Is Cael a Mormon? I'm an atheist but I'd consider conversion if he could turn me into an NCAA champ calibre wrestler 😄

I believe he's still a member.  They've also got Rulon Gardner, Bryce Harper, Steve Young, Dennis Eckersley.  Deceased members include Jack Depmsey and Roy Halladay.   I'll call my buddy Moroni.  He claims to have all the higher ups on speed dial.  He can hook you up.

We all know about the Finesilver brothers from Duke. 4 brothers all qualifying for the national tournament for the same school. Did you know that's not the first time 4 brothers have wrestled AND qualified for the national tournament for the same school.

There was actually a set of 6 brothers to do it!!

Who were the brothers and what team?

    The Cuthbertson brothers?

Taylor was simply destroying people - all the time.  He seemed like the unstoppable force.  Had this huge aura about him.  Neither KOT nor Star have that.

Dake was a riddle.  Often won by a little.  But was doing the 4 weight class thing with no redshirt.  Still - didn’t have the hype that DT had.

Then two super close matches leading up to NCAAs where it seemed so many had predicted DT wins but Dake had found a way each time.  Then Taylor destroys to the finals — seemed to be on A game, Dake not so much.  All came together for a some real excitement.

Can't forget the pin the previous summer at the OTT.

on FRL today the guys were debating if KOT going for 4 next year and bumping up against Carter going for 5 would be as big as the DT Dake rivalry. Was wondering what you guys thought.

In terms of hype and general perception?  No.  The hype of the Taylor-Dake match was nothing I've ever seen.    But on paper and to the hardcores like us then absolutely.

I have followed and enjoyed this forum both here and at its previous site for many years.

Hopefully this thread permanently gets you off the sidelines and we get your input on a regular basis.

Who would it be for New Jersey? Jordan Burroughs right?

Depends how we want to define "best ever".  College, absolutely not (Mike Caruso 3 timer) (Mocco 2x champ 4x finalist).  International you can definitely argue he has a slight edge over Bruce with more titles even though Bruce has more medals (only counting Olympics/Worlds)

    Isn't Dake from NY?

New Yorkers always forget they have the Banach brothers.

Hidlay does not get nearly the respect he deserves, and he absolutely is a legit threat to Brooks.  Yes, if he pulls it off the Hodge still goes to Starocci, but the Hidlay-Brooks matchup is still a great storyline.

For three years in a row, Hidlays has lost to Brooks in the NCAAs finals/semis.  All close:  3-2, 6-4 SV, 6-3.  If Brooks didn't exist, then Hidlay would be, at minimum, a 3x finalist and 1x champ, and might even being going for his 4th right now (if he won in the finals in '22-23).

The main difference is that this year, Hidlay seems to have level-jumped and, more importantly, opened up his offense.  He went from a 25% bonus rate when he lost to Brooks as a freshman, to his current 85%.  Before this year, he'd never bonused a top-10 opponent. This year he majored #3 Beard and #5 Cardenas.

Of course, Brooks isn't exactly standing still, and is still the favorite.

But the question I want to know is -- how will Hidlay wrestle him this time?  Brooks has made no secret of the fact that he hates wrestling Hidlay since he won't open up, making for a defensive battle.  Does Hidlay stick with that game plan, or does he open it up more this time -- more like his other matches?

I hope he opens it up.  He's a senior, and if he really wanted his title he could have stayed at 184. But he decided to make another run at Brooks. If you're going to lose to the man 4x, at least go out on your shield. My own guess is we see a different Hidlay this time around, and the match ends up being very entertaining.

I don't think Hidlay will wrestle Brooks any differently if they meet at NCAAs.  These guys that jump up to 197 a lot of times find it easier to get to their offense.  Nickals bonus rate dramatically increased when he moved up to 197 as has Aarons.  I wouldn't say Nickal or Arron jumped many levels their senior year.  197 has always been a weight with a few studs, sometimes none, with a huge drop in talent. Also, I don't think Hidlay went up to 197 to take another crack at Brooks.  It's an Olympic year and he's filling into 86kg.

Yeah; It was really bad when Trent was almost taken down and intentionally reached off the mat to stop the action!

    Oh wait, that wasn't him.

Sometimes your Penn State hate goes too far.  Objectively, Hidlay has stalled his toosh off in each of their matches.  Except last year when he finally engaged and lost by a wider margin than the previous matches.  I enjoy the shots you take at a lot of PSU fans.  Keeps them honest.  But this is just a terrible take
