who knows if he'd even be a good coach. not all of the greats are, because the things they do so naturally are impossible to teach. i'll tell you one thing he probably doesn't want: to get kicked in the face.

Meyer Shapiro Steroids Accusation
ugarles replied to Indiana-Hawk-Wrestling-Fan's topic in College Wrestling
this is such standard athlete-speak that it's not even worth quoting, much less getting upset about. it's white noise. empty calories. give that interview some steroids is what i'm sayinig -
all i'm saying is that yianni said the same thing but i don't think cornell was going to ask him to cut no matter what the lineup looked like. people say this like it's a bad thing but i don't think it is at all.
-
i hope once you go back to back you have a little more say in your weight. let the team warp around you a little.

re: Cornell, Joy and Cerchio are coming off of greyshirt. Joy probably has to beat out Cornella at 141 (I hope Cornella is back, anyway) and/or Fernandez at 149. If he doesn't/can't get into the starting lineup he's probably not an impact freshman. Cerchio almost certainly slots in for Ramirez at 165. I'd be pretty surprised if Knox, Perentin, Elijah D. the Cortezes, DeJesus, Correa and Dellagatta didn't all greyshirt this year. The big hole in the lineup is 184 and I don't see anyone on that list (or even coming off of greyshirt) who fits the bill.

according to the coach, he's stepped away from wrestling

Marinelli WAS a hammer! He never stood at the top of the stairs but come on the bar can't be that high.

Penn State lineup 2025/2026 w/ Ono CONFIRMED
ugarles replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
As Ono said on TRL nothing is certain until he gets his visa. With current processing times he should be in Pennsylvania in 2028. -
no additional insight; i've only heard the same scuttlebutt as you. maybe they pull his shirt if Greg D. is hurt or if Milani underperforms, but all indications are that they are giving the incoming class another year, including Knox. The assault charges in NJ, to the extent they are still live by the fall, also counsel against jumping straight into the lineup.

Fernandez is listed on the Cornell Athletics website as a senior but that's because someone in Ithaca screwed up two years ago. Before his second year the roster listed him as a junior, so this year he was listed as a senior.
-
Elijah took bronze at U17 last year, got surgery on a torn labrum (surgery is a family tradition) then took his senior year off from competition to recover.

My guess is the summer. He said in a Flo video that he was recruited by Penn State but he didn't want to cut and (in not so many words) work that hard lol. My lineup: 125: Greg D. (Milani if Greg D. is hurt) 133: Ferrara (he was better than Ungar at 133, unless Ungar grows into the weight over the summer) 141: Cornella (Saunders if Cornella is hurt) 149: Fernandez/Joy, depending on wrestleoff 157: Shapiro 165: Cerchio 174: Ruiz 184: Hansen? Matt Furman? Transfer? 197: Dellagatta 285: Davis 184 is a gap in the lineup and might be for a bit unless Ruiz grows into it. 285 gets interesting the following year when Big Delly gets off of greyshirt.

Neither Saunders nor Greg D. were part of the Senior Night class honorees, so I assume they both still have Ivy eligibility left. They might have to do what Ramirez and Foca did and take the fall semester off before returning to the roster after the semester break. I don't know what Saunders' situation on the roster would be if Cornella is back from injury, so I could see him in the portal. Greg D.? I don't see it; his older brother is coaching and his younger brother is going to be a greyshirt in Ithaca next year. If Greg is healthy, he's our 125 next year while we wait for Knox to finish his greyshirt (and community service.)

Meyer Shapiro Steroids Accusation
ugarles replied to Indiana-Hawk-Wrestling-Fan's topic in College Wrestling
not my problem! i'm a cornell guy suggesting that shapiro wasn't whining about his specific loss or casting specific aspersions. i think the kasak accusers and the kasak defenders had pre-existing beliefs that they are happy to have a reason to air out. -

it had to be after the zerban match, since he already knew he was in 5th. it wasn't in response to anything about any of his matches at all. he said it in the closing minutes of a 15 minute post-tournament interview that included discussion of his hospitalization and recovery when he was asked about his future weight class. -
it's changed recently! a number of eagles didn't go to see obama either. and tbh, "accepting an invitation from the president regardless of who he is" is a value that he could reasonably have under these circumstances. (though i think koll is conservative, and not only because he posted a pic on ig with jim jordan and called him "a great wrestler and better congressman.") i stg i am not trying to be political! it's your choice to assume bad faith. i had no idea they were running four mats until i got to the arena a little late and they were already at 157 in the consi semis. i had no idea they were going to keep rolling on four mats until they announced it. jason bryant says that the format wasn't changed for the presidential visit and i'm inclined to believe him but still think it's a worse format.

Meyer Shapiro Steroids Accusation

honestly no idea what you're talking about. I thought in the closing seconds of the match he was trying to get a turn for a major. Lovett grabbed his fingers, Shapiro got a little aggressive with the armbar, Lovett pushed him in the face as time expired, Shapiro explained himself to the corner, Lovett came at him, pissed off, but he and Shapiro talked it out, shook hands and moved on. Flash of emotion by both guys, mature reconciliation by both guys. I thought he was implying that they kept testing his kid so none of the full-time starters were at risk. I don't think Shapiro was accusing Kasak, though I do think he was generally implying that some people/programs are cutting with the help of steroids. Also implying that he'd need the boost to go 165 or to go down to 149 without sapping his own strength. He prefers to wrestle without the deep cut that is standard in wrestling, which is good for his long term health. Better for his long term health than repeatedly landing on his head, at least. -
well, koll and yianni (both of whom i have met and like a lot, personally) went to the white house during trump's first term and i didn't like it then for explicitly political reasons but it made sense for them to go if it aligned with their values. am i not allowed to have an opinion? i'm not stopping them from anything or even mentioning it without a prompt from you. whether or not it is good for wrestling overall, i have no idea. mma is also very conservative-coded and it is absolutely good business for ncaa wrestling to get the mma crowd to care more about college wrestling. dana white has invested a lot in getting nickal over to mixed results (because he is boring and a mediocre striker). it's not a troll thread and i am not some kid intellectually trapped by marxist social pressure. i'm a 54 year old lawyer.
-
not a stunt! i can't stress enough that my objection was logistical, not political. what i believed to be a visit-induced change was an unfortunate side effect of a reasonable security practice. i don't begrudge trump going to the ncaa wrestling finals any more than i thought it was odd when obama went to an ncaa basketball game or when any president goes to the super bowl.

idk that he knows. a cornell wrestling forum poster (and doctor, apparently) said that it sounds like a post-concussion epileptic side effect -
Philadelphia 2025 - pretty good location!
ugarles replied to Dark Energy's topic in College Wrestling
tbh this was the one thing i hated about wells fargo. i've only been to two ncaas - Philly and NYC - and at NYC, the video screens all had the score bug on it. in Philly, they didn't - the only way to see the score on the matches you weren't focused on was to look at the on-mat scorer (not great for my current state of vision) or the ring underneath the second deck, which was designed by a sadist (awful layout if you were in the upper bowl; the score that was hidden *by* the jumbotron was 180 degrees from the score that was blocked because it was directly beneath your seat). as for philly, it was great to go. and even though i disagree with @Coastal about whether our cities are burning, i have to agree that the philly roast pork sandwich is incredible (even though john's doesn't do broccoli rabe, so i have to go back to get one with it). The line at John's after Session 5 was >80% wrestling fans. -
