So sorry to hear. Sasso showed so much courage in trying to come back from such an injury. Wish him the best.

What the heck happened to Michigan?
Sheerstress replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
I would think the Mantanonas will split 165 and 174 over the next three years. So 141 - 174 are pretty well covered. Several other good recruits coming in, but uncertain how they'll work out. -
Some nice wins so far by some of the younger guys, but there are too many soft spots in our lineup against one of the better teams.

Sure, he very well might get more transfers the way lineups shift and change over time. But I'm pretty sure all the above grad transfers were headed to OSU before Taylor was announced as coach, so he kind of lucked out and started his coaching career with a lineup full of proven veterans. Any new transfers he gets this next year will be ones that he landed himself, and on his watch.

From 149 on up, he's got a very solid lineup of mostly accomplished seniors that have definitely been energized by the energy he brings as a new coach with a decorated career. The honeymoon will end starting next year, when most of his top wrestlers graduate, and that will probably be his first real test as OSU coach.

In Vegas, he was definitely off from his usual dominating form. His knee was taped, although I didn't think it was as serious as it was. Hopefully he'll be able to make a full recovery.

Fish vs Saldate. Both these guys were at Michigan State last year. This is the first time Fish has been at this weight, presumably in years. All because a Michigan guy came in and displaced him!

I believe so (limited number of tix sold through ticket office).

Beau is supposed to be back by second semester. They thought he had a torn ACL, but when he went in for surgery, it was intact, and the MRI had been wrong. They'll probably make a decision on who stays at 165 depending on how each wrestler looks over the next month. It looks like both Mantanonas will be the mainstays at 165 and 174 for the next few years.

Right now my school is selling all session for $400 (upper tier) and $500 (lower tier). Ticket availability has sometimes varied depending on the year, but in the last few years, the price seems to have jumped a bit.

I thought that in order to qualify for an Olympic redshirt you at least have to compete or place in a qualifying tournament. Is it just the fact that he was the defending Olympic champion that afforded him the year?

Old habits die hard. -
Walker and Bullock advance to finals. Gilcher and Walters drops semi matches to OSU opponents.

When he finally stepped down from the NDSU job in 2011, he had been at that position for an amazing 47 years. Managed to beat cancer in the process. RIP to a great coach.

Rei Higuchi's comment on weight changes
Sheerstress replied to Mr. PeanutButter's topic in International Wrestling
https://olympics.com/en/news/paris-2024-weight-categories-olympic-boxing-qualifiers The pool of athletes at these lowest weight classes in definitely smaller, but they are there. And 57 kg is simply way too high for too many great competitors. -

I'd like the 10 classes from 1969 to 1996. 48kg/105.5 lb. 52kg/114.5 lb. 57 kb/125.5 lb. 62kg/136.5 lb. 68 kg/149.9 lb. 74kg/163 lb. 82kg/180.5 lb. 90kg/198 lb. 100kg/220 lb. HWT/Unlimited -
Yes, that was Caster Semenya, who I mentioned. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caster_Semenya

Regardless of how our guys did over the past week, one question: does anyone know if any/all of the Olympians are going to wrestle in the World Championships in October in Albania?

I am completely against allowing transgender women like Lia Thomas, who went through male puberty and then later transitioned, to compete in women’s sports. But in the case of Khelif, it appears that she was BORN with these differences. She was identified as a girl as birth in the usual manner, and then grew up accordingly. It wasn’t until years later, that supposedly the IBA had her tested, and stated that she was genotypically male (XY), and had naturally elevated testosterone levels. This is still somewhat controversial, as the results have never been made public, and the Russian-run IBA has since been stripped of its recognition as a sports governing body by the IOC. Unlike transgender athletes like Thomas or Fallon Fox, Khelif never went through any type of transitioning. It would have almost certainly been completely illegal in her Muslim country of Algeria. She probably falls into a category of people that are genotypically male but phenotypically female or something in between, often referred to as Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. This was also the case with track athletes Caster Semenya and Stella Walsh, who both competed in the Olympics as women. However, similar to Fallon Fox, who competed in MMA, the effect of Khelif’s hormonal differences are much more physically damaging to the opponent in a combat sport such as boxing, as was seen recently in the match against Carini of Italy. This is causing an explosive debate to say the least. Another twist in the issue of who should be allowed to compete as women in sporting events.
