  1. If top stalling is so easy, why don’t we see more athletes choosing top in the third period when they are up by a point or two?
  2. Reading the name Vito makes me hungry for Jimmy John’s.
  3. Considering that Michigan is the defending champion, has home mat advantage, and outperformed their 2022 showing in the dual vs Penn State by one point, I think that the Wolverines are a good bet to repeat.
  4. I thought using marginalized groups as your mascot was largely phased out over the past couple of decades.
  5. Is 133 the toughest P4P weight class (at the AA level, anyway) this year?
  6. https://fightingillini.com/news/2022/10/13/illinois-announces-plans-for-illinois-wrestling-training-center.aspx Wrestling doesn't draw the crowds of football or hoops, but the school is definitely investing in it. Really, I think Illinois is trying to get to the elite level in as many sports as possible. Women's basketball and the combined track and field program have seen big changes in the past year. They should do better on the stats thing though, yeah.
  7. This stuff is probably written by some student intern (no idea, just a wild guess). I've noticed that roster bios are not incredibly well proofread across the board, but in particular for Illinois. That said, sometimes high school competition is referred to as "state finals" like the final leg of the state series. Not great in wrestling because we see the finals as the championship bout of an elimination tournament.
  8. I don’t want to harp on your ideas, but the university of Illinois’ State Farm center has the saxiest national anthems actually, the saxophone version was one of my favorite ones I’ve heard at a sporting event.
  9. How about if you lose a challenge, your opponent gets to choose either three points added to his score, or to make you do wind sprints before resuming the bout.
  10. The obvious schools are USC and UCLA. They should not be allowed to join the Big Ten unless they can field varsity wrestling teams. Overall, I think the trend of schools bringing back wrestling will continue, particularly at the lower end (d3, etc.). Seeing the increasing participation and recognition of girls wrestling is great. more colleges sponsoring women's wrestling, which will help the sport grow on the boys and men's side as well. Easier to invest in coaching and facilities when potentially double the number of athletes benefit. Also, with title ix concerns, it's good that there now exists a sport that can "balance" out wrestling (and it ends up being wrestling!). I wonder what would happen if more top schools would follow Iowa's lead and invest in the women's side. the growth for wrestling as a whole could really explode.
  11. I don't think riding time is a problem. The problem is wrestlers choosing down and not escaping quickly.
  12. I'm far, far from a historian, but check out '91-'92 AA (1992 tournament, big schools) for Illinois. In particular, 140 had two future NCAA champions (though different years) squaring off in the final https://ihsa.org/data/wr/records/ybyyr5.htm 140 pounds Place Name School 1 Ernest Benion Romeoville (H.S.) 2 Eric Siebert LaSalle (L.-Peru) 3 Scott Benson Naperville (Central) 4 Jayson Querciagrossa Peoria (Woodruff) 5 Steve Gerstung Arlington Heights (Hersey) 6 Steve Bakey Barrington In addition, a future NCAA finalist was champ at 103, and a Joe Williams won 152. '93 also featured 3 future NCAA Champs (TJ Williams in addition to Siebert and Joe Williams from the prior year) Another random thought - If you won an IHSA title in the AA class at 145 pounds in the '90s, you had an excellent chance of winning an NCAA title later on! https://ihsa.org/data/wr/records/ybych1.htm
  13. Because the metric system is inferior and should be avoided where possible.
  14. Oh man, I thought he had pinned himself too! Was confused about the Neb challenge for a moment as in my understanding you cannot use instant replay for calling or overturning a pin and watching live I thought the near fall was obvious. But then from 4 back points to zero? Bogus! Maximo has faced a string of tough opponents. At times looks like he’s just about ready to hang at the level of some of these highly ranked wrestlers. He could be do some big things in the next couple of years with just a modest amount of improvement. Hopefully he keeps his confidence up despite his unimpressive looking W/L record this year.
  15. This was definitely one of the largest wrestling crowds of the year at the State Farm Center. maybe the biggest of the season, actually. This is a large arena, and they only started holding the varsity wrestling meets here last year. I think Z. Braunagle could have won had he not picked down in the third period or not made that mistake that put him on his back. Who knows, maybe he was too tired though. The OT match with Ruth and Labriola was amazing. Ruth wrestled better, IMO, but gave up three takedowns after taking deep shots on each of those three but losing a scramble after a successful counter from M.L. No need for excuses though, Nebraska was supposed to win anyway. I don't know if you can discount the final score due to a forfeit or any lineup changes - illinois didn't wrestle Carr at 157, for instance. What was the reason for the forfeit, anyway? One thing is for sure. Illini needs to drill finishes off of an opponent's whizzer for the postseason. came up so many times tonight.
  16. Wyrd.
