  1. I would guess he is thinking it is the best place to help him become a national champion and then be able to give the glory to God on national TV. It’s more about having a platform to share your faith. If he went to a private Christian school, who would he have to share his faith with?
  2. My biggest takeaway from all these stats is how on earth did Jason Nolf never win the Hodge Trophy?!
  3. Well, at least the title of the thread still applies to what it has become…
  4. Is nhs67 Pat Mineo’s username?
  5. It’s not ideal for people that have to fly in, but Harrisburg should have some affordable flights and it’s not too bad of a drive from there. What makes it a great location is that is centrally located in PA. The majority of the fans will be driving there, and the state’s hotbeds for wrestling are Pittsburgh area and Lehigh valley. Both are opposite ends of the state, so if you have it in say, Philly, it would be an easy drive for the Lehigh Valley guys but Pittsburgh would be too long for most to make the trip. State College will draw people from all over the state and surrounding states.
  6. What offer did he allegedly get?
  7. I don’t have time to look up all the data… maybe @Wrestleknownothing has a chart for us ? But a quick search shows we are headed in the right direction https://uww.org/article/wrestling-enjoys-record-viewership-world-champs-108-athletes-qualify-spots-olympic-games https://uww.org/article/wrestling-scores-big-world-cships-706-percent-jump-engagements
  8. Good point. I’m not sure… probably a 50/50 at best, which is sad
  9. Seriously… how can anyone compete with Penn State right now?! I don’t blame the top kids for wanting to go there, but it’s no fun for everybody else. Sucks knowing in April who is going to win the NCAA championships in March. What kind of odds would you need to take the field over Penn State right now?
  10. Point 1 is clearly not true. I don’t even really follow others sports to know if it has happened elsewhere, but freestyle wrestling has made huge gains in popularity and viewership as a direct result of rules changes. Compare the world championship viewer ratings now to the “ball grab” era. Rules were horrible back then and the changes they made brought more fans to the sport
  11. In what situation, would that actually happen? If you are losing, you would try to stall on bottom?? If you are winning, and the top guy can’t turn you, he would just cut you… the 3 point takedown makes it much easier for him to make a comeback from his feet.
  12. Yeah the only issue I see with a three point td and 2 pt reversal is that and escape and a td is now worth 4 pts and a reversal is only 2. There are some situations where those look almost identical and it’s a tough call to make if it should be a reversal or not… now that’s a two point difference which is huge
  13. I don’t think it changes anything in that regard. If you are up by 3, you are only up by one takedown… doesn’t really change if a td is 2 or 3 pts. They are making it harder to ride without turning with other new rules, so it would be harder for a wrestler to ride out for a win
  14. No it’s not. The NCAA tournament ratings were down big time this year, and there is an aging group of hardcore fans that are the main thing keeping it alive. Stalling and riding on top have increasingly become worse over the years. I’m a diehard wrestling fan and I’m bored watching mat wrestling. Leaving things the way they are will slowly kill our sport. We need to continue to make positive changes
  15. Interesting… we called it the Oklahoma. Apparently, it’s an equal opportunity ride
  16. I agree. I was a bit confused because the wording made it seem like it would be grasping with the hand, but CP mentioned you can’t sit on the ankle… I thought that would mean you can’t hook with your leg.
  17. Wow! Great changes overall! This will be great for the sport. My only question is are they doing a 5 count for simply hooking the ankle/leg with your leg on top? I think that would be a little unfair to call that stalling but not if have a leg in… leg in is much move controlling and hard to get out of.
  18. At first I read this and was like oh he’s listing all the national champs (slight chuckle in my head). Then, I was like, wait… why is Haines on there?! Took me second and then I literally LOLed! Well done.
  19. Not sure if I’d believe that, but even if it were true, Gilman has been training freestyle full time and has really improved and is proven at the senior level. Lee has wrestled freestyle like one time in the last six years. I’m still very hopeful for Lee because it was his best style and he is an absolute beast, but it’s a tall ask for him to beat one of the top guys in the world with such little training and questionable health.
  20. Yeah I could definitely see Lee winning the open, but beating Gilman is a different story. I don’t see it happening but I’ve been wrong before and it will be fun to see.
  21. Agree and I’ll add that freestyle doesn’t require quite as much cardio with shorter matches and no overtime so that’s to his advantage as well.
  22. I’m excited to finally see him compete in freestyle again. I think he will do well and maybe even win it. He’s in a tough spot with all of his critics though. If he doesn’t do well he will get criticized for that, and if he does do well he will be criticized because he’s “not injured enough” to have taken the MFF
  23. Wow! I did not see that coming. Awesome news!
  24. Idk about that for sure. The 2023 US open has pretty big implications for his main goal of an Olympic gold. It seemed like he is planning to compete but not sure if he is ready yet. If he’s even somewhat healthy, I think he will give it a go
  25. Haha true… but I meant more along the lines as the prestigious traditional program. Although, if there were ever a time to try to surpass OSU in that regard it may be now. Especially if OSU decides to hang on to John Smith until he decides to retires. I have a ton of respect for Smith and he is an all time great coach… just think its hard for someone his age to stay connected. So maybe OU should go all in and make big hire?
