  1. Agree. DI wrestling grinds up most guy before their eligibility is out, but I wouldn't use this fact to draw conclusions about what will happen to freaks like Basset.
  2. What's his injury history?
  3. Could you go through the particulars? I heard about a dui (or 2) and know that he is the tip of the Arkansas wrestling spear; but, care to connect the dots?
  4. Driving west into "the great concavity" of Indianapolis on I-74 always makes me feel like "a herd of feral hamsters . . . thundering across the yellow plains ... raising dust that forms a uremic-hued cloud with somatic shapes interpretable as far away as" Pittsburgh.
  5. OSU: I want to see what happens with Swiderski and Lockett and/or how Taylor handles logjams.
  6. Re Raney vs Raney vid: My step-dad left my mom shortly after our coach staged an exhibition between my step-brother and me. We were in 7th grade, and Coach made us wrestle before a Wednesday night hs dual. Packed house. Idk somebody was gonna be pissed in the morning.
  7. I read this earlier and thought "this guy is allergic to entertainment." Then I was watching the Tyson documentary on Netflix and saw the Spinx walkout and remember loving the middle-finger-to-showbusiness of it all: No robe, no "song," no hype-man. Just the most menacing man on the planet. ... so I wonder how long it's gonna take before the Cowboy media blitz turns glitz and revolting. How long before I hate this sh*t? Edit: I mean cowboy hats? C'mon.
  8. I'm ready for our yearly debate about the meaning of this word.
  9. I watched a few times but couldnt see him. Idk. I guess he's not a part of this season's narrative yet.
  10. Ugghh. I think it's more likely that PSU wins 9 matches than it is for OSU to win the dual.
  11. Re MP: I agree (even though it takes the starch out of my "most memorable ... by least likely wrestler" match pick). Did any of you wrestle him? What did he feel like? Re CP: The flo doc on his sr run revealed a man haunted by expectations and fears of inadequacy. That he "got two" in spite of freezing-up every match amazes me.
  12. Diffenbach over Perry at CHA. In my memory(?), the win sealed the dual.
  13. We're leaving a"hes-in-the-basement-drilling-right-now" joke on the table.
  14. Probably, but this might be more damning for ISU. If looking-the-other-way is the NCAA's standard operating procedure re NIL, then what would the Cyclones have to do to make make someone notice?
  15. When he coached hs, I stumbled into a conversation about the mechanics of Christiansburg's recruiting machine. A couple minutes into his detailed if aprocryphal account of Dresser's ingenious manipulations of VHSL rules, I realize my new friend is a real fan: "He can sell snow to an Eskimo." The results spoke for themselves. A decade of plundering surrounding counties, building a NJ=> VA pipeline, and nabbing home-town heroes from all over the East Coast; and, only one kid was ruled ineligible. So, is this a done deal? If so, Im a little disappointed. I had great faith in Dresser's ability to get of anything.
  16. I cant tell if youre kidding.
  17. I was thinking about how hard it would be to assemble a Dutch team and stumbled onto the etymology of Dekraker. Like Smith it stems from an occupation, more special the job of cracking / breaking bodies, ie an executioner. Dekraker wins the best-wrestling-name contest.
  18. I had been holing AI doom scenarios for the ~5 months when the Hugging the Face stuff came out. So, I just stopped looking for it and the sun came up. Same thing happened after the last election. Same thing happens every year from now till March and the fate of the world seems to depend on whether, e.g. Kasak or Duke goes 157. Lexapro is a hell of a drug. Edit: . . . But greco might do the trick in a pinch.
  19. Didn't somebody call him "the poor man's Dake"?
  20. Might be true, idk. In 96, my dad got us tickets for one of the opening rounds in Atlanta. I was super excited bc I would get to see the crazy looking guy from the poster in person. My dad was a huge OSU fan and went to all the home duals, but didnt know much about the wrestling world at large. And, even he got excited when I started telling him how scary this guy was. When Karelin walked out, he looked the part even if he was a little less roidy than I had hoped. Then, the match began. Or, at least, I thought so bc the ref blew the whistle. Tbh not much happened. Karelin leaned on the guy. The guy leaned on him. At some point, the other dude's in par terre ... and I thought, "This is it! Karelin is gonna snatch him up and crush his spine!" Nope. After a couple of failed reverse lifts, the ref stands them back up, and they're leaning on each other again. Same thing in the next match, except there might have been a three-pointer Kinda disappointing. I guess I didnt understand what I was watching.
  21. Understood, and I agree that what Vega was doing was not "initiating offense" in any normal sense. Instead, he "gets to his positions" ... sometimes via rope-a dope, sometimes via slipping shots, sometimes via straight giving up his legs. Here's something to consider: the traditional Iowa-style mantra is "Impose your will." Your strategies and tactics dont change from match to match. Instead, you make the other guy change their style. I think this is a hallmark of the active/aggressive wrestler. The finals match is a good example. As Simpleman suggested, Mendez changed how he usually wrestles. He usually attacks the legs ("extremely well" ... and converts these attacks "9 out of 10 times). In this match, he did not. His first takedown attempt came via a vicious snap go behind. But, it looked like he felt something in that exchange that he didnt like bc he didn't do it again. Point is: Vega changed Mendez's pre-match plan and stymied his in-match adjustments. So, did Vega impose his will on Mendez? That's what I'm arguing. And judging by the fact that all Vega's matches look pretty similar, I think he imposes his will on everybody. We disagree on this point, and thats ok. I get and respect your pov.
  22. If you say so
