Ben Keuter is a U20 world champ, freestyle junior world champ, 4x undefeated Iowa state champ who went 111-0 with 74 pins.  He was the #1 overall recruit coming out of high school and deservedly so.  He was also a top tier football recruit for Iowa playing linebacker.

Full accolades:

  • Freestyle Junior World Champion at 97 kg
  • Freestyle Under-20 Pan American Champion at 97 kg
  • Named USA TODAY Boys Wrestler of the Year for 2022-23
  • Named USA TODAY All-Iowa Male Athlete of the Year for 2021-22
  • 2023 Iowa Class 3A Dan Gable Mr. Wrestler of the Year
  • 2023 Bob Steenlage Iowa High School Wrestler of the Year
  • Fifth Iowa high-schooler to win a Junior world wrestling title and the fourth from Iowa City High
  • Four-time undefeated state champion; seventh in the history of Iowa high school wrestling
  • 111-0 high school record
  • 74 career pins and 105 career bonus-point wins
  • Competed in four sports at City High; Butkus Award finalist for the nation’s top high school linebacker

He finished 8th last year at NCAAs.

This year he seems to be off to a sluggish start.  What are expectations for Keuter this year and how is his wrestling development going?

He is coming off a hip surgery.  I honestly didn't think we would see him back this early so he seems ahead of schedule to me, not sure how any serious person would call his start sluggish just because he lost to the #1 guy, 7 months after hip surgery.

He’s been injured/recovering from surgery, so I’m not grading him at this point in the season yet.

BUT overall, career to date, it does feel like he needs to make a decision and pick a lane. Trying to do both D1, in the Big Ten, doesn’t seem to be working out. I don’t claim to follow Iowa’s 2-deep but I don’t recall him getting much PT from Ferentz. Kid loved both in HS and he excelled at both…in HS. This is college. It might be time to make a grown up decision and focus efforts on one sport…

I think Kerk majored him earlier last year. Not too impressive against Keuter recently.

He only played football his true freshman year, so hasn't had a chance to get PT in two years.

I'm not super happy with his development, but he did have a solid post season last year.  And when you look at his age group success, almost everyone who placed above him last year had age group medals and most were bigger bodies.

When you have a fine man and athlete like Ben who is top 5 to 7 in the country you should be humble and happy. He really had wrestling as his number 2 priority until injuries. He's wrestling above his medal weight. To say he's regressed is ridiculous

It was rumored on here, I think, that Ferentz basically told him that he's welcome to stick with football but chances are slim that he gets any meaningful PT. Agree that he should pick a lane and go hard.

I have always thought that if he was really in the plans Ferentz would be saying no wrestling. I have been around major D1 football and you don't get a pass to cross train another sport. If you are practice fodder sure but not if you're on the 2-deep.

He did silver last year  at 125 kg, with a close loss to Massoumi.
