Re nervous: that match (... and 125) did (not so much the others), esp when Ech sat him on his butt.

What's more remarkable is that Vega kept intentionally giving Eche his right leg. When Eche took that outside step and reached, Vega picked his foot straight up. He did it a couple of times. So, he either got completely juked over and over, or it was a tactic to get in a preferred position. I think it was the latter. He wanted the hip-to-hip whizzer that he eventually scored from.

Seems crazy dangerous to me. But, then again so does staying on your knees after a failed shot or the other guy's snap, and both Vega and Forrest live there. Idk.

Another note: this was the first time I thought, "Vega needs to hit the weights" He kept stumbling after snaps and shoves.

Vega could use some weight but lets not forget there is like an 8 year age gap between Vega/Ech. I expected Vega to get out muscled pretty easily.

Vega stalled his ass off to keep it close to steal a takedown and the win at the end.     Vega knew that he'd win rideouts if it came down to that so he stalled accordingly.  Ech knew he'd lose rideouts and made an ill fated attempt to score late that Vega countered.

It's awesome you declare me biased because I don't think counter wrestling is stealing.

Vega stalled plenty.  Enough to get hit twice.  He was also the only guy to finish a takedown.  There was no stealing.  Ech attempted but failed takedowns.  He was unwilling to even try top or bottom.  He didn't win a single position in those 7 minutes (top, bottom, or neutral).  He lost in all 3.

The guy who deserved to win was the guy who won. That's not bias.  That's what happened.  You preferring the style of the loser doesn't equal everyone else being biased.

No doubt.

I still wish seeds at the NCAAs were based on the team and weight class.  It would end ducking if Iowa State's 133 was the record and seed.

Exactly this!

Who is us.  I’m not messing with anyone.  I am just saying that people have differing opinions.  I hope all of us here are human with human tendencies.  You apparently fell in to one of those tendencies when you just assume he saw something differently because he must be biased.  I don’t think it correct to state the reason an individual responds or analyzes events a certain way because they are impartial unless you have proof.  Otherwise that is called speculation.  If you have your own opinion, great.  You should not invalidate somebody else’s opinion because of speculation.  Basically what I am saying is he is just as much allowed to his opinion as you are yours.  Although I do find it comical on how different these opinions happen to be.  Which is the only reason I said anything at all.  They were completely opposite.

Before going further, might I ask your age range?

I think we are actually more on the same page than it might seem.

Yes I know Askren can be biased with matches but normally he will say it before he even talks about them.  But when breaking matches down he is pretty good and normally doesn’t pull punches.  That probably a bad analogy, especially his his punch throwing abilities are limited at best.  Anyway like I said he usually is pretty straight with what he sees.  This is why it was so comical to me because when I got home I start looking to see how the dual went and the matches and the opinions for Ben and the on here were polar opposite.  Crazy.  I’m sure Flo or Big12 will post some matches and I’ll be able to watch myself.  Just goes to show your trusted sources aren’t always going to jive.

Preferring the stall style because of the uniform is what makes so many matches almost unwatchable.  I would have thought Taylor would have imported more of Sanderson's philosophy.   The reason for Penn State's success comes down to not caring if they get taken down or even if they win.

Look at Ferrari/Mirasola.   Mirasola choosing down wasn't a smart decision in that match but that match didn't matter.  It was to give Mirasola a feel for being under Ferrari to see where he needs to improve for when that match does matter.

Vega learned what from that match?  Not wrestling for 6:45 of a match can still get a win if you get a bad official?

You are grasping hard here.

I agree with you Vega's win was ugly.  I agree it's an unenjoyable style.  I hope that when he enters his 2nd year of college he can be undefeated and scoring lots of points.

But the idea that Mirasola learned something and Vega didn't is dumb.  Vega went bottom.  Vega willingly scrambled with Echemedia and won the scrambles.  He scored a TD.  He was better in every position.  There is nothing Mirasola did to learn that Vega didn't.  Echemendia is the one who wouldn't engage in half the sport and wouldn't wrestle bottom like Mirasola did.

You're just trying to come up with an interesting way to say you don't like Vega winning ugly.

Ok.  Big 12 put the Merrill vs Elam match on YouTube so I just watched.  I didn’t really think either guy was ever trying to stall but I can see where both guys could have been dinged.  As far as Elam hand on Merrill’s throat he should have moved it but there was no choking whatsoever, it’s pretty easy to tell when a guy is getting choked and he was not.  Elam did take all of the shots in the match except one counter shot from the state line.  Of course, almost 2 periods were spent on the ground.  Speaking of on the ground I was surprised at Merrill’s ability to keep him down but at the same time he never broke Elam down to his belly or really tried too by what I saw.  Elam did break Merrill down a couple of times but not until he had erased the riding time.  Two guys battling.  Merrill better come up with a way to attack Elam or next match might not be as close.  For a freshman impressive.  Just an outsiders opinion.

You totally missed the point because you are so hung up being a fan.

Penn State is famous for making "adjustments" against opposing wrestlers.   That's because they put their own wrestlers in uncomfortable positions all the time.   I'd also argue that Iowa St should have put Ech down so if they went to rideouts in March he would have a feel for it.   Braeden Davis is another example.  he could have easily stalled his way to a win against Hardy after the first two takedowns but he kept shooting, even shooting himself into a cradle and loss.

Vega was like most of the rest of the OK St team. Do nothing and try to win a one takedown match in the third.  That might win a dual but it won't help in March.  Iowa uses the same philosophy and it's stung them at the NCAAs over and over.  Marinelli was a helluva duel wrestler.

It's hilarious you post like this while accusing someone else of being biased.  Absolutely classic lack of self awareness.
