Amen. Exactly how I feel. Unfortunately Smith doesn’t seem to do anything about it though as we saw with Mauller and Jacques. My guess is Mendoza redshirts and Teague fits right in at 157. He’s definitely an upgrade over Conway…I wouldn’t be upset if I didn’t see him in a Mizzou singlet again.

Now we just need a 133 transfer and our frustrations would be reduced significantly…

You and I know Smith is loyal to his guys. Obviously Moore hasn’t been great, probably just barely serviceable. However I don’t see Smith replacing him. Would love to see Gage Walker or even Boogie Harris at 33 next year and Moore out to pasture.

Man, you and I are always on the same page. I wonder if Mendoza keeps growing. I say that because…what happens next year after Mauger and Walkers redshirts are gone? Mauger at 125, Gage at 133, Kade at 141, Seltzer at 149? Or to your point (and what I hope), Gage at 33, Seltzer at 41 and Seth at 49, and Kade is gone.

I’ll take Smith to a nice steak dinner and buy him a nice bottle of scotch if he makes it happen! Ha!

We can only hope your second suggestion comes to fruition. Those four at the lower weights is our best lineup. Kade is a boom or bust wrestler, but a lot more bust than boom. Maybe Jayce Roller throws his hat in the 141 ring. If we don’t have a 133 in the room currently that can’t beat Kade Moore, we severely lacked in recruiting that weight. Whos coming in at that range next year? I’ll have to go look back on who signed. Maybe we get a transfer but again Smith is loyal. It’s a great thing that can also bite you at times. Me, Edmond either goes to 141 or sits this year. Mendoza is the future, let him wrestle.

I don't know all the details and have no clue what Coach Smith and staff are going to do, nor should I, but Mendoza has been wrestling up and was supposed to be the 41.  Heck, I'd personally redshirt him but I'd 100% be for Teague being in the lineup...he fights and battles.   Edmond isn't my favorite and I think he loses a lot of matches he should be winning and it is frustrating and boring from a fans point of view.   It is usually 1 good opening takedown and then nothing until it is too late...been watching it for over 3 years and sick of it.

Coach Doss, you've been reading my posts.  I feel the same about Edmonds and his style of wrestling.  It drives me crazy.

I'm not opposed to Mendoza taking a shirt and being future thinking with this young team, but sounds like Smith is going to have to figure it out real quick.  Teague is a tough wrestler that I lamented about when he went to OSU.  I really didn't see this coming.

Agree completely.  And let Edmond and Seltzer fight it out at 41.  Edmond has so much ability, quickness and strength, but he seems to always wrestle to the level of his opponent.  Then has a lapse in effort that costs him matches against guys he should be teching.

THIS.  Edmond hasn't made any improvement/adjustments since he arrived on campus.  This is where I fall on the outside with my opinion of Smith as a coach, and his ability to develop wrestlers to their best, considering their potential.  Maybe there is a reason there is talented wrestlers that leave the state, and this program, as they feel they can't get to the next level in this program.  Basicly, what you have when these athletes arrive on campus, is what you are going to have, as a result of their HS coaches and pre college experience.  Just my opinion, but I can point to careers of several wrestlers that fell short of their potential and seemed to level out at end of their Tiger careers.  Yes, injuries,HEW happen, but part of that is coaching.  Sorry about getting off topic, but Edmonds is case in point.

We HAD Antonio Mills in the pipeline for 125/133, but he flipped to tOSU. Smith definitely has some work to do, although Gage should fill in nicely. My hope for next year...

125: Mauger

133: Walker

141: Seltzer

149: Mendoza

157: Rath

165: Bamby

174: Steed

184: Aedon

197: ...

Heavy: Stillwell

Very, very young team and likely no podium for anybody but Seth, Cam, and Aedon.

As an OKST fan, I am happy for Teague. He's been a team guy through and through and has sacrificed a lot for the Cowboys over the years (bumping up to 157 two years ago when the team had a huge hole there, then last season thinking he's going to RS after tearing his knee week 1 of the season and coming out of RS the last two weeks of season to fill a hole again, and making the R16 both years). He deserves to finish his career the right way. Good ride cowboy.

I've always thought that wrestling teams (whether HS or college) are built on assistant coaches. When we had Sammie Henson, Alex Clemson, Joe Johnston, it seemed like we had a lot more in-state (or Illinois) talent and were more aggressive. The 2015 team comes to mind with Waters (Park Hill), Synon (Ill), Mayes (Ill), Drake (FZW), Eblen (Park Hill), J'Den (Hickman), and Mellon (Lawson). Others that come to mind in that era were Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs), Brent Haynes (Oak Park), Le'Roy Barnes (Belton), McCormicks (Kansas).

It's weird though because some live up to the potential (Waters, Haynes, J'Den, Keegan, Aedon), others exceed (Mayes, LaVallee), but a lot more seem to regress (Weist bro's, Toal bro's, Boyd, Edmond, Surtin, Mauller, Jacques...the list goes on). I don't know if it's just adjustment to college or if it's the room.

I'll be curious to see how things go the next few years with Keegan onboard now. The primary thing that concerns me is the lack of offense and the "come at me and I'll scramble for points". The successful ones are the attackers (see OK State...cut him, score again, cut him, score again). I don't know why that's not drilled and pushed for everywhere.

I totally agree with your point about the importance of the asst coach staff.  But referencing your comment about the aggressive, attacking, and scoring mentality of Okie State, that is the influence of David Taylor and the way he wrestles.  Wrestling teams are the reflection of their coaches competitive personality.

