A little Trivia In 2013 Northwestern scored 32.5 team points without scoring a single bonus point. That is the highest team score with zero bonus points in my sample. From 2017 - 2022 no team with zero bonus points scored double digit team points. 2017 PSU edges 2018 Iowa 32.5 to 30.5 for most bonus points in the period. PSU had 5 MD, 9 1.5 TF, and 7 Pinfalls. Iowa had 6 MD, 3 1.5 TF, and 10 Pinfalls.

I finally got around to estimating bonus points. Emphasis on estimating. I found the final team scores from 2013 - 2022 on the Penn State Wrestling Club website. I joined those with my team by team estimates of advancement points and actual placement points to come up with a team by team, year by year estimate of how many bonus points were scored. Because my advancement points are only estimated I wound up with a handful of negative bonus point situations. I used a very sophisticated method of changing my estimated advancement so that bonus was no longer negative (aka The Torture the Numbers Until They Speak Principal). Most of these "corrections/re-estimations" were 0.5 points with the occasional full point or point and a half. Because any individual entry might be off a tad I will stick with summary level data.

I do not think the answer is three, but I am not sure if it is one or two. The new by-law reads: 12.8.3.1.7 Exception -- Men's Wrestling. In men's wrestling, a student-athlete representing a Division I institution may compete in up to five dates of competition during the student-athlete's initial year of collegiate enrollment without using a season of competition. Competition in a conference championship tournament, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, or any other season-ending championship event shall not be exempted from counting as a season of competition. So a freshman is allow five "dates of competition" without using a year of eligibility. The definition of a date of competition is: 17.02.5 Date of Competition. A date of competition is a single date on which any game(s), match(es), meet(s), exhibition(s), scrimmage(s) or joint practice session(s) with another institution's team takes place, regardless of its formality, between an intercollegiate athletics team or individual representing a member institution and any other team or individual not representing the intercollegiate athletics program of the same member institution. (Revised: 1/10/91) And 17.02.7 Date of Competition, Countable, Individual Student-Athlete. A countable date of competition for an individual student-athlete is any date on which a student-athlete competes while representing the institution (see Bylaw 17.02.8) individually or as a member of the varsity, subvarsity or freshman team, unless a specific exemption for a particular date of competition is set forth in this bylaw. So date of competition can have more than one match and still count as one toward the 12.8.3.1.7 Exception. By that measure I think the Collegiate Duals should count as two dates of competition, not three. Two duals one day (first "date of competition") and one dual the next day (second "date of competition"). Does anyone know if that interpretation is correct?

You are looking at it all wrong. Over the course of two months Iowa State has improved their total by 26 points while Penn State has added a measly 6.57, for a 19.43 net point gain for ISU. Right now ISU trails PSU by 38.3 points. So, ISU only needs four more months to pass PSU. If ISU can conspire to delay the 2023 NCAA tournament to April 27 then they will 100% be champions. It's just math.

Top 10 and Bottom 10 Changes in Expected Points since the pre-season ranks came out. Iowa State is hard charging for a spot on the podium. Meanwhile, injuries and transfers take their toll on ASU and Wyoming, respectively.

Now that Intermat, Flo, and Wrestlestat have each updated their rankings to include results at the Collegiate Duals I have updated the team projections. Reminder: I treat rankings like they are seed projections Then based on average results by seed for the past 12 tournaments (2010 - 2022) I calculate an expected points total Expected points only takes into account the advancement and placement points - no bonus points Expected points differs from maximum points scoreable because not every wrestler finishes at their seed. For example, #1 seeds only win 98.33% of the time. All American probability takes into account the same phenomena. For example, #8 seeds only finish in the top eight 50% of the time. So a #8 seed counts as half an AA. And seeds below #8 also count as a fraction of an AA. Said another way, with a 5.5 AA probability for PSU per Intermat there is a 50% chance they end with 5 AA's and a 50% chance they end with 6 AA's.

You got em all. Nine titles amongst them from 2006 to 2022.

And the tournaments in the 10 weight era with the fewest teams taking the spoils were 1972 and 1997, when only 5 teams won the 10 titles. OK, I will stop now.

One more aside for you. In the 10 weight era it has happened only 6 times out of 66 tournaments (9.1%), but 4 of them happened in a 10 year period (40%): 1963, 1988, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2009. It also happened in 1932 when there were only 8 weights.

I agree that Diakomihalis probably would not come back if not for a shot at four. And the same is probably true for Lee. This is year six of what they thought was a four year journey. It has to be hard to motivate at this point, but I also think they will be very motivated by the time the tourney rolls around.
