some ways a giant popularity contest masquerading as a sport. In sportive systems, all you have to worry about is your athletic performance (at least in most individual sports, team sports have interpersonal politics with team selection). In prize fighting, you have to worry about how boring your style is perceived as and how many ppvs you sell.

This is what non-wrestlers say when they have no idea where to even begin to learn the feel and technique that comes with decades of wrestling experience. Wrestlers are in great shape, but are they the only martial artists in good shape? Not a chance. But they have extremely acute awareness and feel for how positions and bodyweight can impact mma positions that other martial arts don’t give you. One thing I found pretty cringe during the open was his use of first names for specific wrestlers as if he's buddy buddy with them. Didn't feel like unbiased announcing. Anyone know how much dreshaun Ross weighs? I feel like he's one of the few wrestlers nowadays who isn't a 19 year old junior.
