  1. I good friend of mine was in the room there back then and said there might be as many 30 state champions in that room....it was a meat grinder for back then.
  2. When Dr. Harold Nichols coached there was no limit on number of scholarships if I remember correctly.
  3. What a great list of coaches!!!
  4. And he does have a leg attack!!!! A long time ago, when I was a young coach, one of my really goods was a defensive wrestler. We went to maybe an age-group state tournament, and he got beat in the finals by a good kid who was more offensive. After that I spent more and more time in the room on offense....don't get me wrong, we worked hard on defense, but there was more emphasis on offense. That same wrestler a couple of years later became a 2 time state placer/state champion. He was actually an age-group national champion as well.
  5. Lewan needs to "pull the trigger" and close the distance.

  7. not exactly, when we just got done with DiSanto, and at least for awhile with Ferraro, Thomas Gilman.....
  8. I'll start it off......""If I'm on the mat, I'm going hard the whole time....I'm not going to let my opponent get a chance to do anything to me....when I'm off the mat, I'm a gentleman, but when I'm on the mat, I turn into sort of like, and animal" Dan Gable before the 1972 Olympics
  9. You are kidding....he's nothing like those guys...He's a lot more like what any wrestler should be like, and I'm talking about in terms of class.....more like Hawkeyes like Chuck Yagla, the Steiner's, Jim Zaleski, Barry Davis, the Banach's for example
  10. In regards to Spencer Lee....REALLY....He's had serious knee problems and I don't consider him to be a whiner....they ask him questions....he's upbeat with his answers....he's a tremendous talent ......and if I remember right Fix had an issue that Spencer never had. I find Spencer to be a much better example of what a Hawkeye should be than some others that have worn the black and gold. No comment on Real Woods....I am a Casey Swiderski fan though.
  11. Personally, I like some new tunes when if isn't on the air.....that music they use drives me nuts....should be a simple fix to be able to legally use some good tunes. And I'm only putting this on here, because the question was asked. I for one, appreciate Flo, and I hope they continue to grow and work to tweek their broadcasting.
  12. I think they're gone...lol
  13. A couple of my favorites are Dave Schultz clinics mostly on leg wrestling and transitions into hip tips and bars. Also Terry and Troy Steiner teaching every area of wrestling. When I was a young coach (1975) I went to a Granby Camp that I got maybe 4 or 5 crucial techniques from. I've also been to all the FILA Clinics that were at the World Cups (17 years)....back when the clinicians were Yuri Shakmuradov, Ivan Yarigan, Stan Dziedzic, Gable, Zoogalov Abdulbakov maybe too. One year there were 2 high school kids on the mat during the clinic....they grew up to be pretty good....they were from Mobridge, S.D......Jim and Bill Scherr....lol....and now friends of mine.
  14. Thanks for the props WKN.....I'm not sure how many I have....I do know most of their contents have been view ated least once, a some many times. I couldn't watched them all again in the rest of my lifetime. Started "filming" in 1970 first at the 1970 Midlands, then in 1971 The USA vs. USSR also at McGaw Hall ('70 Midland's were actually at maybe Harper Jr. College that year) Most of my crucial stuff that was super 8 I transferred to video while the getting was good. Most of the events I've been to I have filmed or video'd......42 NCAA's, maybe 26 Big Ten's, 17 World Cups, MANY college matches from Iowa Public Television....3 duals on each tape/dvd. I have tapes of World Championships, Tblisi, and more. Some that I treasure most though are of clinics I've been to. I started my collection as a very young coach....they were invaluable in the development of my coaching, teaching (Physical Education), and doing wrestling clinics. I'll end by simply saying ....I wouldn't trade my teaching and coaching career for anything, and my library helped me immensely. I'd take a pic of my shelves of videos, but my office is a mess right now, and I have videos in the living room, in my weight room/wrestling room.....they are not all on the shelves. The bookcase goes to the ceiling, and has maybe 8 shelves, and they are all full. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it......I like Wrestling Arenas library by the way!! Good Stuff!! (Hope I proof read this good enough because when I click "Submit Reply" the 15 minute timer starts)
  15. Since you brought up spiral.....
  16. Not sure which emoji to use there.....lol. There's some truth to that, or massage therapy, and of course there used to be the sauna....personally, I use my hot tub now, in addition to an inversion table, traction rig and even a 2 piece neck brace that I sleep in if my neck is aggravated.....that's from 60+ years in the sport. I watched it, good match....if I remember right Braunagel got a takedown on the buzzer. It was a barn burner.
  17. I viewed the Max Dean/Braxton Amos situation...not sure I liked the part about the knee in the back, and I'm not sure the referee saw that. Amos might have needed a chiropractor/PT after that. Bent leg turk itself was fine (for college and up).
  18. LOL...there's truth to that, but off the mat, nicest guy in the world.
  19. WOW......this time, it timed out in the middle of my edit...HONEST....lol, but it did let me cut so I could paste at least, and thus proving that I was in the middle of my EDIT.....lol so here it is.....And as a sidenote, I do have very old books in my library that I acquired from a media specialist where I used to work.....from the 50's/60's and I know they used the term chickenwing then....but that was then and this is now....this is the modern era!!! Besides, I like to teach to the highest level.
  20. Oh, I can see where it came from ....it doesn't sound like the name of a move used in college or international wrestling, and this is a college forum...just like I kind of chuckle at, and even get in friendly arguments with some pretty "high level" coaches over the term "chicken wing".....I tell them "that is what you get at KFC or Buffalo Wild Wings".....to me they are called armbars. One of those coaches, and a great coach, terms the arm across the back an armbar....I call that a hammerlock. Argument closed....lol.
  21. Michigan 36 Cal State at Bakersfield 0.
  22. You can call it the bow and arrow.....I call it a bent leg turk....part of the turk series...inside leg turk, outside leg turk, folded leg turk and the BENT LEG TURK as discussed by the great one Dave Schultz and demonstrated by one of his greatest protege's, David Lee. Have a couple of great videos in my library with Schultzie teaching leg wrestling ......some of my favorite videos. He turned legs into hip tips, bars and more. The Master and loved and respected by the Russians. Fadz https://fb.watch/hX9_t17Vn_/
  23. Got a phone call from a great friend yesterday, Lou Montano, who has been affiliated with both Cal Poly (who Michigan beat on Friday) and Cal State @ Bakersfield. It had been a long time .......we've had some great times together. Looking forward to watching, with some format, today's dual. One of the discussions I had with him was about one of my favorite California wrestlers of all-time, Joe Gonzales. Eric Guerrero's name came up too, as I first some him high school at the Ironman (from Independence High School). Fadz (yes, I was in America at that time to watch the Ironman)
  24. I have, but I still can't edit after 15 minutes
