I agree that folkstyle is here to stay but were it up to me, I would make two freestyle changes that I believe would make the matches more interesting by encouraging more action.  The first would be pushout points as far too many matches take place at the edges rather than in the center where they belong.  The second would be passivity from neutral in the first period.  It is 3 minutes long and far too many matches end 0-0 after the first given the amount of time they have to work.  I know these have come up before but it would also be one movement in the direction of freestyle without doing away with the mat wrestling that gives folk its own identity.

The push out rule I go back and forth on only because I'd bet top wrestlers will start to release the bottom wrestler near the edge of the mat to game the system for a free point.  Maybe they'd have to reset in the center

    Yes, exactly.

Instead of resorting to insults, you could say: “Drinking bleach as a cure for cancer is dangerous and incorrect. Please consult reliable medical sources for accurate information.”

Then, ignore the person spreading harmful advice.  Darwin’s law wins.

That's obviously an intelligent response but sometimes someone deserves to be called an idiot.

Can't believe no one has responded to what Jimmy said...but wasn't Amit Elor's gold the best US Team performance??

It's because many of us are purposely not feeding his troll posts.  I broke the rule by posting but only to help others like yourself to find the wisdom and just put his threads on mute

I'm sure this has been discussed a million times and I just haven't been on the board regularly when it was, but where did folkstyle come from, and why does the US not eliminate it and focus on freestyle and greco from a young age, in HS, and in college? I believe every other country does this. If we did, I can't see how we wouldn't be the best in the world with the number of athletes that participate/US population vs. other countries.

Folk (US) wrestling morphed into what it is today centuries ago.  I believe it was first officially wrestled in college early 1900's in the Ivy league schools.  @cowcards, @Jason Bryant, & @gimpeltf are the guys on this forum that might know the actual histroy

I think we should be as good or better than Iran, but worse than Russia.    I think the performance was a slight underperformance.  I’ve seen people say if you go person by person it’s about what should have been expected which is fair, but I would say the fact that no one won gold was disappointing because they pretty much all had a chance to (except for maybe Zain).

You could make the argument that “the US should be the best!” for pretty much every sport.  I think the answer for why we shouldn’t is earnings potential of the athletes.  Let’s be honest, the top overall athletes are going to play football, basketball or baseball because they can make millions.   Whereas in Russia it seems some of the country’s best athletes are wrestlers.

Most countries also pay incentives to win Gold and a lot of the wrestling countries (including transfer countries w/Russian wrestlers) pay out.  This is what I found based on 2021 figures compared to 2024 US Gold medalist receive only $37.5k.  There is an article on Forbes on this subject but it's behind a paywall. Maybe someone on this forum has access to it

    Iran - $295k

    Azerbizian - $235k

    Georgia - $318k

    Bulgaria $99k

    Hungary $150k

    Greece $100k

  7. In my perfect world we would have a system where we'd keep college wrestling as is but incentivize high school wrestlers that  are freestyle studs (example Meyer Shapiro) to forego College Wrestling and train at a RTC on a college campus so they can still obtain a college degree.  The four to five years of folkstyle competition does hinder our development in freestyle at a very important age.  Look at 97kg.  Snyder lost to two studs. One a 22 year old and the other a 21 year old

Already tall and long and very very quick. My understanding is that there were times in the offseason when he outweighed yianni. Not recently, but back in the college days.  (One of my sons club coaches was a Cornell wrestler)

He’s got a better chance of being an effective 65.

What's the turn around on that jump.  Thats almost 10 pounds.  A solid a year in the weight room plus half a year to adjust?

How do you feel about doing the same in swimming?  No one understands those other strokes and good grief ... what is an IM?

IM means in meters.  so 400IM is 400 strokes in meters or the 50 meter IM freestyle is 50 meters of swimming with atleast 50 strokes in those 50 meters.  Its a European thing

Vito ain’t a 57. Not one who can win big matches on the world/Olympic stage. Hes a big 61.

I know.  But a man can wish.  Or he somehow fills into 65 but that might be a bigger wish

  12. There's a lot to be excited about for the future of Team USA at the Olympic Weights.  Our crop of guys coming up (hs & college) are good.  We've consistently medaled at the U tournaments.

74kg will be the easiest to reset.  Nolf is a solid replacement for the near future if needed and we have Keegan O'Toole coming on to the scene shortly.   Mesenbrink medaled twice at U20's.  Silver then Gold.  And we can't forget Meyer Shapiro.  His results speak for themselves.

65kg  Near future Jesse Mendez and Alirez will elevate this weight class.  Maybe Yianni D reappears but the weight issue might be a real thing.

57kg  If Vito can continue to make the cut or if Spencer Lee decides to continue we are set at this weight.

86kg Brooks needs to stay at this weight.  He's built for it and I'm not a fan of the Brooks to 97 rumors.  Trent could be a solid replacement and Starocci is another alternative but I think he goes the Bo Nickal route

97kg Snyder has a tournament or two left in him.  I wish someone could get into Zahid's ear and convince him to make the commitment to move up.  Might take a year but his frame screams 97kg and he'd be a real threat.

125kg  Parris has room to grow and Kerk will be a nice addition to the weight class after he fully transitions.  Problem with Kerk is getting him motivated and keeping him healthy

And then there are the crop of young guns in high school and underclassmen in college.  Let's be clear.  USA has never had this much depth at freestyle.

Serious question…was Cael (or Cunningham for that matter) in Paris?  I wasn’t paying super close attention to who was in the corner (except for the awkward Dake challenge), but I only saw Cody and Varner.

    Casey cornered Brooks.