I think Brian Smith is a very organized, knowledgeable, and great PR guy for Tiger Style Wrestling.  He'd make a great scoutmaster.  Thing is, the Tigers of Smith's early career were a bit more aggressive group of athletes.  Think how many MMA fighters came out of that group.  Somewhere along the line, the switch got changed and so did the style of wrestling.

I'm trying to be optimistic with the addition of KOT in the room, and no doubt, the technique syllabus he brings in the room.  I just would like to see that "aggressive" switch get turned back on and get some fire back in the room.  If wrestlers, like Edmonds, don't make the adjustments to improve, and contribute to the team, sit his ass and give someone else an opportunity.

Smith has job security and has zero pressure to win.  That's not true in the blue blood wrestling circles.  I have a lot of admiration for what coach Smith had done at Missouri, but he had also teased a wrestling fan base that went through the lean years and finally got spoiled with a regular top 10 program.  I'm realistic in my view that Mizzou is probably not going to crack that top 3, but top 5 is a possibility in the next 3 years.

When Dresser started at Iowa State, the Tigers were winning that dual.  I know it's legacy program and the fanaticism of the state with wrestling.  But, he's surrounded himself with a strong staff and they have their program rolling. This was suppose to be a building year for Mizzou with some high quality incoming recruits. We will keep that theme in our expectations this year.  Next year is a whole different story.

BINGO....yet that doesn't seem to happen for whatever reason.

I personally think it is time for a change.   Look at what it did for OSU!

I agree. Who do you think the successor is? Keegan? Does Clemsen come back? I'm sure Max Askren is a no with AWA. Couldn't be anybody big like a PSU alum, Burroughs, or Dake with the lack of NIL funds.

My understanding is it’s Maple’s job in waiting.  At least that what was being said when Johnston left and O’Toole came in.

Interesting. I don't see Keegan wanting to be an assistant for the next 20 years.

Not a chance KOT sticks around until Smith retires. And if Smith retired end of this season it still wouldn't be KOT.

He may have world level ambitions, and I hope he can accomplish those goals, strengthen a regional training center, and possibly attract some elite wrestlers to the area, much like some of the top programs.  I just hope he still has that competitive drive.  There are a lot of Hammers out there that also have the same goals.  Keegan is married now, had a great college career, and has been wrestling for a long time.  There is a day we ask the question why?

I was always a Clemsen fan and I think he was a big part of the Tiger success.  At one time, I really thought maybe he would one day return to Mizzou.  He's worked his ass off trying to get Maryland respected.  I can't see the move now.

As far as Maples taking over the program, there is a big difference when your sitting in the assistant chair.  He may be sitting back, watching and learning, and who knows, maybe his style will be great.  Generally when we thing we need a coaching change, that means changing the culture.  That generally doesn't happen when an assistant takes the job.  I have no clue how long Smith is hanging around.  Probably as long as he wants, so probably more same o, same o.

We Had Antonio Mills, but the problem was we never had Uriah. The brothers were always a package deal. Antonio, Teequavious and Uriah. While the two older ones committed just as they did with NC State prior, the key was Uriah. He was Ohio State from the start but none of the brothers had gotten an offer until after Words. Uriah has been sporting OSU gear in warm ups for months prior to the de commitment. Bachman was heavily interested in Mizzou due to Maple. He said so in the flo film about his recruitment. Iowa and Mizzou were his final 2, we know where he’s headed. Younger guys love Maple and how he does things. I would love for him to take over after Smith. Obviously they may cost us KOT at some point.

Seems like we are all Mizzou fans so I can assume we all go to at least one dual.  When you’re there ask Keegan what his aspirations are for himself.  I don’t think he will hide his goals.  As far as being married I don’t know what role that plays into his wrestling.  A lot of wrestlers are married at the senior level.

It'll be the same with the Buckeyes. Jaggers will be the next after Tom and the culture will continue with Jaggers.

I just read the article about the Ohio State program on Flowrestling that was citing Jaggers and Ryan in regard to the success of their wrestlers and program.  Good read.  Ryan is a class coach, and when he decides to retire, Jaggers will do a great job.  Sure doesn't hurt being located in the bed of some of the toughest HS and Prep programs in the nation.

Buckeye fans are the worst though. If OSU aren't National champs every year, "it's time to get rid of Ryan." This has been going on since 2015. They start calling for a change in culture which will never happen because Jaggers is next in line.  Much like the dilemma with Smith...

Can't be worse than the Iowa fans! Ha! But to your point about 2015, it seems like winning a team natty is when the standard is set and fans expect the best every year.

I thought I read somewhere that Logan might be the next in line? I know Jaggers has tenure and likely wouldn't stick around if he didn't have some sort of handshake agreement, but would kind of think the same about Logan. He seems to have those aspirations as well.

I think the married thing has something to do with his wife being from CoMo and having roots there. I also thought I read that KOT started a company there and doesn't want to leave it.

For some reason, I tend to think that he might be done with international. He lost twice at WTT and at 74 you still have the likes of Burroughs, Dake, Nolf, Haines, Messybrink, Lockett, and at 86 you have Chance, Carter, Brooks when he comes back, Hidlay, Ringer. He may still want to stick around, but those are loaded fields even if some of the ageless wonders hang it up.

My gut tells me he wants to stay in CoMo and continue to be around wrestling and this is likely the best paycheck you can get in that scenario. Maybe he eventually opens AWA South.
