What about conference? Never heard it referred to as "conferences"

until there is enough data, wrestlers with cool names tend to get slightly overrated.

OU vs Illinois?
PencilNeck replied to ionel's topic in ILLINI AND ILLINI RTC FANS's Talk about the Illini
The illini men’s gymnastics team faces off against Oklahoma today at that time. https://fightingillini.com/sports/mens-gymnastics/schedule -
Are you kidding me? One individual national title versus one team title might be a more interest question. Even though tournament scoring is not always the best yardstick (as discussed on other threads), Wrestling is absolutely as much (maybe even more so) a team sport as an individual one. While even just getting on the podium at NCAAs is a huge accomplishment, and one that teammates should be proud of, I'd imagine sharing a team championship with the guys you wrestled with for four (or five) years would be a bigger deal. Another question that i think might be more interesting could be a team conference title versus individual AA honor. Again, the team success would be an easy choice for many. Might depend on your past experiences with being a part of successful teams though.

BTN Double Header - iLLHawk & CornLions

Good meet. Illinois takes second Place. Iowa ended up finishing next to last. -
back when TDs were two points, I used to think reversals should be worth three (It's like getting an escape AND a takedown!), but now I actually think the scoring is in really good shape with 3td 1e and 2r. If you reverse and let the guy go, that's kind of like getting an escape. If you reverse the guy and hold him down, that's slightly better than an escape (and you can accrue riding time, could be a three point swing!). I wonder if making reversals higher in value would decrease their frequency. Like if you would get three for a reversal, the top man would be more likely just to disengage with a possible scramble rather than try to maintain control.

Ha! Thanks. I am still hoping for more entries, but as a former wrestler, I know that getting your hand raised in a forfeit still counts as a win. -

After giving up a season-high eight points to his opponent at Sunday's dual meet, Lucas Byrd has decided to retire from collegiate competition in order to pursue a career as a mat-side reporter for the newly formed inflatable sumo ball league. I'm hoping that he changes his mind before it is time for the conference championships. -

Stalling -- Backing out vs Pushing out -- Downey v Taylor
PencilNeck replied to BAC's topic in College Wrestling
Wrestling with your back right up close to the edge of out of bounds is a bad practice. Sure, sometimes that’s where the action takes you. But if you’re constantly playing on the edge you deserve to get hit for stalling. -
Would removing winning % as seeding criteria reduce ducking?
PencilNeck replied to 1032004's topic in College Wrestling
I think wrestlers mostly duck these days because video of meets is so easy and available in the current era. Top athletes don’t want opponents to have the luxury of studying recent tape in preparation for postseason matchups. of course as the stud sitting on the sidelines that means you won’t have as much tape of yourself to study in your own prep, so it’s a little short sighted, but there are trade offs to everything. -
I don’t know if it matters for the interpretation, but the headgear was discarded prior to the “end of match procedure” not after. Is taking off your headgear and flicking it aside after that final takedown in the same category as doing it on the way back to the bench or is it more like doing so between the first and second period? That there is a rule (based on a judgment call!) on the books that allows for team points to be deducted for chucking a headgear is something that a detail oriented coach would warn their athletes about. i can’t actually tell if ILB, my favorite poster, is joking here or not. It does seems to me that the the ref is afforded leeway to make a judgement call. Again, very poor judgement in this case unless there some context about the red team being warned about headgear tossing/throwing already. my perspective here is influenced by being a former track athlete and listening to coaches discuss in detail all the weird rules over how uniforms have to match for a relay team. I know all sports have quirky officials, but I do think track has a reputation for having some of the worst power trips by referees. I know that the coaches I mentioned above weren’t just basing their lectures on the rulebook, there was also real live examples of this that had to deal with over the years. Throwing a relay baton in celebration after a track race doesn’t get a team point deducted. It gets you DQed from the race. Just like in wrestling, these unnecessary rules tend to be more likely to be enforced the more important the competition is. Knowing all the rules is important. Needlessly flinging your equipment to the ground after a match is about as impressive to me as a kid who doesn’t know how to cover the bottom man in referee’s position. But that is all forgotten when noticing how smug the ref looked making that call. Who wants to win on a technicality anyway?
-
Terrible, terrible call. WTF? that said, why do you need take off your headgear and toss it away before even getting your hand raised? Is this part of the resistance of (some) good wrestlers to headgear in general? I don’t know. When I wrestled, I’d always remove my stuff like headgear and singlet straps AFTER leaving the mat. After being involved in scholastic sports for more than a couple of weeks, you learn not to give officials any chance to screw you over. Of course the best thing about the video is the losing (non-penalized) athlete in that bout was seen not wearing headgear and either before the final handshake. I couldn’t tell if he had it in his hands or not. I mean. Why is everyone deciding to undress before the hand-raising? anyway, I almost feel bad for the social media *I poop my pants, don't laugh at me*storm that this ref will go through right now, but not really. What a poor call!

My prediction: This match will be "in tents".

Figueroa lost to Maximo Renteria this year
PencilNeck replied to 1032004's topic in College Wrestling
Maximo is a very good wrestler. Last year I remember watching him lose 2-3 to Ramos and then pin (not called by the ref though) DeAugustino in consecutive weeks. as a fan, was sorry to see him leave the orange and blue, but hope he has big success at Oregon State. -
good call! maybe Baysingar could slot in at 149 at some point down the line.
-
Possible Illini lineup: 25 - Caelan Riley 33 - Byrd 41 - Pucino 49 - Webster (will he be too big for 149?) or Harrier 57 - Roberts or Scoles (or Webster?) 65 - D. Braunagel or Moore (RS?) 74 - Ruth! 84 - Connell 97 - Z. Braunagel Hwt - Luffman I'm not as close watching a fan as most here, so i don't know if any incoming freshman might challenge for starting sports though. I'm seeing 5 likely AAs including at 33, 49 (or 57), 74, 97, and Hwt

James E. Sullivan Award Semi-Finalists: Taylor, Gray and Elor

I voted for Ryan Crouser because he has the best hair and could kick all three of those wrestlers' butts (probably at the same time) if he needed to. -
Do we think the new Big10 schools add wrestling?
PencilNeck replied to FanOfPurdueWrestling's topic in College Wrestling
If these schools were smart, they'd add men's AND women's wrestling. doing both at the same time fixes any title IX compliance issues (guessing...I have little idea what actually goes into that). It also makes it way easier to justify expenditures on things like upgrading training facilities as dollars spent will benefit two times the athletes. Also, starting a women's program from scratch would certainly be easier at that level than a men's program in the talent-packed B1G.
